Przeczytałam jednym tchem! Niezwykle klimatyczna opowieść o kulisach powstania słynnego obrazu.
I choć jest to tylko fikcja literacka, postać Griet została tak dobrze wykreowana, chemia łącząca ją i Vermeera jest tak namacalna, że aż nie wiem, co powiedzieć. Choć bohaterowie tej książki nie przyznają się otwarcie do swoich uczuć, widać, że coś jest na rzeczy. Zdradzają ich słowa, spojrzenia, dotyk. Nie wiem, czy można nazwać tę książkę historią miłosną, ale właśnie tak ją poniekąd odbieram.

I enjoyed from beginning till end. It's like classic literature + Downton Abbey-ish. Not long story. It's just 260 pages. But very sensitive and so much emotion in this story.

Chiar și cea mai neînsemnată viață poate deveni una care v-a răsturna istoria unei întregi familii. Chipul care a devenit muza unuia dintre cei mai talentați pictori olandezi, Johannes Vermeer.
Ea nu a fost decât o slujnică, o adolescentă ajunsă a fi cuprinsă de culorile văzute pe masa stăpânului casei.

Ea nu face decât curat, spălat, ordine și îndeplinește poruncile pe care le aude, mai ca spuse automat, fără pic de căldură. Așa era orânduiala secolelor în care femeile, de rangul eroinei noastre, era masa ceea gri, plebea needucată și lipsită de sens.

Griet, perla acestei istorii este diferită. Ea a crescut în brațele unui tată care i-a arătat frumosul, căldura, așa cum a putut el mai bine, mai ales în condițiile unei sărăcii lucide. Ea vede dincolo de culorile evidente ale norilor, ea este „bolnavă” de calitatea mea preferată: curajul!
Eroina noastra crește împreună cu ascensiunea curiozității sale, ale dorinței de cunoaștere, de înțelegere a lumii dincolo de cuvinte.
Ea lasă lumina să pătrundă în cameră, pur și simplu spălând ferestrele. Poate să pară naiv și preistoric, dar înainte nu se prea spălau ferestrele.

Între maestru și noua lui sursa de inspirație se crează o legătură imediată, tacită, una care stârnește gelozia celorlalte femei din casă. De ce ea și nu soția îi este atât de apropiată, ce poate să știe sau vorbească o analfabetă?!
Relația lor de admirație reciprocă, devine un păcat în ochii unui oraș întreg, nemaivorbind despre familia care tolerează afinitatea lor. Chiar dacă inspirația lor a creat multe picturi frumoase și cunoscute de o lume întreagă, a fost de neconceput să fie acceptată de frustrările acumulate sub același acoperiș.

Pentru cei care caută o lectură în care să descopere nu doar emoții, ci și culori, dialoguri despre lumină, figuri sau picturi care te vor face să te simți incomod, Chevalier este generos cu un tumult debordant.

Eu am găsit o istorie care este executată A la Carte! Cum se maschează urât manipularea, întrucât ea este omniprezentă, orice cititor îi va simți izul neplăcut. Cum este tratat adevărul și prejudecățile seculare, fiecare personaj stă de strajă unuia dintre cele două. Am rămas încântată de maturitatea ei și rațiunea clară, pe care și-a asumat-o în cel mai dificil moment din viața ei. Atunci când nimeni nu i-a luat apărarea, când lumea ei s-a năruit, ea a fost eroul ei de care avea nevoie.

Am citit multe păreri, post lectură, care au fost atât de pestrițe, încât am înțeles un adevăr simplu, ori cartea o să vă cucerească, ori va lasă senzația de uscat în gânduri. Totul depinde de un singur lucru: vă place sau nu pictura. Și nu este nimic colțuros în acest lucru. Arta este un domeniu atât de vast, toți au dreptul să prefere ce iubesc, mai puțin ce este la modă sau de ultim răcnet.

Mai zic încă puțin ce mi-a plăcut. Toate personajele, absolut toate, motivația lor, caractere mârșave sau mai puțin, și faptul că autorul a reușit să identifice gradual plusurile și minusurile fiecărui dintre cei prezenți, foarte atent.
„Fata cu cercel de perlă” este nimic altceva decât o „scuză” perfectă pentru a ne vorbi despre frumos și veșnic, despre dragoste, în toate formele pe care aceasta o poate lua.
Probabil, și tind să afirm cu încredere, această carte este una dintre cele mai Cu Sens și Bune citite de mine în ultima vreme.

Beautifully written and read aloud, this is an imagining of the possible life of the girl depicted in Vermeer's lovely painting.

Why I chose to read this book:
1. a GR friend's review encouraged me to add this book to my WTR list;
2. since I recently read a different HF with a Dutch setting, this book went right up to the top of my list; and,
3. September 2022 is "Historical Fiction Month" for me.

Praise (only one!):
Another story based on a piece of artwork (think A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline)! Author Tracy Chevalier's research effectively took me back in time to the Dutch Golden Age of the 1600s. I felt like I was living along the streets and canals of Delft, Holland, seeing the tile makers working at their kilns, and meeting famed artist, Johannes Vermeer as well as other notable Dutchmen. The view of the art world, including famous paintings, visualizing colors in various objects, and learning about the intriguing methods for making paint were all vividly described.

BIG NIGGLE:
Why do authors insist on using the trope of making the wife such a b*tch in order for the reader to rally behind the "innocent" poor girl?
In this story, fictional MC, Griet, because of her attention to detail, is hired to assist Vermeer by cleaning his studio, among other household chores. It may surprise many readers, but I had more empathy for Vermeer's wife, Catharina, than I did for that young upstart! First of all, Griet comes across as pretty "high-falutin'" for an uneducated maid, not only in her speech, but she even makes suggestions to Vermeer on how he should paint a scene! But because of all the weird "secrecy", I could clearly imagine what was going through Catharina's mind when she saw that painting! Besides the rage at seeing her earring in this girl's ear, the idea of "Just what the h*ll was going on between my husband and her?" would be first and foremost in her thoughts. Griet was constantly imagining that Vermeer had the hots for her, so I had to laugh when she thinks that Catharina distrusts her "for no particular reason"! Ha! Call it women's intuition, because ALL the women didn't like her (yet ALL the men are infatuated with her.) And what was up with her being so afraid to show her hair? I expected something heartbreaking, but nope! She just has long, luxurious hair. Whoopee!
Overall, Griet's actions and reactions to various characters and situations were not only unlikable, but so over-the-top unbelievable!
And as for Vermeer's character - he is such an enigma! Although I saw glimpses of his artistic vision, I would have liked his character to be more fleshed out.

Overall Thoughts:
Chevalier chose an interesting premise by creating a story about this so-called "Dutch Mona Lisa". Her graphic descriptions of 17th century Delft, Holland were so lifelike. I only wish her "stock" characters were true to life as well.
I was really hoping to love this story!
Two ⭐⭐ = okay read = I'll be donating this to my library's book sale!

Read this book if you like:
- light historical fiction;
- artistic creations using color and light; and/or,
- young things chasing after your man!

what an amazing historical fiction novel! i loved the creative liberties tracy chevalier took when creating a life and story behind the girl with the pearl earring paining.

i’m so lucky to have seen her in real life yesterday in den haag at the mauritshuis! it was beautiful and i loved thinking of the painting as griet from this book!!!

I loved Griet. It is easy to find her weak compared to today, but you must put yourself in her shoes. Tracy Chevalier does a phenomenal job of trying to make this happen for her reader.

I wanted to fight for Griet and protect her from her 16-year-old naivete through the age of 18 through the majority of the story. She faces problems on all sides, especially in terms of male persuasion. But Griet is not without allies, even if their hands are tied in many ways. I am sure that Griet's story is not so dissimilar from many young girls of this time period, and I can completely understand her to need to take the only control she felt she had when all felt lost in the control of her own person,

It wasn't until after reading this that I realized how much creative liberty Chevalier took from this painting and the created story behind it. Girl with a Pearl Earring is based on a painting of the same name painted by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, sometime around 1665. Chevalier decided to give a story to this girl where one was lacking, and it was well done. It is hard to know who this girl really was, but Chevalier did a fair amount of research into the time and location. Interestingly, she decided to go with Griet rather than a woman of higher standing. I wonder what a story would be if this were about a lady of a house instead.

Overall, this was very well written, and the story wove its way into my mind.

Kada ir kaip suprantame meno vertę? Kiek iš tiesų kainuoja paveikslas? Tiek jo kūrėjui, tiek pozuotojui? Kaip išmokstame žvelgti į meną širdimi – ar su tokiu gebėjimu gimstame, ar jį išsiugdome? Nors Tracy Chevalier romanas apimtimi ir nedidukas, bet aprėpia tiek daug: tai ir „coming of age“ drama, ir 17 amžiaus Olandijos portretas, ir sudėtinga materialinių ir vidinių vertybių sandūra šeimos, visuomenės, draugystės akivaizdoje. Čia ir veikėjai tokie ryškūs, kaip ir pagrindiniu veikėju tampančio paveikslo spalvos. Ne vienareikšmiai, tokie daugiasluoksniai, kaip ir meno kūriniai – su daug spalvų ir atspalvių, skirtingai sužibantys skirtingoje šviesoje. Čia ir stipri, net absoliučios rutiniškos kasdienybės akivaizdoje pagauli istorija – ne meilės, ačiū Dievui. Bent jau ne tokios meilės, kokią galbūt įsivaizduotume. Ir šioji kur kas įdomesnė, kur kas sudėtingesnė, todėl ir įsimintina.

Tracy Chevalier – tikra žodžio virtuozė. Ji nuostabiai piešia takoskyrą tarp niūrios, banalios, nereikšmingos kasdienybės, kurioje po vienu stogu patiri ir didžiausius pažeminimus, ir didžiausius malonumus. Bet net ir šie niekada nebūna vienareikšmiai – tiek vieni, tiek kiti romane reiškia auką. Ir klausimas, kuri didesnė – tarnauti žmogui, ar tarnauti menui. Klausimas, kuri skausmingesnė. Daug vietos autorė palieka skaitytojo interpretacijai, tačiau mane ypač džiugino pagrindinės veikėjos portretas – Grėtė tokia tikra, kad net skauda. Retas atvejis, kuomet šešiolikmetės portretas nepasirodo erzinantis, o „coming of age“ aspektas nebūna tik toleruotinas, tolimas jau subrendusiam skaitytojui. Įspūdingas jos moralinis stuburas, stiprybė, tramdomas vaikiškas naivumas, stiprus vidinis pojūtis, dažniausiai vedantis tinkama etine linkme, tačiau paaugliškai suklaidinantis realizmo vardan. Verti paminėjimo visi, absoliučiai visi romano veikėjai – tai vienas tų atvejų, kuomet autorei neprireikia storos knygos, kad visus paverstų įsimintinais, ryškiais, beprotiškai skirtingais: nuo ignoruojamos isterijos, iki skausmingos apatijos. Daug šioje knygoje sunkių, net beviltiškų emocijų, bet skaitosi ji lengvai ir greitai – retas atvejis, kuomet knyga tokia ryškiai atmosferiška, kinematografiška, autorei nedaugžodžiaujant.

Abejoju, ar suklysčiau pasakydama, kad knyga žiauri – tai nėra nei romantiškas, nei lengvas skaitinys. Jos bekompromisis realizmas neleidžia autorei nuklysti nei į saldumą, nei į 17-ojo amžiaus visuomenėje vietos neturintį naivumą, idealizmą – bet kokios jų užuominos užgniaužiamos vos užgimę. Visi veikėjai, visi sprendimai turi labai aiškias vietas, o romano pabaiga tik įrodo, jog Chevalier nedaro jokių nuolaidų patrauklesnio siužeto vardan – taip autorė ir tampa išskirtiniu balsu pseudo-istorinės literatūros kontekste.

My birthday gift from a friend, rare happened because very tricky to buy a book for someone else, but I know why she did. GIRL WITH PEARL EARRING is a beautiful story, engaging, well-drawn characters, art and historically interesting.
The story is about one painting, a young girl who forces to works as a maid in Johannes Vermeer's house (1632-1675), a Dutch painter. I think this book is more than a love story, the only reason I give 4.5 is the end of it, but it is not disappointing after all. My friend knew that I would enjoy it a lot. Highly recommended.

Um livro muito plástico e impressivo onde nos é aberta a porta da casa e do estúdio de um dos maiores expoentes da arte flamenga do século XVII, Johannes Vermeer. Da casa do pintor situada no Canto dos Papistas, as janelas abertas para a cidade de Delft permitem ao leitor sentir o pulsar de vida de uma típica cidade mercantil holandesa e divisar toda a amálgama social que nela se movimentava. As criadas, os açougueiros, os mercadores ricos, os modestos pintores de azulejos.

E tudo nos chega através do olhar atento e arguto de Griet, a criada dos Vermeer que, não deixando de ser uma mulher do seu tempo com todas as limitações que tal implicava, é impelida a escolher o seu destino.

Em termos simplistas, esta é a história muito bem contada de como um brinco de pérola salvou um quadro e a dignidade de uma mulher.

n  Acest roman nu este doar despre emoțiile personajelor sau despre o acțiune care să te țină cu sufletul la gură, este și despre culori, lumină, picturi, despre iubire în toate formele ei, ne pur și simplu ceea ce s-ar numi o carte frumoasă, tare fericită sunt că am citit-o.

Totul mi-a plăcut, atmosfera, personajele, scriitura, povestea, arta în jurul căruia e construit.

Eroina noastră, Griet, nu e doar o slujnică, prin ea, autoarea ne trăsnite, într-o lume în care femeile aveau foarte puține șanse, fiind doar “datoare” să facă copiii sau să curețe gospodarii, a secolului XVII, că se poate să însemni ceva mai mult, să ai opinii, să inspiri. Povestea sa din momentul în care îl cunoaște pe faimosul pictor, Johannesburg Verneer, e fascinantă. Asistam la maturizarea sa, la zbuciumul său interior, o însoțim pe drumul spre cea mai importantă alegere din viața sa, dar și pe drumul visării.
Toate personajele au fost atât de bine construite, încât mi-au plăcut toate. Orașul Delft e și el un personaj. Luna trecută l-am vizitat pentru prima oară, e atât de frumos precum îl descrie Griet, am simțit că o însoțeam pe străzile sale.

Am citit unele păreri care spuneau că neiubitorilor de artă nu le va plăcea neaparat acest roman, eu sunt doar o iubitoare de frumos, deloc o cunoscătoare, dar lecturarea acestui roman mi-a adus foarte multă liniște. E una dintre cărțile cu adevărat bune citite în mine în ultima vreme și o recomand cu mult drag.

“Picturile nu sunt nici catolice, nici protestante, a spus el, catolici sau protestanți sunt oamenii care le privesc; catolic sau protestant este ceea ce așteaptă ei să vadă. Pictura în biserică e aidoma lumânării într-o încăpere cufundată în întuneric - o folosim pentru a vedea mai bine. E puntea între noi și Dumnezeu. Lumânarea însă nu e nici protestantă, nici catolică. E lumânare și atât.”

“Picturile pot servi unui scop spiritual pentru catolici, dar nu uita că protestanții îl văd pe Dumnezeu pretutindeni și în fiecare lucru.”

“Nu te amăgi singură, fată. A spus foarte puține cuvinte despre tine. Dar a fost destul de clar - el a coborât și s-a interesat personal - fiica mea a înțeles atunci că îți tine partea. Nu, el i-a reproșat că nu izbutește să-și crească cum se cuvine copiii. Mult mai inteligent, înțelegi, să o critice pe ea, decât să te laude pe tine.”

“Ești prinsă acolo unde n-ar trebui să fii, Griet, a spus Pieter mai binevoitor. Lumea lor nu-i lumea ta.”

I loved that this novel brought forth an explanation for one of history’s most iconic paintings. Well written and imaginative, but also down to earth and very believable. I only wish the the ending was not so abrupt, the aftermath of events could have been explored in an interesting way. Nonetheless it was an enjoyable read for any art lover.
