A satire from the 16th century told from the perspective of Folly herself, and a criticism against pretentiousness and those who take themselves and their world too seriously. Life is made bearable by a bit of irrationality, a bit of foolishness. Do not let fear of understanding put you off from reading this. The language is certainly playful (which I loved), but it is not overly difficult to make sense of. Having some basic knowledge of Greek gods/deities will help a lot, and some familiarity with the Bible for the final third, but other than that it is fairly straightforward. The opening third was the strongest and funniest, the rest felt a little repetitive, as if the point had already been made. The narrator as a personification of Folly was certainly fun, but I do question how closely she represented "Folly" or "Madness" as it was understood in Erasmus' time.

در ستایش دیوانگی اثری از یک راهب هلندی به نام‌ اراسموس است. این کتاب از جمله آثار کلاسیک نهضت اصلاح دین در اروپا است.
در ستایش دیوانگی را به پیشنهاد کسی نخواندم. عنوان کتاب برایم جذاب بود این که فردی در ستایش دیوانگی بنویسد به گمانم می‌تواند برای مخاطب جالب باشد.
در این کتاب نویسنده به اوضاع اجتماعی، استبداد و بیداد مقامات مذهبی مسیحی در قالب تفتیش عقاید انتقاد می‌کند. او تمامی دستگاه پاپ و فرقه‌های پرقدرت مسیحی را با زبان طنز و شوخی مورد انتقادی صریح و شکننده قرار می‌دهد!
نکته‌ی جالب کتاب نیز همین زبان طنز نویسنده است که خواندن کتاب را برای خواننده خسته‌کننده نمی‌کند! این که چگونه دیوانگی می‌تواند باعث شادمانی مردم گردد نکته اصلی کتاب بود! آیا دیوانگی به این آسانی است؟ آیا واقعاً دیوانگی می‌تواند آدمیان را به خوشبختی برساند؟! به گمانم خود اراسموس نیز در پایان کتاب دچار تردیدی در بیان مفهوم دیوانگی شده است چرا که می‌گوید: " دیوانگی حتی در میان دیوانگان تا چه حد بد نام است" اما گویا اراسموس نیز چون مولانا چاره‌ای نمی‌بیند جز دیوانگی: "چاره‌ای کو بهتر از دیوانگی"!

“I must learn to love the fool in me the one who feels too much, talks too much, takes too many chances, wins sometimes and loses often, lacks self-control, loves and hates, hurts and gets hurt, promises and breaks promises, laughs and cries”

This was said by Theodore Rubin, but it was first said in Praise of Folly. This wonderful book brings life and illumination to that above quote and helps you to appreciate it's fullest meaning. To anyone who would be better: read this book, it will show you how to love your fool.
The marvelous thing about this book is that it is still so fresh, it made me think, it made me change my mind and it made me laugh aloud. I can't offer better recommendation than that.

Erasmus'un arkadaşı More'un kitabı Ütopya gibi bu kitap da çağının ötesine geçememiş bir kitap. Bu 2 kitabın bugün bu kadar popüler olmasını şaşırtıcı buluyorum. Ben de popüler olduğu için bir şey var zannedip okumak gafletinde bulundum. Kitabı okurken "Bu kadar çok boş lafı bir arada daha önce görmemiştim" diye düşündüm, bu açıdan gerçekten baş döndürücüydü.

Erasmus dostu Thomas More'u eğlendirmek için bir yolculuk sırasında bir haftada yazdığını söylediği bir kitaptır. Deliliği her yaşta ve her durumda insanları hayata egemen kılan ve insanları mutlu eden bir şey olarak görür. Hayatta sadece ebsürd görülenler değil; normal yaşamda da karşılaştığımız pek çok güçlük ve saçmalığa karşı duran insanın da deli olduğu için karşı koyabildiğini öne sürer.

اراسموس کشیش کاتولیک و منتقد بود. وقتی پادکست مارتین لوتر رو گوش میدادم متوجه شدم به طور غیرمستقیم لوتر، شاگرد اراسموس محسوب می‌شده. محور نوشته‌هایش اتحاد و دوری از جنگ و آزادی عقیده بود که نوشته‌هایش توسط واتیکان اکثرا سوزانده شد. معروف‌ترین اثرش هم در ستایش دیوانگی است. با زبان طنز استبداد مقامات مسیحی را مورد انتقاد قرار داده... در ۸ روز کتاب نوشته شده و مورد استقبال قرار گرفت...

Ahmaklığın övüldüğü hiciv ve nükte kitabı. Şu anki anladığımız anlamıyla betimleyecek olursak delilikten değil budalalıktan bahsediyor. Yücel Sivri'nin çevirisini pek beğendim.

Erasmus kitapta Ahmaklık'ın ağzından konuşuyor. Erasmus Ahmaklık'ın dişi olmasını ve söylediklerini bir kadının ağzından söylemeyi tercih etmiş. Fazla gevezece biraz budalaca böyle bir yazının ancak bir kadının söylevi olabileceğine kanaat getirmiş. Demek söylevini erkeksi değil kadınsı bulmuş. Erkeğe yakışmayan ama kadında sırıtmayan bir söylev. Yani; kadının ahmak oluşunu, Ahmaklık'ın da kadın oluşunu okuyoruz Erasmus'tan. Erasmus diyor ki, söylediklerim size ahmakça gelebilir ama beni mazur görün çünkü unutmayın ki ben bir kadınım. Bu tutumunun da ironi içerdiğini düşünsek de, sevgili Erasmus, gülemedik.

Kadınların aklının kısalığı, bilgeliğe ulaşamayacakları, erkeklerin hoşuna gitmekten başka hayattan beklentileri olmadığı, kadınların cazibelerinin budalalığa borçlu olduğunun yadsınamayacağını anlattığı kısımlarda da gülememeye devam ettik.

İlahiyatçılar ve filozoflar üzerinden nükte yaptığı kısımlar sanırım en güldüğüm kısımlar oldu. Ağır ve zor okunan bir kitap olduğu yaygın düşüncesinin aksine rahat okunan bir kitap olduğunu düşünüyorum. Sadece kitabın yarısından itibaren artık aynı şeyleri söylediğini düşünüp sıkılmaya başlayabiliyoruz. Özellikle mitolojik karakterlerden bahsetmesi eğer mitolojiye uzaksak en sıkan kısım olabiliyor. Güldürücü konuşmaların fazla uzaması konuşmanın güldürücü etkisini öldürür çoğu zaman. Erasmus'unki de biraz fazla uzuyor.

Ancak Erasmus'un yolda giderken birkaç gün gibi bir sürede sadece içinden geldiği gibi eleştirmek isteyerek kalemi oynattığı bir yazı olduğunu unutmamak gerek. Ve de kitabın yegane misyonunun güldürmek olmadığını aslında Erasmus'un dikkate alınmasını istediği ağır eleştiri ve yergi içerdiğini de.

It's a shame that I wasn't able to connect with this book, since its themes are always fascinating. It depends on the execution, naturally. The praise turned into one awfully verbose torment. I imagined Folly talking to me at some café, an incessant chatter using some annoying little voice, like having Jiminy Cricket inside your ear prattling nonsense with tons of sugar in his system, and me, waiting for a coffee that never comes, watching people through the window as they walk by, alone with their thoughts amid the noise of the street and the silence of their own self-centeredness. n  I fill your minds with mirth, fancies, and jollities...n, she said. And all I wanted was to inject some sanity into her bloodstream so she would shut the hell up.

It's a short work - some gems here and there - but I spent days and days picturing myself turning the last page and freeing myself from such pompous goddess. I read and already forgot most of it. I wasn't even awake to relish its supposedly satirical delights. Perhaps I just wasn't in the right frame of mind for this. But my levels of curiosity are not enough to try this some other time. I only chose to read it now since I'm planning on writing an article on the subject and thought Eramus' essay might be another source of inspiration. It wasn't, but I may use it for articles on monotony and how to lower expectations.
