Es esta la última y gran obra de Dostoyevski, en la que van a parar todas las preocupaciones éticas y religiosas que aparecen a lo largo de su novelística. Plantea, en una trama dramática de gran intensidad, problemas éticos insolubles que él mismo vivió dolorosamente a lo largo de su atormentada existencia. La muerte del padre-inhumano, ruin, hipócrita, borracho y lujurioso- hace recaer las sospechas sobre uno de sus hijos, Ivan Karamazov, que "Todos somos culpables de la muerte del padre, Miti, yo, Smerdiakov, todos vosotros, porque todos deseamos su muerte; todos somos parricidas", planteando así uno de los ejes de la obra del la moralidad de los actos humanos y, en concreto, del crimen enfocado en su aspecto moral como delito y en el religioso como pecado, las dos grandes obsesiones de Dostoyevski, para las cuales no existe una respuesta unívoca.
