Kahlil Gibran (Arabic: جبران خليل جبران) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer.
Born in the town of Bsharri in modern-day Lebanon (then part of Ottoman Mount Lebanon), as a young man he emigrated with his family to the United States where he studied art and began his literary career. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.
He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again, especially in the 1960s counterculture.
Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu.

I wish there were more information about the translator and the poems/short stories themselves.
UPDATE: After much research for a class, I found that the poems are all originally written in Arabic and translated into English (I forgot the name of the translator). The translator is not mentioned, I believe, to maintain the reputation as an English writer Gibran has from the Prophet. The translation actually glorifies Gibran's early poems that are in reality crude and - in my opinion - do not live up to his mature writing.
Still a great collection to have, but don't bother reading the Arabic.

اذن نتعرف هنا على عوالم جبران خليل جبران
عالم من الفنتازيا يشبه كثيرا القصص الاوروبية حيث الغابة والبساتين والجنيات والاميرات، هذه هي عوالمه التي تسحره وتسحر قراءه
لديه رؤية فلسفية للكون تتسم بعمق ما، وقصائده تحمل في طياتها الكثير،
ويوجد بعض مما قاله يصلح كاقتباسات رائعة
ولكن لم يرقني هذا الشاعر..شيء ما جعلني لا استسيغ ما يقول
هل هي الفلسفة والمحتوى الذي لم اتقبله ، ام اللغة المعربة ، ام الاسلوب ، ام ان الشاعر غربي في ثقافته ولغته وكل شيء
واحس بأن شعره بعيد كثيرا عن روح الشرق، وربما اكون مخطئا
لايصلح الكتاب لصغار السن

لقد أتعبتني كثيرا يا جبران
لذالك ألتمسك عذرا لاني لم أكمل هذا الكتاب
إنّ طرحك يؤلمني و القراءة لك أصبحت نوعا من العذاب المازوشي
سأضلّ أحفظ من هذا الكتاب بدايته
“أنا لا أبدل أحزان قلبي بأفراح الناس و لا أرضى أن تنقلب الدموع التي تستدرّها الكآبة من جوارحي و تصير ضحكا . أتمنى أن تبقى حياتي دمعة و ابتسامة : دمعة تطهر قلبي و تفهمني أسرار الحياة و غوامضها ، و ابتسامة تدنيني من أبناء بجدتي و تكون رمز تمجيدي الآلهة . دمعة أشارك بها منسحقي القلب ، و ابتسامة تكون عنوان فرحي بوجودي .”
