José Saramago nu încetează să mă surprindă cu fiecare carte pe care o descopăr, toate scrierile sale fiind o adevărată artă.
Cartea de față, se dorește a fi o reinterpretare a ,,Mitului peșterii’’, obiectiv ce este îndeplinit cu mare succes, dar alăturând și alte teme, cum ar fi: diferența dintre generații, conflictul familial, evoluția omului, iluziile pe care omul și le crează despre lumea înconjurătoare, moartea și bineînțeles, rescrierea ,,Mitului peșterii’’.
Nu merită citită, ci trebuie citită, fiind un adevărat îndemn la reflecție asupra existenței umane și oferind perspective noi asupra problemelor contemporane.

,,Autoritare, paralizante, circulare, uneori eliptice, frazele de efect, numite în glumă pepite de aur, sunt un flagel malign, dintre cele mai primejdioase care au pustiit lumea. Le spunem celor cu mintea confuză, Cunoaște-te pe tine însuți, ca și cum cunoașterea de sine n-ar fi a cincea și cea mai dificilă operație din aritmeticile umane, le spunem celor abulici, Dacă vrei, poți, de parcă realitățile bestiale ale lumii nu s-ar amuza în fiecare zi inversând poziția relativă a verbelor, le spunem nehotărâților, Începe cu începutul, ca și cum începutul ar fi capătul vizibil al unui fir răsucit stângaci de care ar fi de ajuns să tragem și să tot tragem până ajungem la capătul celălalt….’’

Ok, This is Saramago. How could I NOT give it 5 stars? I love this author. This is the 5th novel I have read of his, and I was really quite impressed with it.

Here we meet Cipriano Algor, a humble potter supplying the Center with his plates and mugs and water jugs. Poor in material things, but certainly not in spirit. I wanted so badly to be able to meet Cipriano, to sit beside him and listen to him talk while I ruffeled his dog Founds' ears. I wanted to ride beside him in the van as he delivered his wares to the Center. I wanted to help him fill that hollow and wonder what it would look like when we were dead and gone, and I wanted to be there, holding his hand when he entered the Cave, to see what he saw, and know what he knew.

Saramago has a way of pulling you into his stories and making you a part of what he is writing. Written in a very unique fashion, void of all normal punctuation, he weaves his haunting tales in such a simplistic way that no other author will ever be able to come close to reproducing.

Saramago is absolutely the greatest author I have ever read.
If you havent picked up one of his novels, You have no idea what you are missing.

La Caverna es una visión de un mundo posible, donde los seres humanos optan por vivir dentro de los mismos espacios comerciales que les venden lo que necesitan o creen que necesitan. Es una metáfora de la vida en países desarrollados o países que, de lo contrario, se engañan a sí mismos en virtud de una prosperidad meramente aparente. También es una alegoría que retoma el mito platónico. El epígrafe que abre el libro dice: Qué escena más extraña describe y qué extraños prisioneros, son como nosotros. Pues, ¿Somos como los prisioneros de la cueva de Platón que creían que las sombras que se movían en la pared eran la realidad? Esta pregunta nos lleva a reflexionar sobre su narración, donde explica cómo en un espacio cavernoso se encuentran varios hombres desde su nacimiento, encerrados y atados con cadenas. Esta sujeción les impide volver la cara y solo pueden mirar hacia adelante. Detrás de ellos, hay la luz de un fuego que arde y que proyecta las sombras de otros prisioneros que transportan mercancías a través de un camino situado en un plano más alto. Los prisioneros, que solo pueden mirar en una dirección, solo perciben esas sombras como su visión del mundo exterior. El filósofo nos plantea qué sucedería si de repente pudieran volver la cabeza. ¿Cuál sería su realidad? ¿La que han conocido desde que nacieron o la nueva que ven? Pero, ¿qué pasaría si sacaran a uno de esos hombres al exterior y viera la luz del sol? ¿Volvería a su vida anterior tras haber conocido y comprendido el mundo exterior? Y si este hombre volviera a la caverna para liberar a sus antiguos compañeros, ¿sería capaz de convencerlos? Probablemente no. No solo se burlarían de él, sino que incluso tal vez intentarían matarlo. La idea es que lo que llega a nuestros sentidos no tiene por qué ser la realidad absoluta, y siempre podemos descubrir una realidad diferente a la que vivimos en este momento. Como dijo Saramago: La caverna ha sido escrita para que la gente salga de la caverna.

I read "Blindness" by Saramago and really liked it, but "The Cave" didn't really do anything for me. Apparently, a lot of people consider this to be a brilliant and illuminating novel, and though I can see why they might say that, it was lost on me.

This book basically rambles on for 300 pages about an old potter and his struggle to find meaning in his life. Basically he makes pottery for a large residential/commercial complex and lives with his daughter and son in law. The complex tells him they don't want his product anymore. He starts making ceramic dolls to see if they'll want those. They don't. He finds a dog and befriends a widow. They move into the complex. This is the plot of the book up to about page 290. Seriously. It was very dry and boring.

The jacket cover of the book was totally deceiving, but not because the story was different. Strangely, the jacket cover tells you EVERYTHING that happens in the story. That's it. If you read the summary of the book here on Goodreads, it's similar. Normally you would expect this to be the starting point of the book and that it would develop from there, but no. It doesn't.

I guess you could squeeze out a few drops of social allegory from this story, but it was difficult for me. There are some touching moments in the book and some intriguing sentences, but they are few and far between. I don't deny that Saramago is a talented writer, he is. But in my opinion, he could have done much better with this one.

What a good start to my reading year.

I found the long paragraphs, and the conversations with no quotation marks made the book a bit hard to follow.

However, I enjoyed the story, both the story and the underlying issues that it raised. It's the third book by Saramago that I have read. Now my library has several of them as ebooks, so I'll definitely be reading more of them.

And now to the dog! I'm not a person who's particularly fond of dogs, and for much of my life I was scared of them. I thought the dog in this book was great. I really liked him and I really cared about him. I couldn't believe that an author could encourage me to become so fond of a dog. What a writer!

"Nosotros que sólo podemos ser lo que fuimos, de repente descubrimos que ya no somos necesarios en el mundo, si es que alguna vez lo fuimos, pero creer que lo éramos parecía bastante, parecía suficiente, y era en cierta manera eterno, durante el tiempo que la vida durase, que eso es la eternidad, nada más que eso".

Volver a leer a Saramago siempre se siente como volver a casa.

Cada que termino un libro de él me deja cautivado e impresionado por su prolífica y magnánima sabiduría, siempre cavilando y reflexionando sobre la filosofía implícita de la condición humana y sus instrumentos, me gusta en particular que en esta historia oscile un poderoso tributo hacia los animales y a las palabras.

La caverna nos expone una crítica hacía la globalización, el consumismo, el comercio, la gentrificación, el ecocidio, el marketing y la publicidad, la inmediatez del mercado y el comportamiento volátil de las masas, remarcando las inminente contrariedad entre la vida citadina y la vida rural, que va más allá de las diferencias de clase, si no de las formas de vivir y de pensar de cada una.

La deidad del Centro, que es la que define el estilo de vida cosmopolita, sometiendo a sus ciudadanos a una vida superflua e ilusoria que se sobrelleva con los privilegios que les han “otorgado”. Por otro lado, el capitalismo destruyendo desconsideradamente los negocios exteriores que no se adapten a las exigencias modernas del precio y la calidad.

La construcción de centros comerciales sobre campos naturales, para que nuestras vidas se basen en consumir, entretenerse y olvidar lo nimia que resulta nuestra existencia.
El final me dejó atónito, dejándonos en claro hasta qué punto el capitalismo es capaz de lucrar con nuestra propia muerte, un acierto inquietante pero verídico.

Saramago’s novels have always been and will be food for my soul; and this one is no exception. In his unique way, love, family, myth, tradition, philosophy, are intertwined in an, apparently, simple dystopian setup, only it is anything but. It’s a complex allegory, in which identity and freedom (of thoughts, of oneself, of choice), the most precious treasures one can have, are the main characters.

It’s one of those books you have to relish, to absorb every nuance. It was a delight and I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of his written thoughts.

وبرايي كـ بسمة اننا دلوقتي لا عايشين حياة ريفية بدائية هادية، ولا عايشين حياة المدينة بكل فرصها ومرافقها ومزاياها، إحنا عايشين في ريف أسمنت...!!

وكعادة سارماجو وحبه للجمل الطويلة اللي ممكن توصل صفحة ونص جملة واحدة بس واهمال النقط والفواصل خلت الموضوع مرهق جداا والنهاية عبيطة اوي بعد ٤٠٠ بيدج طلع عيني فيهم

أجمل ما في الرواية هو دخول ساراماجو كراوية للحكاية ومعلل ومناقش للأحداث والحوارات ومحلل للمشاعر وردود الأفعال ، العائلة الصغيرة والمعمل والمستقبل والحرية وقيود الواقع والحاجة للعمل والحب والإنتماء للكوخ الصغير والسماء وشجرة التوت ، السوق أو المركز والمدنية الباذخة التي حاولت التحكم بهم وجذبهم لكن في أعماقها عرفوا قيمة أن يكونوا خارجها بل وبعيداً جداً عنها ،، رواية رائعة أخرى من ساراماجو

كهف العالم الرأسمالي الذي نعيش فيه , ولا نعيه بسبب كثرة الاحداث والمشاغل اليومية ..

لفهم رواية ساراماغو الرائعة الكهف لابد لك ان تمر اولا على كهف افلاطون الذي جعله على شكل حوار على لسان شخصيته المفضلة سقراط و تلميذ له جلوكون .

في وصف انسان الكهف المقيد للاوهام امامه يستنكر جلوكون بقوله يالهم من سجناء غرباء ، فيرد عليه سقراط لكنهم مثلنا ..

مثلهم نعم نحن محاطين باشياءانا الخاصة باجهزتنا ونمط حياتنا الذي يبدو وضع انه لايسير بشكل صحيح الا بروتين معين ولتسليتنا نحن ننخرط اكثر واكثر بما ينتجه البشر من اساليب ترفيهية بصرية وسمعية وخلافه لكان العقل يظل مقيدا فينسى معها انها دخيل .

في كهف ساراماغو هناك المركز الضخم الذي يبتلع الامتار متوسعا ، خالقا داخله عالم من المتع الحسية التي قد تعوض عن الخروج منه قد تقول في بداية الامر نعم هناك حياة وهي لامثيل لها ولامكن تخيلها لكن مابين، العدم والجدوى يخرج الجور سيبريانو بلا شيء ، كل شيء مصطنع مادي في الداخل حتى الهواء ، بينمافي الخارج تقبع شجرة التوت الجميلة بجانب البيت الحقيقي وبجانبه فرن الفخار وان كان قد خسر استمراريته ككل شيء ينتهي الا انه كان اكثر من حياة ، حياة حقيقة وملموسة .
استهل ساراماغو الرواية من كهف افلاطون وبعد بداية الرواية بدات الاحداث الهادئة تفسر بعضها بعضا لكادح يعمل لاجل قوت يومه لكل احداثه ومع الحوارات الممتعة بنه وبين ابنته مشاركا لقية الكلب التي ستتواجه معه ايها القاريء وفي افكاره في اول كتاب اشعر انني لمست تفكير حيوان او ماتتنازعه نفسه الداخلية مع تفاعله مع اسياده .
ايضا ماحببته وصف عملية الخلق الطين الذي يتشكل والنفخة التي جاءت بسرد سارامغو بديعة جدا يرسم ساراماغو بشكل ديني وميثلوجي بحت عمل صانع الفخار من اوله لاخره بالتفصيل الممتع اللذيذ .
الرواية كما قلت قبل الاستطراد تاخد منحى هاديء وروتيني تتخلها دراما قليلة كمحرك للاحداث ويرنمقها اسلوب ساراماغو المسرع لها والحوارات التي اقرب للتحليل ساردا علاقة صانع فخار كممون لمركز تجاري ينمو وينتعش حتى تتغير اذواق زبائنه وبذلك يتوقف التعامل مع صانع الفخار فيواجه الصانع وضعا جديدا يستصعب التعامل معه بداية فيحاول مجاراته بعد طلبية كبيرة ليستسلم انه لابد من ان تتغير امور كثيرة وان يسلك طرق التغيير التي تطرحها الحياة بعيدا عن الاستلقاء في وضعية سجناء الكهف ..

Immenso come sempre, nei contenuti, negli approfondimenti degli stati d'animo, nelle caratterizzazioni delle situazioni. Quando leggo Saramago è come quando, in alcuni casi, la sera mi appresto ad andare a dormire, mi siedo sul letto guardando la stanza nella luce debole della abatjour ed incomincio a fantasticare su ciò che è successo nella giornata appena passata, nelle situazioni piacevoli, quelle meno piacevoli e quelle strane. Poi spengo l'abat-jour e mi sdraio nel buio quasi totale, rischiarato solamente da alcuni punti in cui la luce lunare riesce a penetrare nella stanza e la mente vaga nelle più disparate delle situazioni, fino a che il sonno prevale sull'immaginazione...
Questo scrittore ha un qualcosa che va oltre la "semplice" scrittura di un libro, perchè per la maggior parte dei libri si abbina un "genere", ed invece con Saramago c'è tutto!
