Nhân dịp ở nhà quá lâu thì Lăng recommend cho mình quyển này. Nên giờ mình cũng muốn recommend cho mọi người. Quyển này thực sự rất đáng đọc, đọc xong hiểu ra cách Mỹ lôi kéo đồng minh để làm bá chủ thế giới ntn. Đọc xong mới ngẫm ra à thì ra tư tưởng đế quốc của họ đã có từ rất lâu rồi. Nếu thế giới là một xã hội thu nhỏ thì các nước lớn cũng như những người giàu. Họ hơn người thường một cái đầu, và cái đầu đó luôn có tham vọng, mưu mẹo khôn ngoan để dòng tiền luôn trở về nuôi béo chính họ. Đọc xong rồi ngẫm tiếp không biết đằng sau quan hệ ngoại giao và các khoản viện trợ của Mỹ, Nhật, Hàn cho Việt Nam cần đánh đổi những gì. Cái đó chẳng ai dám nói hay viết ra.

Đọc xong mà cảm thấy buồn cho tình cảnh của các nước nằm trong âm mưu của Mỹ, là các bậc thang xếp gọn để Mỹ bước lên đến đỉnh vinh quang: Panama, Ecuado, Venezuala, Iraq, Iran, Ả rập, (OPEC) Afghanistan.. và cả những nc nghèo như Indo, Việt Nam. Có lẽ là những người dân chứng kiến những gì Mỹ đã làm bây giờ đã k còn nữa, họ đã thuộc về một thế giới khác, những thế hệ tiếp theo sẽ k được kể những câu chuyện này (như mình hoàn toàn k ai giải thích cho) và đối với riêng Việt Nam thì chiến tranh đã qua rồi, kinh tế cũng khá hơn trước. Nhưng hiện tại hậu quả vẫn đang còn tồn tại ở nhiều nơi. Đọc xong mình ko thấy ghét Syria, Cuba, Iran hay các nước bị cấm vận nữa. Mình thấy thương những người dân sống ở đó nhiều hơn. Thực tế thì họ đã ko đc phép lựa chọn hoàn cảnh của mình.

Trùng hợp là mình cũng bắt đầu 1 công việc ở MUFG Bank trong mảng Scan sanctions. (FYI Cv nghe có vẻ nguy hiểm sang choảnh nhưng mình vẫn cảm thấy buồn nhiều lắm vì ko còn đc hoang dại thoải mái như trc, và mình vẫn ăn 1 mình và k nói chuyện với ai :) Công việc chính của mình là check các giao dịch có liên quan đến 5 nước bị cấm vận, xong mình kiểu vừa đọc quyển này vừa thấy tội họ. Chắc nói ra bị Sếp vs đồng nghiệp chửi cho mất. Nhưng thực tế là chính phủ của các nc đó cũng k được lựa chọn làm người tốt, còn những người dân thì quá vô tội.

Thôi thì vì mình cũng ko giàu, vì mình sinh ra từ một nước nghèo, nên sẽ học cách trân trọng những gì mình đang có vậy, sẽ bù đắp vật chất bằng tinh thần, tình cảm, văn chương, và nhìn vào những điều tốt đẹp. Đó cũng là một cách vui vẻ mà sống, đó là tạm quên đi năng lực vốn có và hoàn cảnh k thể nào thay đổi, vui vẻ chọn sống như một người bình thường. Còn những nước giàu như Mỹ thì dù có nhiều tiền họ cũng chẳng mấy vui vẻ khi hiểu được vì sao họ lại giàu. Trừ phi họ có thể quên đi. Việc sống ntn phụ thuộc vào lựa chọn mỗi người thôi.

كتاب مهم بقلم واحد من احد القراصنة القدامى المسؤولين عن توريط الدول في سلسلة لا تنتهي من القروض بدون تنمية حقيقية على أرض الواقع.
الكتاب يفسر كيف احتلت الولايات المتحدة تقريبا جميع العالم بدون حملات صليبية كما كان يجري في الماضي و كيف تسخر ثرواته لمكاسبها الشخصية تحت ستار قروض صندوق النقد الدولي و المعونات الأمريكية ، و كيف أنها على اتم الاستعداد لمواجهة التمرد على مخططاتها بالاغتيال او حتى الاحتلال كما حدث في العراق حديثاً.
الكتاب ربما يحكي عن حقبة قديمة نسبياً في أواخر السبعينات و أوائل الثمانينات و لكنه مازال صالح للمقارنة لما يحدث في عصرنا الحالي .

الإغتيال الإقتصادي للأمم – جون بركنز

جون بركنز هو إقتصادي أمريكي من مواليد 1945.. قضى فترة طويلة من حياته يعمل في مجال الإستشارات الإقتصادية لصالح شركة دولية تسمى "مين" وقد أثار الجدل بإصداره هذا الكتاب عام 2004 مدعياً فيه أنه كان يعمل كـ "سفاح إقتصادي" وتم تجنيده بشكل غير مباشر من قبل أجهزة أمنية أمريكية.
بلا شك أن هذا كتاب مثير للجدل.. خاصة بين الذين يؤمنون بنظرية المؤامرة وبين هؤلاء الذين يرفضونها جملة وتفصيلاً.. على أي حال قبل أن نصل إلى هذه النقطة من الأشياء التي أريد التعليق عليها.. سنقوم باستعراض نقاط أخرى.

حسناً، لنفكر في الأمر للحظة؛ إن بركنز يقر في هذا الكتاب بكونه كان مسؤولاً عن تلك الأفعال الشائنة التي زادت من فقر فئة ضخمة من الفقراء في دول متعددة حول العالم. والأمر أخذ منه أكثر من 30 عاماً حتى يصدر لنا هذا الكتاب.. وقد ذكر لنا أنه كان يفكر طوال الوقت وبدافع من ضميره في أخلاقية عمله هذا.. وقد شجعته صديقته باولا.. ثم وصل إلى قرار الإستقالة وهو في رحلة بحرية مع زميلته الشابة "ماري" والتي كانت مستلقية في مقدمة اليخت. يا له من ضمير بورجوازي ذلك الذي تملكه يا سيد بركنز. وفي ذات الوقت لم ينسَ السيد بركنز أن يذكرنا بين الصفحة والأخرى أنه من نسب توم بين الذي كان ضمن الثوار الأوئل ضد الإنجليز في حرب الإستقلال الأمريكية. كما إنه لربما يرى في نفسه بول ريفير هذا العصر.. وهو صانع الفضة زمن حرب الإستقلال الأمريكية والذي كان يعدو بجواده في مدن نيوإنجلند ويلوح بقبعته ويصيح "البريطانيون قادمون". ويقول بركنز عنه في آخر كتابه: لقد خاطر ريفير بحياته ليوقظ الناس، واستجاب له الأمريكيون الأوفياء. لقد أوقفوا الإمبراطورية، فلنعد إذن ولنستلهم الدرس. هو يعتقد حقاً أنه يقوم بدور ريفير الذي يخاطر بنفسه من أجل إيقاف ظلم الإمبراطورية البريطانية الإستعمارية.

تتوافق رؤية بركنز في هذا الكتاب وتصوره عن نظام الحكم في الولايات المتحدة مع ما ذكره جاك رانسييه في كتابه "كراهية الديمقراطية" حيث أن بركنز يقول أن الحكم في أمريكا تقوده لوبيات الشركات الكبرى ورجال الأعمال الذين يستغلون السياسة الأمريكية في حماية مصالحهم الشخصية.. وهذا يتفق مع حكم الأقلية القوية التي تحدث عنه رانسييه.. "الأوليغارشية". وإذا فكرنا بالأمر واستعرضنا تاريخ الإنتخابات الأمريكية نجد أن الأمر صحيح إلى حد ما.
والآن، إلى أشياء أكثر إثارة للإهتمام من معلومات إقتصادية. فقد كنتُ قد تحدثتُ سابقاً عن ذلك الإنقلاب في سياسة النقد الأمريكية التي توجت عام 1971 بفك الإرتباط بين قيمة الدولار بما يدعمه من ذهب أو أي شيء آخر عدا الضمانة الشرفية التي تقدمها حكومة الولايات المتحدة لقيمة الدولار.. وهذا أمرٌ له تبعات حيث أن الدولار تتم طباعته دون أي شيء يدعم قيمته.. وبكلمات أخرى تتم طباعته كلما دعت الحاجة لذلك ! وهذا بدوره يحول الدولار إلى سلعة قائمة بحد ذاتها. تتحكم عوامل السوق من عرض وطلب بمدى الحاجة لطبع المزيد من الدولارات. وهي حالة فريدة لا تماثلها أي دولة أخرى في العالم. من ذا الذي يستغني عن الدولار في السوق العالمية ؟ وهذا بالضبط ما راهنت عليها الولايات المتحدة حين أقدمت على تلك الخطوة الجريئة. وهي بديهياً ستعمل جاهدة للإبقاء على تلك الحاجة والإعتماد العالمي على الدولار. لكن، بوجود عملة كاليورو فالأمر قد يبدو مهدداً للمصالح الأمريكية. ولذلك لربما نجد تلك التنافسية الشديدة ما بين الدولار واليورو.. وستظل الولايات المتحدة محاربة شرسة لتنامي نفوذ اليورو الذي قد يستبدل الدولار في المعاملات التجارية العالمية يوماً ما. لكن، ماذا يعني أن يستبدل الدولار باليورو في المعاملات التجارية العالمية ؟ أي أن الطلب على الدولار سينخض بحدة.. وهذا بالتالي بدوره يعني أن الدولار سيصبح مجرد ورق لا أكثر.. لا يحمل القيمة التي تحاول الولايات المتحدة جاهدة ضمانه للعالم ! باختصار، إن سياسة النقد الأمريكية تحمل في طياتها عوامل إنهيارها تماماً كما أشار بركنز في كتابه هذا.. ولربما يكون هذا أمراً معروفاً لكل دارس للإقتصاد. ونراه جيداً في المعاملات التجارية للدول "المستقلة" التي تدفع بعملتها لا بالدولار.. ولربما تشترط أحياناً أن يكون الدفع بأي عملة أخرى عدا الدولار !

يتحدث بركنز أيضاً عن أعماله في الإكوادور وبنما والسعودية والعراق وأندونيسيا وإيران.. ثم يتحدث عن رؤيته لما حدث في فنزويلا ونيكاراغوا وغيرهما. ولربما قبل أن نعلق على الأمور فلا بد من التنبيه على أمر مهم. الحروب دوماً لها أسبابها السياسية وليس بالإمكان نسب الحروب لمزاج عدائي وهرمونات الذكورة للساسة وحسب. حيث أنه لطالما كانت الحروب لأهداف سياسية. ولا يمكن بأي حال من الأحوال الفصل بين السياسة والإقتصاد. فلكل حرب جانب من الأسباب الإقتصادية التي تحرك القيادات السياسية لإعلان الحرب. قد تكون الأمور مبهمة ويمكن تضليلها كأن نقول أن السبب المباشر للحرب العالمية الأولى هو عملية إغتيال ولي عهد النمسا. وهذا صحيح لكن بذور الحرب كانت تذرى في حقول أوروبا قبل ذلك بسنين. حتى أن الجو العام في أوروبا كان متحضراً نفسياً للحرب قبل حدوث عملية الإغتيال. وهناك قاعدة عسكرية مهمة مفادها: لا تقم بحرب لا تكسب شيئاً بانتصارك فيها. وعليه فإن الكسب الإقتصادي لطالما كان عاملاً في نشوء الحروب. وهذا أمر يمكنني جيداً تفهمه في حالة إجتياح الولايات المتحدة لبنما تلك الدولة الصغيرة التي تقع في الأرض الخلفية في البيت الأمريكي الكبير ! نعم، كانت أمريكا تحتج أنها بفعلها هذا تقوم بتقديم الرئيس البنمي "نورويجا" سيء السمعة للمحاكمة.. لكن، لا توجد أرضية قانونية لهذا الفعل تماماً كما حدث في غزو أمريكا للعراق عام 2003 اللهم كانت هنا الحجة مختلفة.. حيث كانت أسلحة الدمار الشامل الوهمية التي ألصقت بالعراق. وكلنا رأى ذلك الوهم يتبخر حين دخلت القوات الأمريكية بغداد.. ولم تجد شيئاً.

إن الذين ينفون نظرية المؤامرة لم يفهموا شيئاً من غزو بنما ولا العراق.. ويبدو أنهم لن يميزوا مؤامرة ما حتى ولو اصطدمت بجباههم ! لو فرضنا جدلاً أن لك مصلحة ما لدي.. ثم يقع حادث ما لي بشكل مناسب تماماً لمصالحك. فمن الصعب أن يصدق أحد ما يعمل بالأبحاث الجنائية أن ذلك كان فعل الصدفة.. وسيجعل منك المتهم الأول دون شك ! تلك هي بديهيات العمل الجنائي.. فالذريعة هي التي تقود للمجرم.. ومن النادر أن تخدم الصدف أهداف الآخرين هكذا دون سبب. لذا كان بديهياً ذلك الحديث عن كون الإستخبارات الأمريكية مسؤولة عن إغتيال عمر توريخوس الرئيس البنمي بتفجير طائرته.. وكان أول من ذكر ذلك هو شاهد تحدث عن ذلك في الكونجرس الأمريكي وقد ذكر الكاتب الإنجليزي غراهام غرين كلاماً مماثلاً في كتابه "لقاء مع الجنرال". لكن السؤال المهم: لمَ لم تتخذ إجراءات ما ؟ وهذا بحق سؤال مثير للإهتمام.. مماثل لسؤال لمَ قتل جاك روبي عامل في نادٍ ليلي لي هارفي أوزالد ؟ وللمناسبة، فقد تبين فيما بعد أن جاك روبي مصاب بالجنون ! يبدو ذلك مناسباً للغاية، أليس كذلك ؟

ولنكن واقعيين، إن الذين ينفون نظرية المؤامرة بمطلقها هم ببساطة لا يفقهون شيئاً لا في التاريخ ولا في السياسة ! لأنهم لو قرأوا التاريخ وفهموا السياسة حقاً لعلموا أن المؤامرات تحدث على الدوام ! وفي ذات الوقت، إن المبالغة في القول أن كل شيء ليس إلا جزءً من مؤامرة ما.. لهو فعل ناجم عن الإصابة بـ "البارانويا" دون شك !

بالطبع، تلقى الكتاب والكاتب نقداً لاذعاً ومن إقتصاديين كذلك فيقول سيباستيان مالابي الإقتصادي والكاتب في صحيفة الواشنطن بوست الأمريكية أن بركنز ليس إلا منظر آخر لنظرية المؤامرة –بالطبع- وأن قروض البنك الدولي قد حسنت بالفعل من الإقتصاد الاندونيسي وقللت من معدلات وفاة الأطفال حديثي الولادة وخفضت معدل الأمية. وأن بركنز كان يطمح بكتابه هذا للشهرة وأن يصبح الكتاب من الكتب الأكثر مبيعاً. وقد حدث ذلك بالفعل. لربما يكون سلوك وأسلوب بركنز في كتابه هذا مغرياً للإيحاء بأن شخصية بركنز تتوق لتلعب دور ريفير كما ذكرت سابقاً أو جده الأكبر توماس بين.. أو حتى السيد المسيح ذاته ! لكن ذلك لا ينفي أن بعض ما كتبه بركنز في هذا الكتاب هو حقيقي بالفعل.. والبعض الآخر مثير للإهتمام. ومن الجدير بالذكر أن السيد بركنز حاصل على شهادة في الأدب.. وقد كانت الكتابة جزءً مهماً من حياته كذلك. وقد اقترح عليه أن يكتب كتابه هذا على شكل رواية.. لكنه رفض ذلك وفضل أن تكون بشكله هذا "إعترافات" أي أنها حقائق. لكنني عن نفسي لا أستطيع أن أتعامل مع هذا الكتاب على أنه كذلك. فالكتاب لا يمكنه إثبات ��ي شيء.. عدا بعض الأقاويل من هنا وهناك والتي جمعها الكاتب من خلال حياته المهنية..

إن هذا الكتاب باختصار -ورغماً عن الكاتب- أشبه ما يكون بالرواية حقاً.. حيث تكون الحقيقة مختلطة ببعض الكذب من أجل تحقيق الغاية المتمثلة بالإقناع. وهذا الكذب المذكور ليس بالضرورة أن يكون كذباً بمعنى الكلمة، لكن قد يكون خيالاً مقصوداً أو حتى ناتج عن سوء فهم وإستنتاجات فردية خاطئة من السيد بركنز.. مما جعل من هذا الكتاب ما يشبه الرواية التي تفتقد الحبكة إلى حد كبير ويا لها من رواية في الحقيقة.

This book got 5 stars because it is highly disturbing and everyone especially Americans should read this book. Perkins writes his true story of what he did when he was an economic hit man. The basic gist is that he went to other countries promising the growth of their economy if they contracted engineers and workers from the States to install infrastructures such as electricity and running water. It looks like a great idea to the government because they are "helping" their people by creating a better economy. In the long run, the rich get richer (the very few rich of course.) and the poor get poorer (lots of poor people.) As well, the country becomes indebted to the companies that helped install the infrastructures and are at the United States' mercy. Perkins didn't work for the government but essentially did. Most people know at this point that the US government is tied so closely to big business.

There are things that Perkins did that are disgusting and totally unethical and finally his guilty conscience got to him so he wrote the book. Good thing because it is an eye opener and brings some light to one of the many reasons other countries are not to fond of the US. He gives us some tips and some things we can do to combat the mess he has made. One of the actions is stop giving big business our business. I think most people know that big businesses are pretty evil for the most part. The worst thing we can do is just sit idly by and continue living in ignorance. Worse yet, sitting idly by with the knowledge that is out there.

Read the book. Be disgusted. Erase your ignorance. Do something.

I don't know why I keep reading books like this...I only get more and more depressed about the state of the world. Perkins' story is well told and it kept me interested throughout.

Like a lot of other political books I've read of late, this one is made even more relevant by the events that have occurred even in the short time since it was published. The book tells the tale of the American led imperialism around the world leading up to the events of 9/11 and even the subsequent invasion of Iraq. The sad part is the characters have barely changed in the past 30 years -- the same few idiots have manipulated world affairs and they are still doing it. Dick Cheney foremost among them. I'll tell you this, if you have any doubts that the Bechtels and Halliburtons of the world are in charge of everything - including American foreign policy -- this book will rid you of those doubts.

One bright spot is that Perkins ends the book with some advice on how we as real Americans can change things. I'm not optimistic that we can, but at least there are some things we can do short of revolution.

Anyway, interesting that I chose to read this on the heels of 1984. Power corrupts...

Ah canim benim. Demek pisman oldun da bu kitabi yazdin. Irak, İran, Ekvadir, Panama, Endinezya..... Karismadigi ve karistirmadigi ulke kalmamis beyfendinin. Ama tum bu yillar boyunca icinde hep onu kemirip duran biseyler varmis. Yahu insanlar öluyo insanlar.

كيف تسيطر الشركات العابرات للقارات على اقتصاديات الدول ؟وكيف تنهب الشعوب وتفقر الأمم ؟ وكيف تدمر الطبيعة لإقامة المنشآت وإستثمارها مادياً؟وكيف تقتل رؤوساء دول لم يستجيبوا لخططها الإقتصادية المتعلقة ببلادهم؟
يجيبنا على هذه الأسئلة القرصان الدولي السابق جون بيركنز والذي تنقل بين عدة دول من بينها بنما والإكوادور وأندونيسيا وغيرها وكان مشاركاً وشاهداً على السيطرة على اقتصاديات هذه الدول ونهبها ،ثم يصحو ضميره كما يقول في نهاية الكتاب ليحدثنا ليس عن اغتيال شخصٍ معين بل عن اغتيالٍ لأمم وشعوب كاملة وسرقة لأجيال قادمة.

I find it kind of surprising and disappointing that so many of the reviewers here have rated the book so poorly, and more importantly that they have done so not only for purely legitimate reasons (that they think Perkins is a poor writer; I disagree, but if they think so, they ought to rate accordingly) but because they accuse him of being a "conspiracy theorist." Perkins attempts to dispel this notion at every turn:

"Some would blame our current problems on an organized conspiracy. I wish it were so simple. Members of a conspiracy can be rooted out and brought to justice. This system, however, is fueled by something far more dangerous than conspiracy. It is driven not by a small band of men but by a concept that has become accepted as gospel: the idea that all economic growth benefits humankind and that the greater the growth, the more widespread the benefits. This belief also has a corollary: that those people who excel at stoking the fires of economic growth should be exalted and rewarded, while those born at the fringes are available for exploitation."

And this is why Perkins' book is important: it explains, in terms more unwavering and far-reaching than any author I've encountered (including Chomsky) the way the world works. (This is another problem some reviewers cite: that he overstates the extent the forces he cites really affect things.) Perkins explains that the Neo-liberal economics that justify globalization bear the same relation to the way economics really work that US government propaganda bears to the real reasons they are in Iraq (reasons Perkins reveals perhaps more clearly than anyone I've read, again including Chomsky). Perkins rehearses overtly many of the reasons and methods corporations use to increase their profits. These usually include exerting their influence on the government to earn or create contracts that funnel tax money into their own pockets - for example, foreign aid, or military spending.

The aspect treated in Perkins' book is US (and not only US, of course) foreign policy as it is used to open and maintain markets in third-world countries, markets that allow corporations to strip the land of its wealth without losing profits to fairly treating the locals or worrying about the local environment. To this end, the US government and its associates in the World Bank and IMF spend billions of dollars supporting friendly dictators and ousting or destabilizing and discrediting defiant governments (in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Guatemala, Panama, Haiti, Colombia, etc).

Defiant governments of course are not always ideal themselves - though sometimes good exposes over emphasize a good guy-bad guy dynamic, it is really only about profits. As long as a foreign government lets corporations make money, they will be tolerated. No matter how brutal they are. If they try to defy the corporations, no matter whether for the end of increasing the quality of life of their citizens or for their own gain (Chavez vs. Iraq), they will be opposed, discredited, undermined, or deposed by the US government.

In Perkins' account, corporations are not evil. They merely do whatever they need to maximize profits. And of course, that rarely includes fairly compensating workers or spending millions to reduce environmental impact. It often includes lobbying the government to reduce taxes and impose protectionist policies, spend more money on weapons, look the other way on environmental offenses, forge devastating "free trade" agreements with countries with cheap labor markets, and, when necessary, invade a country to maintain access to natural resources.

Read Confessions if you are interested to understand what is really going on in the world and why, if you want to know why foreign aid doesn't seem to accomplish anything. Read it if you want to know the truth.

P.S. Confessions is particularly relevant today, as it will show you the true dynamics of Haiti's situation. The governments providing aid are by no means altruistic, and they have profits, rather than the good of the Haitian people at heart. This is why aid efforts will ultimately result in Haiti's failure to recover from the earthquake and a slide into even more abject poverty.

আমরা সবাই কমবেশী Hitman শব্দটির সাথে পরিচিত। হত্যাশিল্পী যাকে বলা হয়। কিন্তু Economic Hitman শব্দটি নতুন। এর বাংলা কোনো পারিভাষিক জানা নেই আমার। এ সম্পর্কিত কোনো কিছু জানতে চাইলে পড়তে পারেন 'Confessions of an Economic Hit Man' নামক বইটি। একটি রাষ্ট্রকে কিভাবে অর্থনীতিকভাবে পরনির্ভরশীল বানানো যায় তা সত্য এবং বাস্তব ঘটনার মাধ্যমে বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে।
লেখক নিজেই এই পেশায় জড়িত ছিলেন বলে অত্যন্ত সাবলীল ভাষায় ব্যাখ্যা দিয়েছেন।পাঠকের মধ্যে যারা conspiracy theory নিয়ে আগ্রহী তাদের জন্য এটি সোনার খনি। এটির মাধ্যমে world political control এর ব্যপারগুলোও জড়িত পাবেন। আসলে দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের পরে পৃথিবীর অধিকাংশ রাষ্ট্রই বুঝতে পারে যে যুদ্ধ পৃথিবী নিয়ন্ত্রণ করার সবচে expensive way. তখন থেকেই মূলত পশ্চিমা রাষ্ট্রগুলা এ পদ্ধতি অবলম্বন করে নিজেদেরকে নিয়ন্ত্রকের আসনে বসিয়ে নেয়। এখন তোহ চীন এ পথের অগ্রগণ্য।

كتاب مهم و يستحق القراءة

This book has a story everyone should know, even if it's not something everyone must read. It chronicles the exploitation of politically poor and oil-rich nations by economist hired by private firms working at the behest of the NSA to secure America's international sovereignty. The reality is that if these nations were organized, as OPEC was in the seventies, they could bring the first world to its knees. To prevent that from happening, economists are sent to create optimistic-biased forecasts that will lead the countries to borrow American money to pay American companies for oil-related infrastructure projects for which they will be hopelessly in debt. Americans don't like to think of ourselves as an oppressive global empire, but the reality is we all want cheap gas prices and we don't really care to know how we get them. This book explains that part. This is how the third world sees America.

John Perkins provides an insider's perspective on the world of government contractors and more specifically, the role that inflated economic growth projections plays in attracting foreign direct investment. The book is somewhat of a revelation because it is written by a long-time insider who, in spite of his considerable corporate achievements and obvious intelligence, is not an American first ideologue nor is he a trained economist. He is clearly well schooled in the University of Ambition and Greed. Throughout the book, he repeatedly documents familiar dark periods of America's involvement in the developing world: coup d'etats in Panama, Iran, Guatemala, Bolivia, and the list goes on. He accurately paints a picture of a multi-tentacled corporate and political American empire, which effectively subjugates the developing world largely through staggering debt service and contractual dependence on Western industry. The strongest section of the book is his discussion of JECOR, a sweeping redevelopment plan of Saudi Arabia conducted by a joint American Saudi committee requiring no Congressional approval - an security and diplomatic arrangement which foreshadowed numerous recent wars. The plan effectively funneled back lost petro dollars into the US economy through long term development contracts with notorious corporate villains like Bechtel, KBR and effectively, the Bin Ladin group. A very interesting book but I really tired of his constant hand wringing but ultimate justification to remain in this world in spite of the injustice of it all. His insincerity and false deprecation was a bit nauseating and sometimes laughable (the guy practically married into the Bechtel family). In spite of the sinister entrenched inequity of globalism, this former Peace Corps volunteer relentlessly leverages his power into a continued role in the "corporatocracy." Ultimately, his only act of truly giving back may have been writing this tell-all tome - and that's a pretty big move, so kudos. A good book but I tired of the apologetic, tortured hero angle.
