I learned so much about the perioud that Jane Austin lived regarding tea and certain social facts. It was valuable as a genealogist. Better understanding the time when tea had just come to be the beverage of choice in Britain. Not long before the Boston Tea Party really. A good read for anyone that wants to come away with a better understanding of something that sounds so very simple. "Having a spot of tea.".

A delightful peek into Jane Austen's life and opinions of tea. The book is filled with excerpts from her novels and period documents of the time as they related to tea. I recommend this book to any tea-enthusiast who reads Austen. Or perhaps simply anyone who reads Austen, because after reading this book it is likely they will want to drink more tea.

The book has recipes of the time for cakes, biscuits, and drinks. HOWEVER, I would not classify this book as a recipe book or cook book. It is, rather, a charming book about tea and Jane Austen and it would be impossible to have a good book about both of those subjects without providing examples for the readers to try for themselves.

Pleasant read for a stormy summer afternoon. It provides social history information about the importance of tea to life in England during the time of Jane Austen. Incorporates factual information as well as excerpts from Austen novels. Recipes were also included.

"At the center of almost every social situation in her novels one finds tea."

"In each novel, tea is used by the author as a sign of character: to know and approve of tea aligns one with civilization, and by implication with the good and the right. Those who spurn tea are backward and unenlightened."

I thought this would be a book of recipes and while it does include recipes, it was more about what tea drinking was like in Austen’s day. It’s a social history with some recipes thrown in. It was a delightful little book! And I do mean little. It’s fairly short and doesn’t go beyond tea drinking but it was just the right amount for getting a good idea of the customs surrounding tea in the time period without being overwhelmed by the details or broader scope. It was really delightful.

I have to call this book 'cute' or 'sweet' as in 'a delightful little read.' I picked it up following my marathon of Jane Austen novels. It is a short, charming history of tea, tea time, tea rituals, tea snacks, and the importance and settings of taking tea in both Jane Austen's life, the Regency era, and in her novels.

It's a fast read. It shed a lot of light on passages from her stories that will enhance my rereading of the novels some day. I recommend this book if you like tea and tea parties, Jane Austen, or history especially about foods.

This book was a lovely gift from my sister for Christmas. She bought it new but it was signed by the author! It was a look at all the different places and times of day that tea was consumed and where you can see it in Jane Austen’s books. Recipes were included at the end of each chapter. Now I’m onto reading Kim Wilson’s garden with Jane Austen book.

It was okay. I'm on an "Afternoon Tea" kick and I was expecting more romanticism with colorful descriptions, ideas for table settings, and tasty recipes. It wasn't that at all. It was more of a description of Jane Austen's daily life and how tea might possibly be involved. There are only a few recipes and they don't sound very appetizing. Interesting look into Jane Austen's daily activities though.

It's fair to note this book is much more afternoon tea, than dinner, but afternoon tea can be a delight and this book, leavened as it is with letters and quotes from Jane, is a light and pleasant read.
There's some nice social history included, as well as some period recipes with their modern equivalents. Perhaps the next best thing to actually having tea with Jane!

I love tea, I love Janet Austen, and I love history. I knew as soon as Goodreads recommended this to me that I'd love it. It did not disappoint.
Full of interesting facts about Austen's life and works and the regency period's love of tea. I'm no cook, and baking is not something I enjoy, but I loved the fact that there are a few recipes for regency period foods at the end of each chapter. For those who enjoy cookery I'm sure this will add to the enjoyment of the book also.
The book is full of beautiful illustrations which for me made this book an item to be treasured, and each page a pleasure to read. I actually wish this this book were longer.

Tea and Regency wrapped in one.
The book is divided into chapters dedicated to the times of day, when Regency people took their tea. In parallel, the author tells about habits of Jane Austen - how she drank her tea, how she spent her day, what teaware she bought. There are quotes from her novels and her letters, as well as some facts of her life. In addition, at the end of every chapter there are, surprisingly, accessible recipes from Regency era.
A nice mix.
