The beginning was very entertaining. Soooo many loose ends to tie up at the end. It felt like she was making the case for at least three more books, but this is a standalone.
I felt that this book dragged on forever and then the author rushed to wrap everything up in 5 pages. It also seemed that there were two plots going on, one with Mary Lisa and her stalker, and the other with her mother and the Hildebrands and none of it seemed connected. I liked the story line with the 3 women characters and wished the author had focused more on their interaction with one another.
Meh. I finished this yesterday, but today I couldn't even remember what book I had just read. That's how forgettable it is. It's well written, it's just the plot that's lacking. I really didn't care about anything as it happened.
Story of Mary Lisa, Oregon girl who becomes a famous soap opera star. She is being stalked in Malibu, which is the first mystery. Two murders and a suicide in her hometown of Goddard Bay, Oregon contribute further mysteries. Dysfunctional family, handsome cops. The story became a little disjointed jumping from the soap opera to real life.
I like most of Coulter's books. But I especially liked this one! Mary Lisa is the star of a soap, called Born to Be Wild, and she is being stalked. After she has a near fatal accident, she goes home to a dysfunctional family, an ex-finance who married her sister, and a bad-a--- cop who once through her in jail. From there, things change dramatically for her.
I really liked the beginning of the book but by the end, wondered how many more twists and for how much longer the story could be stretched out...Mary Lisa is a soap opera star with a complicated family history and an even more complicated TV role. She's a sweet character and real, but often has these temper flares where she is anything but pretty. The mystery comes in when someone tries to kill her--repeatedly.
Favorite quote: Her father hugged her close. "I gave up long ago trying to figure out what life is," he said, "I just try to live it."
Everyone recommends Catherine Coulter as a good writer so I'm hoping this was just an unlucky introduction to her writing. Born to be Wild was boring and I'm still not sure what the purpose of the murders back in her home town had to do with the story. There were too many unresolved issues within the story. I agree with one previous reviewer: I finished this story feeling very little interest in the main characters.
I hope the next Coulter novel I try is better, but I think it might be a little while before I give her another chance.
So it is fun to read a "Beach" book. This one is part romance and part detective and part family and centers around Mary Lisa who is a daytime Soap star whose life is threatened by an unknown person. Mary Lisa is fun and lovable with lots of friends who hang out around her. This in spite of the fact that her character on the Soap is a nasty scheming woman who is "Born to be Wild". The love interest is her home town police chief from Oregon. She paid a visit to her family and met him again--the first time was 3 years before when he put her in jail for a misdemeanor.
This was a fun and entertaining story about a soap star who is being stalked and threatened. When her old nemesis, and hot hometown chief of police, volunteers to assist in the investigation, things begin to heat up between the two of them. It was a fun and quick summer read to enjoy by the pool.
Cute, Cute, Cute. One of Catherine Coulters better books that I have read so far. A good mystery/crime book that had me second guessing my predictions throughout. In addition to being a good mystery book, Coulter did a great job with the character portrayal. I was very invested in the characters and did not mind that the character portion of the plot was more predictable.
Wish this was part of a series - or that all her books were this good!!!!
