took me way longer than expected to finish this. the language/writing is VERY dense, and there are tons of VERY long paragraphs where the narrators gives us a glimpse of either el nene's or dorda's past and inner mind workings (they are both in love with each other and severely struggle with internalized homophobia). these instances are written in a stream of consciousness fashion and cannot be rushed through, as i naively tried to do. you have to take your time with this book and really take in and appreciate the GORGEOUS prose! there's several instances where tom wait's song "mr. siegal" is mentioned, and i would recommend reading this novel while listening to said song on repeat, it will give you a sensorial experience like no other. there's a film adaptation of the novel that i haven't seen, but it stars young, tanned and athletic versions of leonardo sberaglia and eduardo noriega as el nene and dorda, making them a delicious couple to gush over with starry eyes.

No sabía muy bien cuántas estrellas ponerle al libro. Finalmente me decanté por 3 porque, aunque la historia está muy bien, algunas partes se me volvieron algo chiclosas. De todas maneras, al ser una historia verídica, Piglia la desarma y la arma(verídicamente) con sus elementos. Es la primera novela que leo del autor. Seguro en un futuro seguiré indagando en su obra.

Por algún motivo que no logro identificar, no suelo leer autores argentinos. Y cuando me encuentro con autores como Ricardo Piglia es cuando confirmo que no aprovecharlos es un error. Argentina es tierra de grandes autores, y hay que prestarles más atención.

Plata Quemada es un clásico moderno, que relata la historia de un grupo de ladrones que ejecutan un robo millonario a un banco en las afueras de Buenos Aires. Lo que lo separa del resto, primero, es la manera en que está escrito, que es exactamente la manera en que te lo contaría un amigo en un asado: no es lineal, tiene interrupciones constantes, abunda en descripciones, pero siempre con un ritmo veloz, ejecutivo, que mantiene la intriga.

Leerlo es como ver una película de acción, con una historia inteligente, buenos personajes e inolvidables escenas.

Si tienen la oportunidad, no dejen de leerlo.

First of all Money to Burn is out of print so I ordered my copy through the ever reliable abebooks.com , however if you do decide to invest in this novel there are many shortcomings.

As such the idea is great. A stream of conscious book based on an epic bank robbery that took place in 60’s Argentina. Within the book there are first hand accounts from journalists and psychiatrists on the robbery and the super dysfunctional gang who planned out this escapade. We also get a fragmented view on the robbery and its chilling aftermath.

Unfortunately the translation is beyond terrible. Instead of keeping with the book’s vernacular we are subjected to a lot of British slang. Honestly I find it weird to hear a South American gangster use the words ‘Bollocks’ and ‘Dosh’ Personally I prefer it if the original word is used and then a footnote or glossary works out as a guide. To be fair there are some useful footnotes providing historical background but others that offer a scant explanations of the puns which don’t provide that much help in enjoying the book.

Después de terminarlo, y dejando unos días de reposo, no me quedó claro si me gusta o no... lo que me temo que no es una gran valoración para un libro, el ni fu ni fa creo que es la peor crítica que se puede hacer...

Qué me gustó: el estilo ágil, saltando de un lado a otro, del presente al pasado, de un personaje a otro. El retrato de los personajes, con sus sombras, sus justificaciones, su humanidad... tirando a de lo peor. La historia en sí, cómo está planteada y cómo se desarrolla

Qué no me gustó: la confusión que a veces se genera en los saltos (que sí me gustaron). Cierto tremendismo en las historias personales. Que la historia no llega a atrapar, no conmueve, me da igual lo que le pase a todo el mundo...

La ventaja es que es un libro cortito, aunque hubo partes que a mi se me hicieron larguísimas...

Muy al estilo de Capote en su novela de "No ficción" de A Sangre Fría. No obstante, aquí hay menos cuchara de Piglia e intentó hacer el libro lo más fidedigno posible respecto al infame tiroteo. Se nota a leguas cuál fue el personaje que más pudo estudiar y te deja con ganas de más, pero prefirió mantenerse más a la raya de los hechos y eso es algo increíblemente digno. Amargo y lleno de energía como un mate grande sin palo.

"Siempre había sido objeto de interés para los médicos, los psiquiatras: El criminal nato, el hombre que se ha desgraciado de chico, muere en su ley. Era un destino al que no podía escapar..."

¡Qué manera de narrar! Un suceso real y la gran tentación de hacer casi un reporte policíaco, pero Piglia nos presenta una narración magistral, con personajes riquísimos, llenos de matices que los llevan de la maldad más patológica a la ternura más conmovedora. Se lee rápido, emociona. Muy recomendable.
