Coelho's books fall into a predictable pattern; a plot based somewhat on the author's own experiences growing up in 1960s Brazil, an uplifting message about "following your own star," "listening to your heart," "living life to the fullest," and other inspirational-poster-platitudes, not to mention a tacked-on romance where True Love conquers all, kind of like if Hallmark started producing New Age self-help books. This one is based on Coelho's time as an institutionalized rebellious youth mashed up with the themes "suicide is wrong" and "madness is just people wanting to live life differently." How this book got into the Boxall 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die is a complete mystery.
