Leadership

The minutes and hours following 11th September terror attacks on the World Trade Center posed the greatest challenge to governance in New York City's history. Mayor Rudoph Guiliani had barely escaped with his life in the collapse of the first tower. Fires burned furiously near the site as the other buildings verged on collapse. Air Force fighter jets criss-crossed the sky to ward off other attacks. And yet in those moments after the calamity, and in the following days and months, Mayor Guiliani not only steered the city through the crisis, but did so with an assurance and authority that was hailed around the world as a model of courageous leadership. In this book, Guiliani describes vividly the chaos and horror of the twin-towers catastrophe, and explains how the rules of management he enforced as Mayor enabled him to gain control of the emergency. These are also the rules, Guiliani makes clear, that anyone in a leadership position - from the head of a large corporation to the owner of a corner shop - can use to inspire others and achieve concrete results.

Update 20/1/24 - I read this book more than 10 years ago and I’ve learned a good deal about Giuliani since, none of it good. But I stand by what I wrote after I’d read it, back in the day (below)
———————————————————-

The first section of the book - the part that deals with 9/11 and it's aftermath - is compelling and inspiring. the sections that follow...well, less so. this book starts off with a fantastic story but then becomes a preening 'how good am I' list of activities you can pick up from just about any book on leadership. My advice: stop after the 9/11 section - but do read this.

Regardless of what you think of Giuliani’s politics, it is undeniable that his leadership helped guide New York and even America through one of the darkest times in our history. This book details the leadership principles that led him to becoming the mayor of NYC and ultimately helped him get a city through one of the worst crises imaginable. Highly recommend.

I read this book when it came out in 2005. His tenets of leadership qualities were universal. I still remember them . I did heartily disagree with his view of unions.

Hard to think the 2021 person is the same man.

The leadership book spoke of relentless preparedness, surrounding yourself with those that fill in your gaps of knowledge , positive assertions, gathering diverse opinions, and taking criticism and blame.

What gives with his sycophantic relationship with the President!!!

If this book was only 60 pages long, it would be fantastic. The first 60 pages contain Rudulph Giuliani's personal first hand account of the events of 911, and his personal efforts trying to coordinate and oversee the initial response and rescue effort. This section of the book is very interesting, it provides a whole new level of understanding of what those who were at ground zero were experiencing. The rest of the book is Giuliani's personal philosphy on leadership, I thought it was somewhat boreing.
