There is no indication on this book that it is part 2 of a new trilogy. If you randomly pick it from a bookshop shelf, it takes a bit of getting used to as it presents a whole new set of characters rather than what you might expect.

You are immediately thrown into the deep end as you try to figure out who is who and what is happening. It can be quite challenging at first.

However, once you get past that initial confusion, this is a good story with a lot going on. More rifts are opening up on Midkemia, and Pug and his friends and family must determine what threat might be approaching them this time.

The characters are well-written, and the places they have to visit are all unique. Each character has their own distinct personality and role in the story.

By the end of the book, not much is really achieved in terms of resolving the main conflict. Instead, everyone is simply in their places, setting the stage for the finale. But despite this, the story still manages to engage and keep you interested, leaving you eager to see what will happen next in the trilogy.

This is the first book by the master fantasy writer Raymond E. Feist that I would say is a bit lacking.

Certainly, the characters are all as strong as Feist's trademark. However, the story is mostly about setting up the situation and doesn't really progress much until the last few chapters.

The story centers around our main characters being separated. Pug and his group are preparing to undertake their mission to the Dasati home world, while the boys start school and then enter military service in anticipation of the upcoming conflict.

And for the most part, that's all there is. Three-fourths of the book is just setting up, with very little action or drama. We do get to know some of the Dasati characters and become somewhat familiar with their world, but again, it's all for what's to come and it's not as engaging as the first book in this particular series, which was almost a standalone adventure.

I did like the book, and now that things are set up, there's a lot to look forward to in the third book of this series. But this installment definitely suffers from the middle of the trilogy syndrome.

I love Feist and have complete faith that the next book will return to form. He sets a high standard for his work, so expectations are always high. And even if this book was below his usual standard, it was still a worthy and fairly entertaining read.

4.5 stars. I am really enjoying learning more about the Dasati. The Dasati are an extremely fascinating and unique group. Their culture, traditions, and way of life are full of mysteries and wonders. As I delve deeper into their world, I am constantly amazed by the complexity and richness of their history. Every new piece of information I discover makes me more eager to learn even more. It's like uncovering a hidden treasure trove with each passing moment. The Dasati have so much to offer in terms of knowledge and understanding, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to explore and learn about them. I look forward to continuing this journey of discovery and sharing what I have learned with others.

This one is striving so extremely hard to be more epic than what is considered epic that it somewhat gets detached.

There is an overwhelming amount of things happening, to the extent that it is literally just a catalogue of events.

What is lacking here are those few slow burn moments that would allow Feist to demonstrate what he is capable of in terms of characterisation.

Regrettably, there are none in this particular piece.

It seems that in the attempt to create something grand and epic, the focus on developing the characters in a more nuanced and detailed way has been overlooked.

Without those crucial characterisation moments, the story may feel a bit flat and one-dimensional, despite the abundance of events.

Perhaps in future iterations, more attention could be given to these aspects to truly make the work more engaging and memorable.

I thought this was a rather decent follow-up to the first book in the Darkwar Saga.

It continued the story in a somewhat engaging manner. However, it has to be said that the pacing was still a bit slow at times.

There were moments when I felt like the plot was dragging and could have been more tightly wound.

Nevertheless, there is at least one great surprise in the end that I found pretty interesting though.

It was a twist that I didn't see coming and it added an extra layer of excitement to the story.

Overall, while it had its flaws, it was still an enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to seeing where the saga goes from here.

I would rate it a 3.5 out of 5.

The book without a head and a tail. There is no beginning and no end. This is a book that pushes the plot forward and explains to us various new things. It introduces us to new characters while giving new roles to the old ones.

It continues from the previous one and calls for a sequel. Also, in it, we can see the strong influence of Dino Frenk Herbert. Fajst writes to us about his Kwisatz Haderach.

I give it five stars just because of the importance of the plot to the whole serial globally.

Simply, I have to rate it like this, taking the whole into account. Otherwise, it would be a solid four.

This book is a unique piece that keeps the readers engaged from start to finish. The lack of a traditional beginning and end adds an element of mystery and intrigue, making it stand out from other books in the series. The way the author develops the characters and the plot is truly remarkable. It not only builds on the previous installments but also introduces new and exciting elements that keep the story fresh and engaging. The influence of Dino Frenk Herbert is evident throughout the book, adding a touch of depth and complexity to the narrative. Overall, this is a must-read for fans of the series and anyone who enjoys a good science fiction story.

3 1/2 star.

Feist truly does an outstanding job when it comes to creating diverse worlds and unique societies, just as he has accomplished here. However, my one concern lies with the portrayal of Dasati. It was supposed to be a place filled to the brim with evil and chaos. But yet, there are cities, crops being grown, and sophisticated machines, all of which imply a certain degree of order.

I had rather expected to see roaming hordes of barbarians, mindlessly killing everything in their path, instead of what is actually presented. After all, while evil can be organized, chaos by its very nature cannot. And the connection between the two as depicted here just doesn't quite make sense to me.

On a positive note, Feist also does an excellent job in creating characters. He particularly excels at portraying young men who are on a certain path until someone takes an interest in them, molds them, and reaps the benefits. These characters are distinct and truly a pleasure to read.

Overall, this is yet another epic fantasy addition to one of the best created universes out there.

Overall, it was a good read!

I felt that it was a little slower-paced than the first book. However, I guess that can be expected as it is the middle of a series. The story might be taking its time to build up and develop the characters and plot further.

Nonetheless, I do think that book three is shaping up to be a great one! There are still many mysteries and storylines that have been left unresolved, and I'm eager to see how they will be addressed in the next installment.

I can't believe how many of these books I've read in this world. It's like I've become completely immersed in it. And now, I'm already on to the next one, excited to continue my journey and see what new adventures await me.

As Feist's Riftwar books progress,

the series increasingly succumbs to the same issue as Dragonball Z. That is,

there is an ever-expanding chasm in power level between the top-tier characters and the more ordinary individuals.

This implies that an increasing amount of what the ordinary characters do becomes meaningless busywork.

At best, it serves to provide the powerful ones with an opportunity to showcase their abilities.

This volume is severely afflicted by this syndrome.

This is just kind of a plodding second book of a trilogy.

It's not terrible by any means, but it is fairly boring.

The story seems to just sort of drag along at a sluggish pace.

There's not a whole lot of excitement or action to keep the reader engaged.

However, one can only hope that this is all part of a master plan to set up a more lively and thrilling concluding book.

Perhaps the author is laying the groundwork for something truly spectacular in the final installment.

Only time will tell if this plodding second book was worth the read in the end.

Until then, readers will have to wait and see what the conclusion has in store.

Hopefully, it will be enough to make up for the somewhat lackluster experience of this second book.

Magician was my very first foray into the world of paranormal fantasy.

The moment I started reading, I was completely smitten. It was like a magical spell had been cast upon me, and from that point on, my love for this series knew no bounds. I own every single book in this remarkable series, and although the pages have turned yellow with age, it doesn't deter me in the slightest. In fact, I find myself constantly rereading them, as if they hold some sort of secret power that keeps drawing me back.

Raymond E Feist is truly an author in a league of his own. His ability to create vivid and enchanting worlds, filled with complex and captivating characters, is nothing short of extraordinary.

Do yourself a huge favor and immerse yourself in this series right now. You will quickly fall in love with Pug and follow his remarkable journey through life with bated breath. And that's not all - the spin-off books are equally enthralling, introducing you to a whole new cast of characters that will steal your heart.

Trust me, once you start reading this series, you won't be able to put it down.
