I read this children's illustrated series several years ago.

As I delved into the pages, my inner child was instantly delighted.

The concept of cats with wings was simply magical.

Here were cats that could not only fly but actually did!

It was the brilliant creation of Ursula K. Le Guin.

There was truly nothing not to like about this series.

The vivid illustrations brought the flying cats to life, and the stories were filled with adventure and charm.

It was a world that I could easily get lost in, and it made me believe in the impossible.

Even years later, the memory of those flying cats still brings a smile to my face and a sense of wonder to my heart.

Hello, friends!

Let's have a detailed discussion about Catwings.

First of all, I had never heard of Catwings until my beloved introduced them to me by handing me the second book in the series. It was yet another one of the many wonderful gifts she has given me. At any rate, they seem to be some of LeGuin's more obscure works, which I think is a bit of a tragedy. Second, just recently when I was shelving in the children's section, I happened to find all four of the Catwings books just sitting there. It seemed like a sign to me. So, as one does, I took them home and we passed them around the house.

Catwings and its sequels are little short books, each consisting of forty to fifty pages. They are about four (later five) cats who are siblings and have wings. That's really the central concept of the whole series, and it's frankly adorable. I think the illustrations truly make the books. They wouldn't be half as interesting if they didn't have such well-done and adorable drawings. They are kind of like Ursula Vernon's works in that way, in that the illustrations are necessary to the book. However, in Vernon's work, they tend to be integral to the story in a way that the Catwings books aren't.

The first book follows our four siblings, Thelma, Roger, James, and Harriet. They were born in the city and mysteriously possess wings. Their mother, Mrs. Jane Tabby, realizes how dangerous it is for them in the city and urges them to fly away and find a safe place to live where people won't try to catch them and use them as sideshow displays or exhibits. Unfortunately, our four kittens discover that country life can be just as dangerous as city life. The adjustment is difficult but worthwhile. And of course, in the end, they befriend two human siblings who make everything considerably easier. If this book has a flaw, it's that it seems to end very abruptly.

So, yes, these are sweet, short books that are great for early readers and for people who just like cats. I would definitely recommend them again.

This was so cute yet full of symbolism and social critique!

Gosh, I love fairy tales so much. Fairy tales have a unique charm that can captivate our hearts and minds. They often present simple and innocent stories on the surface, but beneath that lies a deeper layer of meaning and social commentary.

In this particular fairy tale, the cuteness factor is undeniable. The characters and their adventures are endearing and engaging, making it a joy to read. However, upon closer inspection, one can see the symbolism and social critique embedded within the story.

The author may be using the fairy tale as a vehicle to address various social issues, such as inequality, discrimination, or the importance of kindness and compassion. It makes us think about the world around us and encourages us to strive for a better society.

Overall, this fairy tale is a wonderful example of how a simple story can have a profound impact. It combines cuteness with depth, making it a truly memorable and thought-provoking read.

Remember seeing this book as a kid and thinking it looked really weird.

Well, it truly was weird! However, it was also funny in a rather unique way, had a bit of a scary undertone, and yet was sweet at the same time.

I decided to read it aloud to my nieces, who are 6 and 8 years old. They absolutely loved it.

Now, I suspect that their enjoyment might have a little less to do with the actual quality of the book and a little more to do with the fact that they are total cat obsessed gremlins.

They were completely engrossed in the story, their eyes wide with excitement as they followed along.

It was quite a sight to see them so into it, and it made me realize that sometimes, the simplest of things can bring the greatest joy to children.

Even if the book had its oddities, it managed to capture their imaginations and hold their attention, which is really what matters in the end.

I truly adored this charming and sweet little tale about cats that had wings!

It was such a delight to read. I couldn't wait to share it with my 1st/2nd grade students.

When I read it to them, their eyes widened with excitement and wonder.

They were completely captivated by the idea of cats being able to fly.

The story brought a smile to their faces and sparked their imaginations.

They asked so many questions about the winged cats, like where they came from and what adventures they had.

It was wonderful to see them engage with the story in such a lively way.

I think this tale will stay with them for a long time and continue to inspire their love for reading and storytelling.

I'm so glad I found this wonderful little gem of a story to share with my students.
