I was truly stupid to assume that Death Note wouldn't hold any interest after 'L' passed away in Volume 7. I took a break from reading it and only resumed a couple of months after Gorab began reading. Tugami Ohba has not only made Volume 8 interesting, but it has also delved deeper into a darker territory. Killing 'L' turned out to be a bad move for Light because now, instead of one problem, he has two in the forms of Near (N) and Mellow. N closely resembles L, while Mellow is one step ahead of them all, effectively putting Kira in shackles. Surprisingly, the introduction of the new Shinigami - Sidoh - changes the game completely. Sadly, with each passing volume, Light is becoming increasingly evil and hateful. He didn't even flinch when his father's and sister's lives were in danger. It seems that the Death Note indeed has the power to alter one's mind. Another amazing volume!! I absolutely loved it.
It just isn't the same without L! Maybe it will pick up though! This one is, for the most part, pretty slow paced. There is just so much dialogue and thinking that it can even be hard to follow. Mello and Near are both good characters, but the tension that once existed between Light and L is no longer present. Misa now seems like a total joke, and the whole plot appears to be getting more and more convoluted. I bet that in the end, it'll all unravel itself nicely. However, for now, it feels like it has gone a little downhill. It's as if the story has lost some of its sparkle and excitement. The absence of L is really felt, and it's hard to imagine how it will manage to recapture the magic that was there in the earlier parts. But perhaps there are still some surprises in store that will turn things around and make it an engaging and thrilling read once again.
