Yumi Hotta (堀田 由美 Hotta Yumi, most often written as ほった ゆみ) is a Japanese mangaka, best known as the author of the best-selling manga and anime series Hikaru no Go, about the game of go that is widely credited for the recent boom of the game in Japan. The idea behind Hikaru no Go began when Yumi Hotta played a pick-up game of go with her father-in-law. She thought that it might be fun to create a manga based on this traditional board game, and began the work under the title of Nine Stars (九つの星 Kokonotsu no Hoshi), named for the nine "star points" on a go board. She later worked with Takeshi Obata (the illustrator) and Yukari Umezawa (5-Dan, the supervisor) in the creation of Hikaru no Go. She won the 2000 Shogakukan Manga Award and the 2003 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for Hikaru no Go.

I have to say this installment was truly the turning point for Hikaru's character. He has finally discovered a goal that means everything to him, and he is determined to do just about anything to achieve it. It has been really fascinating to observe how his character has developed and changed. The way the characters are written in this story is simply outstanding. They are so vivid and realistic that I have been completely engrossed in the narrative. I find myself constantly on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating what will happen next. I really can't wait to read more and see how Hikaru's journey unfolds.

Probably the first volume where I actually liked Hikaru. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that my feelings towards this character had changed. Before, I might have had some reservations or simply not paid much attention. But in this volume, something clicked. Maybe it was the way the story was developed, or perhaps it was Hikaru's actions and decisions that finally won me over. There was a new depth to his character that I hadn't seen before. His struggles and growth became more apparent, and I found myself empathizing with him on a whole new level. I was eager to see what would happen to him next, and how his story would continue to unfold. It's amazing how a single volume can have such a significant impact on my perception of a character. Hikaru's foray into Internet play has not only caught the attention of people worldwide but has now led to a climactic rematch between him and Akira. What makes this situation even more intriguing is that Akira is unaware that his opponent is Hikaru.

The first part of the tankobon delves into Akira Toya's online match with Sai. Toya is so captivated by the online persona Sai that he skips the first day of his Professional Exam to engage in a game with him. As he plays, Toya reflects on Shindo and notices the similarities in their playstyles. However, he quickly dismisses the thought, finding it difficult to reconcile Shindo with two distinct strengths. But when he discovers that Shindo is at an Internet Café, he hurries over to confront him.

From the confrontation, Shindo reveals to Toya that he is not Sai and warns him that if he is too preoccupied with chasing his shadow, he will one day be surpassed. Shindo also realizes that the entire world is eager to know the identity of Sai and decides to stop playing Internet Go to avoid further commotion. With limited options, Shindo makes the decision to play as Sai, much to the delight of the Go-loving ghost.

The second part of the tankobon centers on Shindo's preparations for becoming an insei - a Go student dedicated to achieving professional status.
