Yumi Hotta (堀田 由美 Hotta Yumi, most often written as ほった ゆみ) is a Japanese mangaka, best known as the author of the best-selling manga and anime series Hikaru no Go, about the game of go that is widely credited for the recent boom of the game in Japan. The idea behind Hikaru no Go began when Yumi Hotta played a pick-up game of go with her father-in-law. She thought that it might be fun to create a manga based on this traditional board game, and began the work under the title of Nine Stars (九つの星 Kokonotsu no Hoshi), named for the nine "star points" on a go board. She later worked with Takeshi Obata (the illustrator) and Yukari Umezawa (5-Dan, the supervisor) in the creation of Hikaru no Go. She won the 2000 Shogakukan Manga Award and the 2003 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for Hikaru no Go.

The path of Hikaru is not always a straight one. However, that makes it interesting.

Anime-manga match-up:

Episode 29 corresponds to volume 8 up to page 27 (Game 61).

Episode 30 covers volume 8 pages 30 - 71 (Games 62 - 63).

Episode 31 includes volume 8 pages 73 - 123 (Games 64 - 66.5).

Great Volume!

This was yet another remarkable volume. In comparing the manga to the anime version, I noticed only one disparity. In this manga, Tsubaki, the bearded individual, was affectionately nicknamed "Godzilla". However, in the anime version that I watched by Funimation, he was referred to as "Gorilla man". This volume centered around the 4-day pro preliminary games. In these games, each player had to win 3 out of 5 games in order to progress to the Pro matches, which would take place in a month's time. Subsequently, only the top 3 Insei at the conclusion of the pro games would ascend to the rank of a professional. I have awarded this volume a resounding 5 stars and I am eagerly anticipating reading Volume 9 in the very near future.
