This was yet another remarkable volume. In comparing the manga to the anime version, I noticed only one disparity. In this manga, Tsubaki, the bearded individual, was affectionately nicknamed "Godzilla". However, in the anime version that I watched by Funimation, he was referred to as "Gorilla man". This volume centered around the 4-day pro preliminary games. In these games, each player had to win 3 out of 5 games in order to progress to the Pro matches, which would take place in a month's time. Subsequently, only the top 3 Insei at the conclusion of the pro games would ascend to the rank of a professional. I have awarded this volume a resounding 5 stars and I am eagerly anticipating reading Volume 9 in the very near future.

This story is like comfort food for me.

I really can't quite put my finger on exactly what it is that keeps me constantly rereading or rewatching both this and the anime.

However, my interest in Go definitely plays a significant role.

It's truly fascinating to see the strategies and skills involved in the game.

Another solid volume

Takeshi Obata's art work is always fantastic. As I've seen across the multiple series I've read that he's worked on, this volume is also an intriguing one. The comic is a battle manga of sorts, with its "battles" taking place on the Go board. The creative team makes great use of the drama of sports/games here. It also remains realistic, showing Hikaru's continued relative youth and inexperience.

Hikaru enters the Pro-Test preliminaries as he continues to chase Akira. He barely manages to get through because he is thrown off by an adult whose mind games intimidate him. The fact that Hikaru just about gets by when he shouldn't/almost shouldn't is starting to become a bit of a cliché in the series. However, it has been handled well enough to be believable so far. But it will likely become patterned enough to be annoying soon. That's why I gave it a four instead of a five rating. Hikaru's youth has a particular effect in this series of games, and thankfully, the drama is kept within reasonable bounds.

Once again, I continue to anticipate that this series will decline as it progresses, but I keep being pleasantly surprised by the ways in which it instead starts to expand. The manner in which we begin to see the adults more as individuals truly helps to strengthen the all-ages label that I have been assigning to this work. It is not particularly common, and I truly applaud the way in which this series can appeal to people of all ages.
