**Book: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Volume 1**

Writer: CLAMP

Pages: 197

Score: 4/5 ⭐

Since childhood, I have followed a large part of the CLAMP universe, so Tsubasa was one of my greatest pending works. What I really liked about this first volume was the fact of finding so many significant characters again and the way the authors combined and adapted them to create this new story that brings us Sakura and Shaoran as protagonists. The story in general revolves around the dispersion of Sakura's memories in different worlds, and how Shaoran will try to the impossible to recover them, even if for that he has to give up his most precious position. The art in this volume is also very beautiful, with detailed illustrations that bring the characters and the different worlds to life. The plot is engaging and full of mystery, making it impossible to put the book down once you start reading. Overall, I really enjoyed this first volume of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Review for complete series

Tsubasa is, in a sense, a love letter to all of CLAMP's other works. I delved into this having read nearly all - definitely all the relevant - series by CLAMP. So, I can't be entirely certain, but I suspect this series would only be half as enjoyable if one hasn't read the other works, preferably all of them. If you relish Easter Eggs and cameos, Tsubasa is an absolute delight.

For a long time, Tsubasa was the longest manga series I possessed. Anything beyond 10 volumes makes me hesitate as I find that most lengthy series tend to drag needlessly. However, it was impossible for me to reject Tsubasa. Sakura and Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura have been long-time favorite manga characters of mine. Not to mention, I am generally very fond of CLAMP and all their big and small crossovers. Reading a story that combines almost their entire bibliography and features Sakura and Syaoran as the main characters was just too good to pass up. It should also be noted that this series is closely intertwined with xxxHolic's plot and is best read in conjunction with it.

This Syaoran and Sakura are not the same as those from Cardcaptor Sakura (although the original Sakura makes a cameo). Essentially, this is a story about traveling between dimensions. The same person can exist in different versions of themselves in different universes. Sakura and Syaoran journey between the various worlds - all very distinct - and encounter characters and elements from across CLAMP's other works. In fact, some characters appear more than once to emphasize how the same being can exist and lead a different life in different worlds. It's truly fascinating to see the characters from other stories living different lives, some humorous and some bittersweet. CLAMP has killed off a significant number of its characters in other works, so it's nice to see some of them leading happier and more peaceful lives.

In addition to meeting a plethora of familiar characters, there are also a couple of Tsubasa original characters such as Fay and Kurogane, who accompany Sakura and Syaoran on their travels. I've grown to love Fay and Kurogane almost as much as I do the other two. So, while Tsubasa is very much a homage to other CLAMP works, it's also a character-driven story with both Fay and Kurogane having complex and profound personalities. I must also offer my apologies to Kurogane. I initially expected not to like him because I'm not overly fond of brawns-over-brains type of characters, but I was completely wrong about him. He's a great character, smart as well as strong, and just a really wonderful guy.

Being a work of CLAMP, it almost goes without saying that the art is beautiful. That being said, this is more of a shounen-esque series, which is also evident in the art with its somewhat oddly proportioned limbs and a greater emphasis on action, weapons, and muscles. I prefer shoujo art, but the facial art is much the same as in other CLAMP works, so I can definitely live with that.

A drawback of Tsubasa is simply that it can get confusing. There are time skips, world switching, doubles across different series (xxxHolic), and rather ambiguous motivations from the villain's side. At a certain point, I just decided to go with the flow rather than attempting to make sense of every detail. There's a bit of a loose end, though I wouldn't exactly call it a bad ending either. Now that they are working on a sequel, it'll be interesting to see where things will lead next.

Either way, it's an absolute gem if you like CLAMP and crossovers, and Sakura, Syaoran, Fay, and Kurogane are just a great team of characters. To be fair, Mokona is just as much a part of the team and deserves a mention too. Finally, I just adore these characters.

This experience truly took me back to my middle school days.

During those times, I would spend the entire day sitting and engrossed in reading manga.

The vivid illustrations and captivating storylines would transport me to different worlds and keep me entertained for hours on end.

Even after all these years have passed, manga remains a favorite of mine.

It has a special charm that never fades.

The characters and their adventures continue to resonate with me, and I still find myself getting lost in the pages of a good manga.

Whether it's the action-packed shonen manga or the more heartwarming and slice-of-life ones, each has its own unique appeal.

Manga has been a constant source of joy and inspiration for me throughout the years, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

*This is a review of all Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE volumes*

I have an absolute passion for Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE. The concept of skipping through various and diverse worlds is truly captivating. It's like embarking on an endless adventure. Witnessing the CLAMP characters living out different stories in each world is a delight. My favorite aspect, without a doubt, is observing the growth of the characters. Among them, Kurogane and Fai hold a special place in my heart as they are my absolute favorites. Their relationship is complex, yet so endearing. It evolves and deepens throughout the series, and I find myself constantly invested in their journey. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this amazing read to all CLAMP fans. It's a masterpiece that will surely leave you spellbound and longing for more.

This is a review for the whole series.

I began reading this series during my pre-teen years. The initial 7 volumes or so led me to believe that it would be a delightful fantasy-adventure tale filled with silly characters. However, as the story progressed, things took a dark and edgy turn.

(Mild spoilers ahead.)

Although the target audience for this manga is clearly young adults, it was one of the formative fantasy stories I encountered as a younger teenager. From the very start, it boasted lovable characters, stunning art, and unique, imaginative story arcs as the main quartet traversed from world to world, gathering Sakura's memories in the form of feathers. Subsequently, the tone gradually shifted from lighthearted to something darker. Characters endured pain, story arcs ranged from sad to tragic, and there were genuine stakes involved. The plot developed into one of the most intricate I have ever witnessed, with each character's backstory and motivations skillfully intertwined.

CLAMP, a group of female artists, possess a unique understanding of how to stage drama and elicit pathos from the reader. In several of their works, CLAMP combines shounen subject matter such as adventure, fighting, and violence with character relationships explored from a more feminine perspective. This, along with their art style, renders their work distinctive within the genre.

Despite the complex plot, the ending is well-executed and bittersweet. Rereading individual arcs still holds up well, and overall, the creativity and characters have remained among the most memorable for me. Partially, I believe this is because I first read this when I was within the target age group.

This review is for volumes 1 - 7.

YA fantasy manga. Tsubasa is a companion/crossover series with xxxHolic. Syaoran and Sakura have been the closest of friends since childhood. But now, Sakura has been attacked, and her memories are scattered as feathers across the multiverse. Without her memories, she'll die. Syaoran turns to Yuuko, the Dimension Witch, for a way to save her. Yuuko gives him a creature to guide him through the dimensions. However, Yuuko grants wishes only for a price that matches the wish. Syaoran's price is his relationship with Sakura. Yuuko takes Sakura's memories of Syaoran, memories that Sakura can never get back no matter how many feathers Syaoran collects. The wish is still too powerful for the price, so Yuuko splits the price between two other travellers - Fai, a young mage with a sweet smile and a charming sense of humour, whose motives and secrets are a dark mystery, and Kurogane, a violent assassin banished from his own world.

On paper, this series seems to be perfect for me. The need to save a friend and the amnesia trope that destroys or twists the relationship between two characters are things I love. Memory tropes in general fascinate me. The idea of gathering up bits of memory and reforming your worldview offers great opportunities for meta about the inter-relation of memory and identity, which I'm excited to see unfold.

Despite that, this isn't as good as xxxHolic so far. The characters and their interactions aren't as cool. Syaoran is plucky, determined, and devoted, but his and Sakura's dynamic so far is a bit one-sided. Sakura is sweet and oblivious, while Syaoran is angsty and determined. Fai and Kurogane have a great dynamic, but I haven't read far enough to see how it will develop. I also don't love the world/s as much. xxxHolic interweaves fantasy with the real world, while Tsubasa is a parade of funky new worlds. That's fun, but none of the worlds can be as well developed as xxxHolic's Tokyo.

ETA: Now that I've finished the series, this review badly needs updating, mostly with flailing love and hilarifying angst.

Sakura and Syaoran have been childhood friends, growing up together. However, as Sakura is royalty, they have drifted apart slightly as they have matured. This minor personal drama is suddenly overshadowed when Sakura's innate magic backfires for unknown reasons. As a result, she is left dying, with her memories scattered across countless realities. Syaoran must then bring her lifeless body to plead with a witch for the power to travel between worlds so that he can pursue the scattered memories. Along with two seemingly random companions from other realities, Syaoran如愿以偿 from the witch, but at a high cost: Sakura's memories of him.

I have been aware of Tsubasa since my teenage years. It came to my attention through osmosis when I began reading the spare manga available in Sweden in the early 2000s, but I never actually came across the series itself. Therefore, I have been aware of it for a long time without fully understanding the story and the characters, other than being able to recognize them on sight. Now that the entire series is available at my local library, I decided to catch up on what several of my friends have a lot of nostalgia for.

So far, it has been interesting. The CLAMP style alone is evoking my own nostalgia, which is nice, and the character introductions were easy to follow. I am already invested in finding out where the story goes and what is happening with both the main plot and the side-plots. I will continue reading.

PS. The helpful character bios at the end of the book are very much appreciated!

Vale,

At the moment, one can say very little, but, ignoring the beginning (which I found a bit slow), this promises to be quite epic.

The concept of multiverses is truly fascinating. It opens up a world of possibilities and speculation. Imagine countless parallel universes existing simultaneously, each with its own unique set of events and outcomes.

Vivan los multiversos! Long live the multiverses! This exclamation expresses the excitement and wonder that surrounds this idea. It makes us question the nature of reality and our place within it.

Although we may not have direct evidence of the multiverse, the theory has gained significant attention in the scientific community. Researchers are constantly exploring new ways to test and understand this concept.

As we continue to delve deeper into the mysteries of the multiverse, who knows what amazing discoveries await us? It could potentially revolutionize our understanding of the universe and change the way we view our existence.

A very interesting first volume. I discovered Clamp through Card Captor Sakura, and it's a pleasant surprise to rediscover the characters in another story. There are also nods to other works of Clamp (such as Chobits, which I also have to read). It's a great start, and I'm looking forward to a beautiful love story.

The art style in this volume is as charming as ever. The characters are vividly drawn, and their expressions and emotions are clearly conveyed. The story is engaging from the beginning, with a hint of mystery and romance. I like how the author weaves in elements from other Clamp works, creating a sort of interconnected universe.

I can't wait to see how the story develops further. Will the characters face more challenges? Will their relationships deepen? I'm sure there will be many more surprises and heartwarming moments to come. Overall, this is a great read for fans of Clamp and anyone who enjoys a good shoujo manga with a touch of magic and romance.
