About the author

Charles de Lint is the much beloved author of more than seventy adult, young adult, and children's books. Renowned as one of the trailblazers of the modern fantasy genre, he is the recipient of the World Fantasy, Aurora, Sunburst, and White Pine awards, among others. Modern Library's Top 100 Books of the 20th Century poll, conducted by Random House and voted on by readers, put eight of de Lint's books among the top 100.
De Lint is a poet, folklorist, artist, songwriter and performer. He has written critical essays, music reviews, opinion columns and entries to encyclopedias, and he's been the main book reviewer for The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction since 1987. De Lint served as Writer-in-residence for two public libraries in Ottawa and has taught creative writing workshops for adults and children in Canada and the United States. He's been a judge for several prominent awards, including the Nebula, World Fantasy, Theodore Sturgeon and Bram Stoker.

Born in the Netherlands in 1951, de Lint immigrated to Canada with his family as an infant. The family moved often during de Lint's childhood because of his father's job with an international surveying company, but by the time Charles was twelve—having lived in Western Canada, Turkey and Lebanon—they had settled in Lucerne, Quebec, not far from where he now resides in Ottawa, Ontario.

In 1980, de Lint married the love of his life, MaryAnn Harris, who works closely with him as his first editor, business manager and creative partner. They share their love and home with a cheery little dog named Johnny Cash.

Charles de Lint is best described as a romantic: a believer in compassion, hope and human potential. His skilled portrayal of character and settings has earned him a loyal readership and glowing praise from peers, reviewers and readers.

Charles de Lint writes like a magician. He draws out the strange inside our own world, weaving stories that feel more real than we are when we read them. He is, simply put, the best.
—Holly Black (bestselling author)
Charles de Lint is the modern master of urban fantasy. Folktale, myth, fairy tale, dreams, urban legend—all of it adds up to pure magic in de Lint's vivid, original world. No one does it better.
—Alice Hoffman (bestselling author)

To read de Lint is to fall under the spell of a master storyteller, to be reminded of the greatness of life, of the beauty and majesty lurking in shadows and empty doorways.
—Quill & Quire

His Newford books, which make up most of de Lint's body of work between 1993 and 2009, confirmed his reputation for bringing a vivid setting and repertory cast of characters to life on the page. Though not a consecutive series, the twenty-five standalone books set in (or connected to) Newford give readers a feeling of visiting a favourite city and seeing old friends.
More recently, his young adult Wildlings trilogy—Under My Skin, Over My Head, and Out of This World—came out from Penguin Canada and Triskell Press in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Under My Skin won 2013 Aurora Award. A novel for middle-grade readers, The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, published by Little Brown in 2013, won the Sunburst Award, earned starred reviews in both Publishers Weekly and Quill & Quire, and was chosen by the New York Times Editors as one of the top six children's books for 2013. His most recent adult novel, The Mystery of Grace (2009), is a fascinating ghost story about love, passion and faith. It was a finalist for both the Sunburst and Evergreen awards.

De Lint is presently writing a new adult novel. His storytelling skills also shine in his original songs. He and MaryAnn (also a musician) recently released companion CDs of their original songs, samples of which can be heard on de Lin

The bio presented here quite justly refers to de Lint as a trailblazer.

Among these two works that are bound together, and with a gorgeous cover created by Thomas Canty, the first one is truly remarkable. It is in this particular work that de Lint takes a bold step and places the Wild Hunt on motorcycles. This innovative concept immediately grabs the reader's attention and sets the stage for a unique and exciting adventure.

By combining the traditional and mysterious idea of the Wild Hunt with the modern and powerful image of motorcycles, de Lint creates a captivating blend of the old and the new. This not only showcases his creativity as an author but also his ability to think outside the box and bring fresh perspectives to familiar themes.

The result is a story that is sure to engage and thrill readers, transporting them into a world where the boundaries between the supernatural and the real are blurred.

I've read the first novel in this set of two novels a couple of times now. Years ago, I read it for the first time. Then, a couple of weeks ago, since I checked out the omnibus, I needed a refresher to read the second one.

The book was written before Harry Potter, and the author's perception of the magical world is thus not influenced by the mindset of the Harry Potter books. Instead of providing an escape into a perfect magical world, this one is rather down-to-earth and full of courageous characters who require someone to come to their rescue. The first novel focuses on Jacky, who is the latest "jack" needed to battle the giants and other malevolent fairies. Her best friend offers support, and she encounters a prince who also assists her in her adventure. It concludes with her joining the fairy kingdom, and everything seems wonderful.

The second book commences with an entirely different group of characters, and then Jacky makes an appearance a few chapters later. The point of view alternates among different characters, but I simply couldn't generate sufficient interest in the new characters to invest time in reading this book. I'm certain that some people would adore this book, and there wasn't anything that I found objectionable. I'm just not interested, at least not at the moment when I have so many other things going on. Perhaps in a couple of years, I'll complete it.

I really liked this book.

Although it's a bit rough around the edges, as it's apparently one of de Lint's earlier works, it's still an amazing adventure.

Jacky Rowan is the central character in this collection of two novels. She's a "Jack" in the traditional sense, full of tricks and blessed with a great deal of luck.

If you're a fan of de Lint, you can probably guess what's coming next. Faeries are abundant and they're facing an attack. Jacky has the desire to assist, but the question is, is her luck sufficient for this particular situation?

I have a soft spot for old-school fantasy, and this book meets that criterion perfectly. It's a lively and exciting adventure that includes elements such as faeries, biker gangs, and god-like fiddlers. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has a passion for urban fantasy.

I'm giving it three stars because it has a good story. However, I do wish it had been more refined and polished.

These stories were the very first ones that I had the pleasure of reading by De Lint. And as soon as I finished them, I just knew deep within my heart that I had discovered an author whom I would follow no matter where they led.

Fast forward many years, and that initial impression has proven to be absolutely true.

This particular genre, whether you choose to call it Urban Fantasy or Urban Paranormal, is presented here at its very finest. The characters are so incredibly compelling that they draw you in and make you care about their every move.

The city life is seamlessly blended with the fantasy elements, creating a world that feels both familiar and yet充满了奇幻色彩.

These early tales are firmly rooted in fairytale traditions, but as De Lint progresses in his later books, he expands the scope to include other rich and diverse mythologies, making his fictional universe even more captivating and expansive.

I delayed finishing this book because I was simply enjoying the world it presented so much. It's a sure sign of a really good fantasy novel.

There are two very enjoyable adventures within its pages. These adventures are about humans who unexpectedly find themselves deeply enmeshed with the problems of the world of the supernatural creatures that live among us.

The characters in this story are truly fun. They bring a lot of life and charm to the narrative. And the adventure story itself is really cool. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, eager to see what will happen next.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good fantasy adventure. It's a great read that will transport you to another world and keep you entertained from start to finish.

Jack of Kinrowan was the very first book by Charles de Lint that I came across.

Reading de Lint's work is truly a source of great delight. His recent publication, Juniper Wiles, has rekindled my thirst for adventure.

It has been decades since I first read Jack of Kinrowan, yet it has firmly earned a place on my Keeper Shelves. So, when I decided to go back and revisit it, there it was, right where I left it.

Jack is a remarkable blend of literary excellence, contemporary settings, fantastical elements, and an epic scope. Only de Lint has the unique ability to seamlessly blend the mythic faeries of the old world with the ordinary daily lives of Canadians.

I have an immense love for his work and can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

His stories transport me to a world where the extraordinary coexists with the ordinary, and I am always eager to embark on these literary adventures.

I really enjoyed these two books. They had captivating storylines and engaging characters that kept me hooked from the very beginning.

However, I was very disappointed in the ending. It felt rushed and didn't tie up all the loose ends as neatly as I would have liked.

Despite this, I am still willing to read more from this author. I believe that every writer has off days or moments when their vision doesn't quite translate perfectly onto the page.

I'm hopeful that future works from this author will be even better and will leave me completely satisfied.

I'm excited to see what else they have in store and look forward to diving into their next book with anticipation.
