Taking good care of and properly raising, nurturing, and training one's four-legged friend/dog is of great importance. There are various aspects to consider. One can read about it continuously to gain comprehensive knowledge. This includes understanding their dietary needs, exercise requirements, and the appropriate training methods. Additionally, one can also focus specifically on the topics that are of particular interest or concern. For example, learning about different breeds and their characteristics can help in choosing the right dog for one's lifestyle. Moreover, understanding the dog's behavior and how to correct any unwanted behaviors is crucial for a harmonious relationship. By devoting time and effort to these areas, one can ensure that their dog grows up to be a healthy, happy, and well-behaved companion.

This book is truly useful, even for those who already have a good understanding of cats. The section on reading their body language is extremely helpful, providing valuable insights that can enhance the bond between you and your feline friend. I've taken the step of starting clicker training with my cats, and so far, it's going rather well.

However, as I was reading the early chapters about bringing home a kitten, I found myself experiencing anxiety. If one were to follow every single recommendation made by the author, they would be preparing for months on end and would likely develop a fear of leaving the house, constantly worried that their kitten might somehow commit suicide. It seems that the author's advice might be a bit excessive in this regard, causing unnecessary stress and worry for new kitten owners.

Overall, while the book has its useful aspects, it's important to take the advice with a grain of salt and use common sense when it comes to raising a kitten.

A Must Have for Cat Owners

Cats are wonderful companions, and as a cat owner, there are certain things that are essential for their well-being. One such must-have is a good quality litter box. A clean and comfortable litter box is crucial for a cat's hygiene and can prevent them from developing bad habits like urinating outside the box.

Another important item is a scratching post. Cats have a natural instinct to scratch, and providing them with a proper scratching post can save your furniture from being damaged. Look for a scratching post that is tall and stable, and made of materials that your cat likes to scratch, such as sisal rope or cardboard.

In addition to these basics, it's also a good idea to have some toys on hand to keep your cat entertained. Cats love to play, and toys like balls, feathers, and catnip mice can provide hours of fun. You can also rotate your cat's toys regularly to keep them interested.

Finally, don't forget about your cat's diet. Make sure to feed them a high-quality cat food that is appropriate for their age, weight, and health needs. Provide fresh water at all times, and consider adding a water fountain to encourage your cat to drink more.

By having these essential items, you can ensure that your cat is happy, healthy, and well-cared for.

Think like a cat is essentially a master class in pet ownership.

It covers a wide range of topics, from the best scratching post to dealing with the death of a cat. In fact, it covers almost everything you need to know. This makes it an extremely comprehensive and useful resource.

For example, if you want to know what it means when your cat is swishing her tail in a certain way, that information is in here too! However, the phrase "your mileage may vary" definitely applies.

The idea of clicker training might seem a bit excessive, and the concept of introducing a new spouse to a cat is a life situation that may not apply to everyone. But there's no doubt that you'll find some really valuable information in this book.

I picked up Think Like a Cat (the expanded edition with the meowing kitten on the cover) in preparation for getting a second cat. I can truthfully say that the sections on introducing two cats have been very helpful in preparing me for the actual situation.

To be honest, I kind of wish I had picked up this book before I got my first cat. Although the section about all the things in the house that could potentially kill your new kitten is a bit scary, it would have been excellent preparation for being a cat owner for the first time.

Overall, Think Like a Cat is a great resource for anyone who owns or is thinking about owning a cat.

I'm sure other cat owners will also find this resource to be equally useful and beneficial.

It's a must-have for anyone who loves and cares for their cats.

Tai tikra kačių biblija - kitaip nepavadinsi. Pradedant katės priežiūra nuo gimimo iki mirimo, be to ir apžvelgiant nemažai ligų, kurios turi atskirą skyrių knygos gale.

Aišku, dėl to teks pasistengti! Kates galima dresuoti! Tik nepamirškit gausybės skanėstų, nes katė nė piršto nejudins jei nebus skatinama tinkamai elgtis ir apdovanota gardžiu kąsneliu.

Vienas dalykas, kuris mane vēl kaip visada supykdė: blogai išverstas pavadinimas!! “Think like A Cat” verčiasi kaip “GALVOK KAIP KATĖ”! Ech, tie niekam tikę vertėjai... *facepalm*

This is truly the bible of cats - there is no other way to describe it. Starting from the care of a cat from birth to death, and also covering quite a few diseases that have a separate section at the end of the book.

Everyone who has or is planning to get a cat must read this book, because here you will find everything that is necessary to know about cats. Only by starting to think like cats will you understand what they want and what they need. And when that happens, you will have a perfect pet. Of course, for that you will have to make an effort! Cats can be trained! Just don't forget plenty of treats, because a cat won't move a finger if it's not encouraged to behave properly and rewarded with a delicious snack.

One thing that always annoys me again is the badly translated title!! “Think like A Cat” is translated as “GALVOK KAIP KATĖ”! Ugh, those hopeless translators... *facepalm*

Most valuable lessons in life are often simple yet profound. Pam Johnson-Bennett, in her work "Think Like a Cat: How to Raise a Well-Adjusted Cat--Not a Sour Puss," presents some remarkable insights.

She emphasizes the importance of loving unconditionally, expressing our true feelings, respecting others' territory, protecting the family, getting enough sleep, and always keeping an eye open for mice!

Wow. Before reading this, I had never heard of a "feline behaviorist." But that's precisely what Pam Johnson is, and there are some truly interesting things to be learned from her.

I really enjoyed delving into this book. It offers a unique perspective on not only understanding cats but also on life in general.

From one cat lover to any other potential cat lovers out there reading this, I highly recommend it. It can provide valuable lessons and a new way of looking at the world around us.

Whether you're a seasoned cat owner or just considering bringing a furry friend into your life, this book has something to offer.

It's a fascinating read that can help us better understand the behaviors and needs of our feline companions, while also teaching us some important life lessons along the way.

So, give it a try and see what you can learn from Pam Johnson-Bennett's wisdom.

You might be surprised at how much it can enrich your life and your relationship with your cat.

I truly wished I could give a copy of this remarkable book to all the cat owners I know. However, my enthusiasm waned a bit when I reached the last chapter.

The book, as a whole, is simply fantastic. Its title fails to fully capture the essence of what it offers. It delves deeper than just thinking like a cat. It takes you on a journey through your cat's entire life, from the cute kittenhood stage to the inevitable day when you lose your beloved furry friend.

I have never come across such a comprehensive book that is also so easy to read. The author covers every aspect imaginable: choosing the right cat, traveling with your cat, engaging in playtime with your cat, training your cat, and adapting to your senior cat.

Have I mentioned yet how awesome this book is? Well, let me emphasize it again. It's truly outstanding.

She even includes a great section on nutrition that teaches you the basics without overwhelming you. While she does discuss homemade and raw diets, she makes sure to warn about the significant potential dangers involved and advises you to work closely with your veterinarian. The medical appendix is also quite good. It's wonderful to read a book written by a trainer who has experience working in the veterinary field.

Any cat owner who reads this book is going to be well-prepared to understand and take care of their feline companion.

However, the only part I had an issue with is the emergencies chapter. There were some significant problems there.

First, the author had some bad luck. In the same year she published this book, new guidelines came out that changed some of our recommendations for CPR. For example, it's extremely difficult for anyone to feel a pulse or heartbeat on a critically ill animal. Even professionals often fail to correctly identify whether a pulse is present or not. The new recommendations state that it's safer to just start CPR if a pet is unconscious and not breathing.

Second, she did not recommend that owners look into taking a pet first aid and CPR class at all. CPR is very challenging to perform if you haven't received proper training. Even professionals should be retrained every couple of months. Performing CPR based solely on a written description is simply not going to be sufficient.

Third, some of the recommendations in this chapter were specifically wrong. You should not do chest compressions "gently" to avoid breaking ribs. If you don't apply enough force during the compressions, you might as well be doing nothing. Often, if you're not using enough pressure to potentially break ribs, you're not compressing hard enough. Broken ribs can be treated, but a deceased pet cannot be brought back to life.

Fourth, while she recommends that owners go to the vet right away, some of the specific advice she gives later contradicts this by suggesting waiting a certain amount of time before going to the vet.

For instance, she says that a hypothermic pet should go to the vet if they haven't warmed up after 45 minutes. But the pet should have already been at the vet's 45 minutes ago. Or she recommends that owners put KY jelly into a wound and then use clippers to clear the hair away from the wound. If the pet is stable enough for you to be attempting to clip hair around a wound, you should already be at the vet's office with professionals handling the wound care.

In conclusion, it is without a doubt the best book I have ever read on cat care. I would highly recommend it to all my clients. I just wish I could somehow remove Chapter 18.

Decent information is presented in this text, with some of it being very useful.

However, some of it is also very obvious.

Moreover, much of it appears to be overcautious.

If I didn't already own a cat, this sort of book might potentially deter me from getting one. It does so by making me believe that attending to a cat's needs is extremely arduous work. Indeed, it is crucial to inform people that there is more to taking care of a cat than simply feeding it and cleaning the litter box.

Nevertheless, it amuses me that a book about cats written by a self-proclaimed cat lover can somehow make cats seem less endearing than they actually are.

Perhaps the author intended to provide a comprehensive and realistic view of cat ownership, but in doing so, they may have inadvertently emphasized the negative aspects too much.

It's important to strike a balance and present both the joys and challenges of having a feline companion in a more engaging and positive light.
