This is an astonishing book that blurs the boundaries between personal growth and the history of accomplished black individuals. It is fair to assert that this precious inspirational volume requires an update to have a greater allure for millennials. In my view, individuals of any age can apply these life-altering principles for success. Nevertheless, these principles will motivate numerous younger African Americans to make the appropriate decisions that should have a positive impact on their lives.

It has been several years since this book was initially published, yet the lessons drawn from it remain highly relevant in the present day.

“You can be anything you desire to be, as long as you believe with unwavering conviction and act in accordance with your faith; for whatever the mind can envision and believe, the mind can accomplish.” —NAPOLEON HILL. This powerful quote emphasizes the significance of belief and action in achieving one's goals. The book likely contains many such valuable insights and stories that can inspire readers to reach for the stars and overcome any obstacles in their path.

I had a complex set of emotions when reading this book. A few years ago, I had already delved into Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" and found it quite engaging. The mixed feelings I experienced this time around stemmed from some of the early passages in the book and its overall format.

Dennis Kimbro was essentially selected by Napoleon Hill's team to present the concepts from Hill's original work to a Black audience. (There is also a version targeted at a Latino audience.) I can understand the intention of specifically reaching out to these audiences and building on any ideas that might not have been addressed in the original. I also recognize the potential profitability of re-releasing similar information for special interest groups, which I believe is more the purpose of this book.

As a Black woman, when I read Napoleon Hill's original, I always noticed the things that weren't written with my voice or perspective in mind. Nevertheless, I still consider Hill's original to be one of the better self-improvement books I've read, and I saw many of the concepts as being quite universal. In this version that caters to the Black audience, I still feel that, as a Black woman, the book falls short. It is written from a male perspective, and I understand that it's impossible for a book to cover every single possible premise. However, early on, Kimbro can come across as a bit preachy, and there is a hint of "black respectability" undertones. For instance, when alluding to the phrase "Black Power," Kimbro states that "it implies dominance or retaliation for oppression." I, of course, don't agree with this premise, but one must keep in mind the funders of this book (i.e., Napoleon Hill's Foundation). There are success stories from both men and women, which is a plus, and I think the majority, if not all, of the examples in this book are of Black people.

Yet, there was another issue with the formatting of the book that I don't remember being as much of a bother in Hill's original. Hill's original seemed more in-depth about himself and a few other examples of other ostensibly "great men." However, early on in Kimbro's version, I felt there was a constant repetition of very brief anecdotes that followed this format: Here is a person who faced adversity. That person was determined in life and went down in history as very successful.

The anecdotes are too brief to truly understand the applicable information on how the person actually became successful, and there could have been fewer of them. In other words, the same information could have had more impact by going into more depth with fewer examples rather than having many shallow examples that are easily forgettable due to their similarities.

I did find more value towards the end of the book, where I felt it got closer to its predecessor in tone. It shifted from the anecdotes to universal concepts such as the power of the mind, divine intelligence, and having a burning desire to succeed. If you have to choose between the two, read the original. This one has twice the fluff and half the substance. That's not to say there isn't any value here. I read both, but I simply prefer the original.

You gotta read, think, apply and sell.

Reading is the foundation. It broadens our knowledge and exposes us to different ideas and perspectives.

Thinking allows us to process the information we have read, analyze it, and form our own opinions.

Applying what we have learned is crucial. It is through application that we can put our knowledge into practice and see its real value.

Finally, selling is the culmination of the process. We need to be able to communicate our ideas and solutions effectively to others, whether it is to a client, a team, or the market.

In conclusion, reading, thinking, applying, and selling are all essential skills that we need to develop in order to succeed in today's fast-paced and competitive world.
