Additionally, the "headings" within the chapters were likely added after the book was completed. They don't always accurately correspond to the sections they are supposed to head and they have a tendency to be rather "cute," which doesn't quite match the style of the main body of the book. However, these are just minor details. Overall, the information presented in this book is both interesting and useful. There are numerous pages that I have earmarked, intending to refer back to them and think about the content more deeply.

This book provides a rather good overview. I would love to see someone attempt the thought experiment of imagining the world from a dog's perspective. I'm aware that's an impossibility, as dogs don't have the ability to talk, and we can only guess. Still, I've always wished for someone with knowledge to give it their best try.

There's a wealth of useful how-to information here for dog owners. It includes details about the various stages of a dog's life, from birth to death. I have no doubt that those who share their lives with dogs will discover something valuable in this book to make their companion's life happier and more fulfilling. The book contains some wonderful and fascinating information about how dogs experience the world around them and respond to that information. I'm not hesitant to share my opinion. The evidence is overwhelming that they possess both. While scientific rigor is important, and we must concede that we can never fully understand what goes on inside a dog's head, it's surely unreasonable to ignore all the evidence suggesting that dogs have a rich and full inner life. I won't even begin to discuss those idiots who insist that animals don't feel pain. That type of thinking deserves to become extinct if it isn't already.

I understand that we shouldn't anthropomorphize dogs, but I don't believe that's what I'm doing here. I'm not attributing human qualities to them simply because I credit them with consciousness and the ability to reason. I never claimed that they reason exactly like we do or experience the exact same emotional inner life. I simply believe that they do have experiences and emotions. I think that if you could somehow elevate a dog's intelligence and complexity to the same level as ours, you wouldn't find yourself in the presence of dog-shaped humans. They would still be dogs who think and see the world in their own unique way, which is different from ours. When I picked up this book, I was hoping to get a little closer to understanding those differences, and I believe I have.

Anyway, if you want to understand dogs better, this book is a great place to start.
