Although the writer isn't Tom Clancy or even David Michaels (which is a pseudonym, and I believe it's Raymond Benson), and the plot and action are as excellent as those in the first Splinter Cell novel.

However, in this book, not just one but two women or female love interests meet their demise... This, for some reason, really disappoints me.

None of the male good guys die. I like the characters as Benson developed them and the overarching themes, but the relationships seem rather one-dimensional.

I'm going to read the third book in the series, which is said to be written by Grant Blackwood. So, we'll have to wait and see how it turns out.
