The romance between a 50-year-old dude and a 30-year-old seems a bit weird and out of place. It kind of detracts from the overall enjoyment of the story. If that part had been either toned down or removed completely, the book would have been even better. Nevertheless, despite this small flaw, the book still has a lot of great qualities and I would definitely recommend it to others who enjoy action-packed stories.

David Michaels made a conscious effort to reduce the forced insertion of video game references and instead placed a greater emphasis on the story. Picking up precisely where the previous book left off, Fisher's mission is to bring down The Shop, an organization that is dedicated to supplying terrorists around the world with weapons.

By reusing one of the villains from the previous book, it is evident that Michaels was attempting to establish The Shop as Fisher's archnemesis, similar to the dynamic between James Bond and Blofeld. Although Michaels doesn't quite achieve this, his fast-paced storytelling remains engaging.

Despite being presented from a first-person perspective, Fisher still comes across as a somewhat bland character. His relationship with Katia is still fraught with tension carried over from the previous book and fails to offer any new insights into his personality. Her death in Fisher's arms was extremely cliched and predictable. Similarly, Sarah doesn't make an appearance until the very end of the book, leaving Fisher on his mission alone for the majority of the time. He also has a curiously antagonistic relationship with Frances Coen, whereas in the games he is much more amicable towards her.

I appreciated the diverse range of situations that Fisher encounters, but there are so many "missions" throughout the book - one of which he completes after being in the hospital - that it becomes rather unbelievable, much like John Clark in the mainstream Jack Ryan, Jr. novels.

Is it of Clancy-level quality? No. However, like the games, it offers an enjoyable adventure with a secret agent.
