I wouldn't classify it as a financial thriller or a terrorism thriller. Instead, it leans more towards being a post-Vietnam thriller. It contains numerous and rather superficial remarks about the ill-treatment of veterans upon their return from Vietnam. The book depicts a substantial number of vets as PTSD sufferers who struggle to integrate into ordinary society. This is most vividly personified by the antagonist of the story, Colonel David Hudson. He is a Rambo-like figure, yet he depends more on his intellect and leadership skills than on brute strength. I had the impression that the reader is expected to feel sympathy for Hudson as he is a patriot who was taken advantage of by his country, but I simply can't identify with a terrorist mastermind. The social commentary on Vietnam vets was well-meant, but it didn't quite resonate with me.

The character that I did appreciate was the law enforcement hero, Arch Carroll. He came across as a solid, down-to-earth kind of person.

I'm not sure why this scene was necessary, except perhaps for its topicality in the mid-1980s. The passages related to sound police work were more plausible. At one point, Arch Carroll is conducting research at FBI headquarters and discovers a connection between the Green Band members. I also expected a late-in-the-game betrayal, which I got, particularly with the character Francois Monserrat.

Overall, I found “Black Friday” to be longer than it needed to be, with some predictable plot twists. I don't think I'll be returning to Patterson's work. But considering his popularity, he'll无疑 be doing fine. And I do appreciate his contributions to universities and libraries.

The suspense lasts for an extremely long time. The reader is continuously reminded of both the suspense and the fact that we know nothing about the antagonists. Additionally, the main character is always fatigued.

The unchanging nature of the descriptions becomes tiresome after a while. Moreover, the romance subplot is completely foreseeable from the blurb on the back of the book.

Besides, there is a huge political plot to reverse America's fortunes, countless secret organizations within one another, and sufficient mystery for a book three times the size of this one.

It is an easy read when there is nothing else to read, but it is not a very light one, nor is it a very well-written one.
