Don Colbert’s book, The Seven Pillars of Health, is a comprehensive guide filled with valuable information on maintaining good health. Dr. Colbert, a family practice medical doctor with years of experience and a Christian perspective, organizes the book around seven fundamental principles or pillars of health.

\tEach pillar is further divided into several daily segments, with the final pillar having eight. Dr. Colbert provides a theological reason for this, comparing his 50 days of health to the ‘Jubilee Cycle’ of ancient Israel. However, more importantly, he suggests that readers consume the information in small chunks to avoid being overwhelmed.

\tThe first pillar of health is water. Dr. Colbert emphasizes the importance of drinking plenty of water and explains that not all water is the same. He details the purity, acidity, and molecular structure of water. The second pillar focuses on sleep patterns, addressing not only the need for sleep but also the causes of insomnia, the stages of sleep, and various sleep aids.

\tThe third pillar is Living Food. Dr. Colbert explains the concept of ‘living’ and ‘dead’ foods and encourages readers to choose the former. He warns about the dangers of ‘dead’ foods containing MSG, high sugar content, white flour, and other processed ingredients. While suggesting living foods as an alternative, he also discusses hidden dangers such as irradiation and acidity.

\tExercise is the fourth pillar, where readers will find encouragement rather than surprises. The fifth pillar is detoxification. Dr. Colbert reveals the disturbing fact that we are surrounded by toxins from many unexpected sources. He concedes that it is impossible to avoid all environmental toxins but provides strategies for enhancing the body’s cleansing system.

\tIn the sixth pillar, Dr. Colbert suggests nutritional supplements. He explains that various factors deplete our foods of vital nutrients and recommends that patients take a regular multivitamin, along with photonutrient powder and omega-3. The final pillar addresses the problem of stress and provides strategies for alleviating, avoiding, and overcoming it.

\tAlthough Dr. Colbert’s organization and presentation of the material are effective, the sheer amount of data may overwhelm some readers. He struggles to find a balance between a shorter, practical book for a general audience and a more in-depth volume for specialists. Some of his recommendations, such as a hexagonal alkalinizing filtration system for home drinking water, may seem idealistic. However, if readers can look beyond the overwhelming volume of recommendations and focus on the many alternate options, they will find valuable guidance towards a healthier and happier life.

I have truly learned a great deal from this book. It goes far beyond mere common sense tips. It is not just a basic book that simply tells you to eat healthily and exercise.

Instead, it delves deeper and reveals crucial information. For instance, it emphasizes the importance of drinking clean, filtered water if you truly want to make a difference in your health. It also warns against processed foods that are often laden with MSG, which can have negative impacts on our well-being.

Moreover, it discloses all kinds of fascinating facts. It tells us how food companies employ the brightest scientists to formulate their products in a way that makes them addictive, often using MSG as a key ingredient.

Anyway, these are just some of the many valuable pieces of information shared in the book. I firmly believe that it is extremely beneficial to be aware of all these details. It provides us with a more comprehensive understanding of how our diet and lifestyle choices can affect our health, and empowers us to make more informed decisions for a better quality of life.

Here's just a quick sum up of the book:

Chapter 1: Water is truly beneficial for you. However, it's not the kind that you typically drink.

Chapter 2: Sleep is really good for you, but you might be doing it all wrong.

Chapter 3: Food should only be consumed if necessary. But seriously, you're going to face consequences! (Subchapter - Meat is extremely bad for you, as PETA provided me with reliable statistics. The same goes for milk, fruits, and all other substances when you think about it.)

Chapter 4: Exercise is essential, but you probably have incorrect methods.

Chapter 5: Detoxification is crucial. It's a wonder you're still alive. Just don't touch anything!

Chapter 6: Nutritional Supplements - You might be taking too much, and I personally hate fish oil.

Chapter 7: Stress - We all experience it, but I have less than you because my wife can drive her Hummer over curbs to reach the airport on time. By the way, you're breathing incorrectly too.

I feel as if I just read a book by Dr Fauci's cousin! I'm really confused as to why, if everything in the world is toxic and all I need to do is pray a magical prayer asking God to cleanse me, I even need this book.

On a more serious note, this is a health book written by a charismatic doctor, similar to Kenneth Copland's craziness. It involves magic prayers, spoken word healing, self-forgiveness, and simply believing oneself into good health. I'm sure there is some truth in it, but it's not worth keeping. Moreover, I'm always doubly suspicious when, in every example given, those who followed this man's advice immediately got better, while those who didn't were left unhealed. These seem like convenient truths.

Plus, changing yoga to Christian truths reminds me of changing rap to Christian lyrics. It's essentially the same thing, and from a distance, you can't tell the difference. There goes the idea of being the light of the world!
