Taken from Lowry's website:
"I've always felt that I was fortunate to have been born the middle child of three. My older sister, Helen, was very much like our mother: gentle, family-oriented, eager to please. Little brother Jon was the only boy and had interests that he shared with Dad; together they were always working on electric trains and erector sets; and later, when Jon was older, they always seemed to have their heads under the raised hood of a car. That left me in-between, and exactly where I wanted most to be: on my own. I was a solitary child who lived in the world of books and my own vivid imagination.

Because my father was a career military officer - an Army dentist - I lived all over the world. I was born in Hawaii, moved from there to New York, spent the years of World War II in my mother's hometown: Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and from there went to Tokyo when I was eleven. High school was back in New York City, but by the time I went to college (Brown University in Rhode Island), my family was living in Washington, D.C.

I married young. I had just turned nineteen - just finished my sophomore year in college - when I married a Naval officer and continued the odyssey that military life requires. California. Connecticut (a daughter born there). Florida (a son). South Carolina. Finally Cambridge, Massachusetts, when my husband left the service and entered Harvard Law School (another daughter; another son) and then to Maine - by now with four children under the age of five in tow. My children grew up in Maine. So did I. I returned to college at the University of Southern Maine, got my degree, went to graduate school, and finally began to write professionally, the thing I had dreamed of doing since those childhood years when I had endlessly scribbled stories and poems in notebooks.

After my marriage ended in 1977, when I was forty, I settled into the life I have lived ever since. Today I am back in Cambridge, Massachusetts, living and writing in a house dominated by a very shaggy Tibetan Terrier named Bandit. For a change of scenery Martin and I spend time in Maine, where we have an old (it was built in 1768!) farmhouse on top of a hill. In Maine I garden, feed birds, entertain friends, and read...

My books have varied in content and style. Yet it seems that all of them deal, essentially, with the same general theme: the importance of human connections. A Summer to Die, my first book, was a highly fictionalized retelling of the early death of my sister, and of the effect of such a loss on a family. Number the Stars, set in a different culture and era, tells the same story: that of the role that we humans play in the lives of our fellow beings.

The Giver - and Gathering Blue, and the newest in the trilogy: Messenger - take place against the background of very different cultures and times. Though all three are broader in scope than my earlier books, they nonetheless speak to the same concern: the vital need of people to be aware of their interdependence, not only with each other, but with the world and its environment.

My older son was a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force. His death in the cockpit of a warplane tore away a piece of my world. But it left me, too, with a wish to honor him by joining the many others trying to find a way to end conflict on this very fragile earth.
I am a grandmother now. For my own grandchildren - and for all those of their generation - I try, through writing, to convey my passionate awareness that we live intertwined on this planet and that our future depends upon our caring more, and doing more, for one another."

I rated every book that I read during childhood 5 stars.

Why did I do that? Well, it was because that was a special time in my life. During childhood, I had a pure and innocent love for every single thing I read. Each book was like a magical adventure that took me to different worlds and introduced me to various characters and stories.

Moreover, those books bring back such fond memories. They remind me of the cozy afternoons spent curled up with a good book, the excitement of turning the pages to see what would happen next, and the joy of sharing those stories with my friends and family.

Ah, the joys of being young! When everything seemed possible and every book was a precious treasure. Those 5-star ratings are not just a measure of the books themselves, but also a reflection of the wonderful childhood that I had.

A great series indeed!

The boys and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about Sam. His adventures and experiences have been truly captivating.

Each story has been filled with excitement, mystery, and valuable life lessons. We have laughed along with Sam and his friends, and felt their joys and sorrows.

It's such a pity that this is the last one. We will surely miss following Sam's journey.

However, we are grateful for the wonderful memories and the hours of entertainment this series has provided.

We will cherish these books and recommend them to others who are looking for a great read.

Thank you to the author for creating such a wonderful series!

Who could have known that embarking on a trip to Alaska with the intention of laying in a pile with a bunch of walruses would demand such extensive planning? It seems rather unusual at first glance, but as one delves deeper into the concept, it becomes a truly fascinating and unique adventure. The idea of being up close and personal with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking. There are so many factors to consider, from the best time of year to visit to the necessary gear and accommodations. But despite the challenges, the anticipation of this once-in-a-lifetime experience is palpable. It's sure to be a cute and funny read as we follow the journey of someone brave enough to take on this extraordinary endeavor.

Sam has a strong desire to possess things.

He often finds himself longing for items simply because he sees other people having them.

This constant comparison with others makes him believe that by acquiring the same things, he will be just as cool as they are.

Sam fails to realize that true coolness comes from within and cannot be measured by material possessions.

He is so caught up in the idea of keeping up with the Joneses that he overlooks his own unique qualities and interests.

Instead of focusing on what makes him special, he chases after the latest trends and fads, hoping to fit in and be accepted.

However, this pursuit of external validation often leaves him feeling empty and unfulfilled.

Sam needs to learn that it is okay to be different and that true happiness and self-worth cannot be bought.

The boy in this story is Sam, who is just four years old. He starts to dislike his mother because she doesn't allow him to wear fangs in the house. Sam makes a rather bold decision - he decides to run away to Alaska so that he can wear his fangs whenever and wherever he wants.

Before setting off on his adventure, Sam visits all of his neighbors. The reason for this is that he has no idea how to get to Alaska. It's quite a humorous and typical thing for a four-year-old to do. Get angry with his mom, come up with the idea of running away, and then likely end up back home.

From this simple yet entertaining story, children can learn an important lesson. They can understand that the idea of running away isn't as exciting and glamorous as it might seem at first. It's just a passing thought that usually leads them back to the safety and comfort of their own homes.

I am truly interested in knowing what the 5 - 7 year old readers have to say regarding this book. It would be fascinating to discover whether they will appreciate Sam's adventure. Will they be enthralled by the exciting events that unfold?

Also, I wonder how they perceive the adults' "help". Do they view it as beneficial or perhaps as something that gets in the way of Sam's independence?

These young readers have a unique perspective, and their thoughts and feelings about the story could provide valuable insights.

I look forward to hearing their opinions and seeing how they engage with the book.

Their responses might even inspire new ideas for future stories or help to improve the current one.

It's always exciting to explore the minds of these young readers and see how they interpret and connect with the written word.

Overall, I believe that their feedback will be both enlightening and entertaining.

This is a really fun little read that I believe a great number of my students would thoroughly enjoy.

It has an engaging and interesting storyline that can capture the attention of readers easily.

The language used is simple yet vivid, making it accessible to a wide range of ages.

As an educator, I am always on the lookout for materials that can spark the interest and imagination of my students.

This particular piece seems to fit the bill perfectly.

I can envision my students getting lost in the story, experiencing a range of emotions as they follow the characters' adventures.

It would not only provide them with entertainment but also enhance their reading skills and vocabulary.

I am excited to share this with my students and see how they respond to it.

I'm sure it will become a favorite among them.
