In the company of his fellow talking cats, Dulcie and Kit, they continuously solve crimes and offer assistance to the police.

In this particular volume, Molena Point finds itself under siege by a large and organized robbery gang. Coincidentally, a woman named Chichi Barbi relocates next door to Joe's human partner, Clyde. Joe immediately becomes suspicious, as the woman had previously swindled Clyde out of money when they resided in the big city. In a potentially related subplot, the feral clowder of talking cats that Kit used to belong to has returned to the area, and it appears that someone has been setting traps for them.

This series straddles the intersection of mystery and speculative fiction, presenting a "one impossible thing" story. In this instance, the impossible element is talking cats. The origin of these mutants remains unexplained in this book, and seemingly unknown to the cats themselves – Joe simply realized one day that he could talk. Even with the feral clowder, the natural lifespan of a talking cat remains uncertain.

A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the human romantic subplot. Clyde's love interest, Ryan, who is unaware of the secret, is being harassed by a handsome and suave acquaintance from the big city, while Chichi makes her advances on Clyde in a distressingly blatant manner.

Most of the plot points are neatly tied together by the end, although there are a few red herrings, at least one of which remains unresolved.

There are also some editing issues that I find concerning in a book published by HarperCollins. There are a couple of spellchecker errors, but more significantly, there is a major time discrepancy. For a few chapters, it is a crucial plot point that two events are separated by several days, yet in the next chapter, the first event is described as "yesterday morning" despite the second event also being in the past. While this may not be relevant to solving the mystery, it does impact the characterization.

Overall, this is a great read for mystery enthusiasts who are also cat lovers, although there is some emotional abuse perpetrated by one of the villains.
