The Lords and the New Creatures

Originally self-published as two separate volumes in 1969 (The Lords/Notes on Vision, which Morrison described as "a thesis on film aesthetics," and The New Creatures, a surreal portrait of modern existence), the late singer's first published volume of poetry gives a revealing glimpse of an era and the man whose songs and savage performances have left an indelible impression on our culture. This collection, born out of the tumultuous social and political landscape of the late sixties, is as intense, sensual, and compelling as Jim Morrison's persona was during the Doors' peak. His fast life and mysterious death remain controversial more than forty years later.

This is nothing more than a collection of ramblings and descriptions.

It seems as if the author just let their thoughts flow freely onto the page without much regard for structure or organization.

The poems lack titles, which makes it difficult to understand the intended theme or message of each one.

Furthermore, there are no markings to indicate where one poem begins and where the next one ends.

This lack of clarity can be quite frustrating for the reader, who is left to piece together the meaning on their own.

Despite this, there are still some interesting and thought-provoking ideas expressed within the collection.

The descriptions are vivid and detailed, painting a picture in the reader's mind.

However, without proper titles and separations, it is hard to fully appreciate and analyze the individual poems.

Perhaps with a little more effort put into organization and presentation, this collection could have been even more impactful.

Finding the deeper meaning to life holds great significance for more cerebral individuals.

For those embarking on this kind of journey to fathom the meaning of life, this book is tailor-made for you. Jim Morrison, leveraging his profound knowledge of existential philosophers and poets, pen down his spiritual experiences. This book has the potential to expand the readers' minds to infinite possibilities, ranging from the personal to the worldly.

Jim Morrison, a singer, songwriter, and poet, was born in Melbourne, Florida. He spent the majority of his short life in Venice, California. His music played a pivotal role in transforming psychedelic rock and marked the dawn of an era for rock musicians. His performances were significantly influenced by several drugs and alcohol, endowing him with unique perspectives on life. Morrison fearlessly opened his mind to new realities, even living on a roof with just canned beans and LSD for months. Friedrich Nietzsche was a major influence on his poetry, and he adopted similar views on morality and duality, achieving this through the use of very ambiguous metaphors and similes.

"The Lords and the New Creatures" commences with a statement essential for setting the readers' mindset to understand the remainder of the book. He proclaims, "watch where we worship." As Morrison delves deeper into worldly aspects, he employs metaphors related to sex, drugs, and people. This necessitates dissecting his writing to unearth the true meaning. The first half of the book, titled "The Lords," predominantly discusses life and the way we perceive it. As he transitions into the second half, named "The New Creatures," he narrates the way we approach problems, not only with others but also with ourselves.

Morrison employs a plethora of literary devices, rendering the book unique and showcasing his own writing style. This style, distinct from most, elicits either enjoyment or aversion from readers. Metaphors, allusions, and analogies saturate his poems in an attempt to connect his ideas to the real world. This intricate aspect of his writing ensures that the reader can identify some similarities with the messages he conveys. This is what makes his writing style universal to almost all readers.

I derived great pleasure from this book; however, I am cognizant that it is not for everyone. One must be in a conducive atmosphere and receptive to novel and peculiar ideas about life. This would be particularly beneficial for anyone with an inclination towards philosophy. Morrison does an excellent job of analyzing aspects of life that people typically overlook. My only qualm with the book was that some of the metaphors were too indistinct to comprehend.

The boundless galaxies of dust seem to hold countless mysteries. Amidst this dusty expanse, there are cactus spines, beads, bleach stones, bottles, and rust cars, all stored and waiting to be shaped. The new man, a time-soldier, carefully and narrowly picked his way through the crowded ruins of what was once a great and solemn city. The destruction is palpable, yet there is a glimmer of hope in the midst of it all. As he moves forward, one wonders what the future holds for this place and for him. Will he be able to bring about any kind of change or restoration? Only time will tell. And a review is sure to follow, perhaps shedding more light on this desolate yet captivating scene.

Modern life is like a journey by car.

The passengers experience drastic changes in their smelly seats, or they wander from one car to another, constantly undergoing transformation.

Inevitable progress is made towards the beginning (since there is no difference in the terminals).

As we speed through cities, their torn backsides display a moving panorama of windows, signs, streets, and buildings.

Sometimes, other vehicles, like closed worlds or vacuums, travel beside us, either moving ahead or falling far behind.

Incredible! My favorite collection is The Lords! It's truly amazing how these different elements come together to create the unique experience of modern life on the road.

The constant movement, the changing scenery, and the diverse range of passengers all contribute to the rich tapestry of this journey.

Whether we are sitting still in traffic or racing along the highway, every moment is filled with possibility and adventure.

The Lords collection, in particular, seems to capture the essence of this modern existence, with its vivid imagery and thought-provoking themes.

It's no wonder it's my favorite.

In that particular year, there occurred an extremely intense visitation of energy.

This overwhelming force led me to make a rather drastic decision. I left school and journeyed down to the beach to commence a new chapter of my life.

During my time there, I found myself sleeping on a roof.

At night, as I lay there looking up at the sky, the moon took on an extraordinary guise. It became like a woman's face, beautiful and mysterious.

It was in this enchanting setting that I had a remarkable encounter. I met the Spirit of Music.

This encounter would go on to have a profound impact on my life, inspiring me in ways I could never have imagined.

JDM's words seem to paint a vivid picture of a moment in time that was filled with wonder and possibility.

It makes one wonder what other adventures and experiences awaited him during that time at the beach.

Perhaps it was a period of self-discovery and growth, a time when he was able to connect with something deeper within himself.

Whatever the case may be, it is clear that this was a significant event in his life, one that he would never forget.

In my personal opinion, this work is just a bunch of rambling.

Sometimes, it even gives the impression that random words, which only loosely pertain to each other, were simply put together in poem form.

Judging from the back cover of the book, I had high hopes that it would be a fun and engaging journey. However, it failed to live up to those expectations.

Perhaps, the fault lies within me. Maybe I just don't have the necessary understanding or perception to truly appreciate this piece of work.

It could be that there are hidden depths and meanings that I am simply not able to grasp.

Nonetheless, based on my initial impression, I can't help but feel a sense of disappointment.

I had anticipated something more profound and captivating, but what I got was rather lackluster.

Maybe with further study and reflection, I will be able to see the value and beauty that others seem to find in it.

For now, though, I remain somewhat skeptical.

The Doors, and Morrison in particular, held significant cultural sway in my novel about the so-called silent generation, "The Duke Don't Dance."

Morrison had a profound impact on both the disenchanted younger generation at home and those embroiled in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. The Doors' recordings were extremely popular there, almost to the point of being addictive.

He appealed to those who expressed their simple despair over the continuous stream of casualties with the words "it don't mean nothin'," as well as those who sought an intellectual anchor in references to Blake, Brecht, and ancient Irish legends.

Morrison's poetry was fractured and obscure, yet it was not just the random musings of a drug addict. However, it can only be fully appreciated within the context of the widespread national trauma of the 1960s and 1970s, rather than in today's compartmentalized society where warriors, minorities, and the poor are isolated from the mainstream.
