These poems seem to mirror the crucial aspects of Jim Morrison's life.

A significant number of them incorporated elements of sex and liquor, while some also delved into the realm of rock’n’roll.

I had a certain fondness for a couple of these poems, yet for the most part, they failed to hold a great deal of appeal for me.

Perhaps it was because the themes were a bit too familiar or perhaps the way they were expressed didn't quite resonate with my personal sensibilities.

Nonetheless, it's interesting to see how Morrison's life experiences and interests found their way into his poetry, providing a unique window into his world.

Even though I didn't connect with all of the poems, they still offer valuable insights into the mind and artistry of this iconic figure.

Maybe with further exploration and a deeper understanding of Morrison's context, I might come to appreciate these poems more fully.

The self-interview at the very start of the book offers us a peek into what lies ahead.

Jim was not merely a singer but also a writer. In fact, he preferred to define himself as a poet. He devoured great writers (I'm rather envious of the quantity of works he read and owned) and was influenced by them.

The rebellious Jim was highly swayed by poets such as Rimbaud. His poetry is filled with critiques of institutions like the church, society, and family, as well as of himself. He portrays himself in a negative light. I detect a tone of regret and guilt, especially towards the end of the book, which is believed to contain his last poems.

He was also significantly influenced by Nietzsche and Blake. Blake's saying that "the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom" seems to be known to Jim, which might explain the excess in his life ("why do I drink? So that I can write poetry"). Among the numerous references to Blake's poetry in Jim's, I particularly like when he uses religious themes in an inverted way. In "Forgive me Father for I know what I do. I want to hear the last Poem of the last Poet", there is clearly an inversion of Jesus' biblical words.

His close connection to nature is also very prominent throughout his poems. The way he depicts nature and personalizes it intrigues me. I've read works that classify Jim as a shaman, though I'm not sure if that makes sense. However, this link between him and nature, among other things, could fit here. The accident he witnessed in Albuquerque at the age of four, in which he believed he was possessed by the spirit of an Indian, is mentioned more than once, as are his "hallucinations". Here, they could all be the result of his "shaman soul" and body being possessed, but they could also be a consequence of his use of LSD and other drugs, or due to his drinking.

The way he felt himself out of his body and inhabiting other worlds during his shows, as in a trance, can also be seen in what he wrote. The more I read his poetry, the more interpretations it allows me to have. The songs he wrote sound like poetry, and his poetry is like a song to my ears.

It is not easy to get into the mind of this man. There are moments of grace and moments of total darkness. Reading about Jim Morrison is a whole experience. He was a complex and enigmatic figure, with a unique talent and a tortured soul. His lyrics were both profound and disturbing, touching on themes of love, death, and the human condition. Morrison's stage presence was electrifying, and he had a way of captivating audiences with his charisma and energy. However, his personal life was filled with turmoil and tragedy. He struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction, and his early death at the age of 27 left a void in the music world. Despite his flaws, Jim Morrison remains an icon of rock and roll, and his music continues to inspire generations of fans.

I haven't picked this up in 15 years or so.

But back in high school (HS), I truly loved this stuff.

It was a significant part of my life then.

Now, as I think about it, I wonder how it would look to me now.

So much time has passed, and I have changed in many ways.

Would I still have the same level of enthusiasm and appreciation for it?

Or would it seem different, perhaps even a bit strange?

I'm curious to find out.

Maybe it's time to give it another try and see if it can still bring back those memories and feelings from my HS days.

Who knows what might happen?

It could be a completely new experience, or it could reignite that old passion within me.

Only one way to find out.

Try as I might, I can't recommend this. It is truly and purely awful. From the very beginning, it fails to meet even the most basic of expectations. The quality is subpar, with numerous flaws and shortcomings that are impossible to overlook. The design is unappealing, lacking any sort of charm or elegance. The functionality is also severely lacking, making it a frustrating and inefficient experience. There is simply nothing positive to say about this. It is a disappointment in every sense of the word. I would not recommend it to anyone, under any circumstances. Save your money and look elsewhere for a better alternative.

The Voice of the Serpent

A dry hiss of age and steam fills the air, as if it has endured through countless eons. The leaves of gold, once vibrant and shining, now lie scattered among the ruins of old temples. An old book, its bindings crumbling, rests there. The pages break like ash, easily disintegrating at the slightest touch.

I stand there, knowing that I will not disturb this ancient scene. I have no desire to go any further. But then, a soft voice says, "Come." An old man appears, moving in a tired dance amid the scattered dead. Gently, they stir, as if awakened by his presence.

"No wise men now," he murmurs. "Each on his own. Grab your daughter and run." But where would one run to? And where did he learn about such things? Satan - out of a book? Love - out of a box? These questions linger in the air, adding to the mystery and enigma of this strange encounter.

I wouldn't say his poetry was brilliant or anything, but it's truly intriguing.

The poems included in this book span from 1966 to 1971 and remained unpublished until the release of this very volume. It's important to note that it's not the absolute best of his work, which is perhaps the reason why he himself left it unpublished.

However, "Wilderness" does offer a unique opportunity to catch a glimpse into the mind of one of the greatest songwriters. It allows us to explore the thoughts and emotions that might have been simmering beneath the surface during that particular period of his life.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that this collection is really only for die-hard fans. Those who are deeply invested in his work and are eager to uncover every little detail and nuance will find this book to be a treasure trove. For others, it may not hold the same level of appeal. But for those true enthusiasts, it's a must-read.

It is really an extremely difficult task to finish these disjointed ramblings.

They seem to lack a clear structure and logical flow, making it a real challenge to make sense of them.

However, there was one aspect that stood out and was quite interesting. That was seeing his actual handwriting.

There is something about seeing the physical penmanship of a person that adds a certain authenticity and personal touch.

It gives an insight into their personality and the way they think.

Maybe it was the way the letters were formed, or the slant of the writing, but it somehow made the whole experience a little more engaging.

Despite the difficulties in dealing with the disjointed ramblings, seeing his handwriting was definitely the best part.

This collection of Jim Morrison’s written work truly made me ponder what poetry really is.

Do these mere scraps of thoughts actually constitute poems? In fact, it doesn't even pretend to be so.

I liked it to the extent that it reminded me of his actual lyrics that I'm familiar with from his songs or of Oliver Stone’s great and fascinating movie.

However, more often than not, the texts were completely incomprehensible. They didn't evoke anything except irritation and simply failed to touch me.

It's good to know about, but not something that's essential to know.

Alas, because The Doors remain my favourite band of all time and I never grow tired of listening to them.

Despite the shortcomings of this collection, it still holds a certain charm for me due to my deep love for The Doors and their music.

I can't help but wonder if there's more to Morrison's written work that I'm yet to discover and understand.

Perhaps with further exploration, I'll be able to see the true beauty and essence of his words that are hidden within these seemingly random scraps of thoughts.
