Frost has always been my go-to when it comes to poetry. He's so easy to understand, and if you're a nerd like me who loves to read poetry out loud, memorize it, and recite it, his works are a delight to the ears. During my senior year in college, Robert and I spent countless nights together. Even now, when faced with stormy times, I still find his words calming.

I discovered some new favorites this time around, after spending a significant amount of time with the usual suspects. "Reluctance" has always been at the top of my list. I can just picture all those leaves being sent out, scraping and creeping over the crusted snow while others are sleeping. Then there are "Birches," "Acquainted With the Night," "The Road Not Taken," all the pieces they use on Jeopardy and the poems that made the poetry billboards.

But read these lines from "Two Tramps in Mud Time" out loud:

"The sun was warm but the wind was chill. You know how it is with an April day. When the sun is out and the wind is still, You're one month on in the middle of May. Doesn't that sound like your dad is just sitting next to you, smoking a pipe and rambling on, and you just want him to keep talking? Maybe that was just my dad. He was kind of a poetry nerd, too.

2.5 stars. There were indeed a few poems within this collection that truly caught my attention and that I really liked. The words seemed to dance on the page, creating vivid images and evoking strong emotions. However, when looking at the collection as a whole, these poems just weren't to my taste. Maybe it was the overall style or theme that didn't quite resonate with me. It's not that the poems were bad; they just didn't speak to my personal preferences. I can appreciate the skill and creativity that went into writing them, but for some reason, they failed to truly engage me on a deeper level. Nevertheless, I'm sure there are others out there who will find great enjoyment and inspiration in these poems.

I earlier entered a review of a biography of Frost, and that book prompted me to locate "North of Boston," the work that first propelled Frost to fame.

Up to this point, I had read and liked the poems of Coleridge, specifically "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "Kubla Khan," and a handful more from other poets. But most works of poetry did not engage my attention. They always seemed mostly undecipherable, clouded with flowery language and awkward phrasing.

Not so Frost! With the exception of a very few, his poems are clear and accessible. They range the full gamut: from thoughtful to playful, from serious to downright funny. There is a lot of wisdom in these poems, and it is enjoyable to see him make connections from the common things around him (e.g. trees, snow, flowers, ants, and yes, people too) to the larger themes of life, death, and the human condition.

The poems are readable and clearly the work of a master craftsman. Many have rhyme schemes, but some don't. The latter are poems that look like prose, but somehow they are not. Whatever he is doing, the non-rhyming pieces read very easily. I am not expert enough (not expert at all really) to know how it is done, but he does it very well!

Her presence brings a pleasure that won't allow me to simply stay still. She chatters away, and I am eager to listen.

She rejoices in the fact that the birds have flown away, and she is glad that her simple worsted grey is now silvered by the clinging mist.

The desolate and deserted trees, the faded earth, and the heavy sky - these are the beauties that she truly perceives.

She believes that I have no appreciation for these things, and this vexes me. But I have known the love of bare November days even before the snow arrives.

Yet, it would be futile to tell her this. Maybe these days are made even better by her praise.
