Otherworld #7

No Humans Involved

Readers around the world have fallen for Kelley Armstrong’s intoxicating, sensual and wicked tales of the paranormal, in which demons and witches, werewolves and vampires collide – often hilariously, sometimes violently – with everyday life. In Armstrong’s first six novels, Elena, Paige and Eve have had their way with us. Now get ready for Jaime Vegas, the luscious, lovelorn and haunted necromancer. . .

Jaime, who knows a thing or two about showbiz, is on a television shoot in Los Angeles when weird things start to happen. As a woman whose special talent is raising the dead, her threshold for weirdness is pretty high: she’s used to not only seeing dead people but hearing them speak to her in very emphatic terms. But for the first time in her life – as invisible hands brush her skin, unintelligible fragments of words are whispered into her ears, and beings move just at the corner of her eye–she knows what humans mean when they talk about being haunted.

She is determined to get to the bottom of these manifestations, but as she sets out to solve the mystery she has no idea how scary her investigation will get, or to what depths ordinary humans will sink in their attempts to gain supernatural powers. As she digs into the dark underside of Los Angeles, she’ll need as much Otherworld help as she can get in order to survive, calling on her personal angel, Eve, and Hope, the well-meaning chaos demon. Jeremy, the alpha werewolf, is also by her side offering protection. And, Jaime hopes, maybe a little more than that.

About the author

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

Cute.

This series is like a cozy paranormal mystery. It has a charm that is both endearing and captivating. The storylines are filled with elements of the supernatural, yet they are presented in a way that is not overly scary or intense. Instead, they draw the reader in with their unique blend of mystery and charm.

The characters are well-developed and likable, making it easy for the reader to become invested in their lives and adventures. The settings are also described in vivid detail, creating a world that feels both familiar and otherworldly.

Overall, this series is a great choice for anyone who loves a good mystery with a touch of the paranormal. It's cute, cozy, and sure to keep you entertained from start to finish.

What can I say?

This series is simply a delight to read! I truly relished the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of both Jaime and Jeremy.

Jeremy, in particular, has proven to be quite different from what I initially thought based on my first impression. However, it has been wonderful to obtain more in-depth insights into his character.

One rather amusing aspect is the fact that, apparently, if you happen to be a celebrity necromancer, you are always impeccably dressed as if ready for a romantic encounter! Ha ha! It's just too hilarious!

Nevertheless, I would highly recommend reading this series regardless. :)

You're bound to have a great time and discover many interesting and entertaining aspects within its pages.

My Summary: Jamie has always been clear about her career goals. When she gets an invitation to co-star on a spiritualist reality TV show, she believes she is close to achieving her dream of having her own show. Alongside three other spiritualists, who actually lack real powers, Jamie is tasked with summoning the spirit of Marilyn Monroe and uncovering the truth behind her untimely death.

However, things don't unfold as expected. Shortly after unpacking, Jamie senses that something is amiss with the house. There are troubled spirits present, but they refuse to communicate with her. Instead, they torment her by poking, prodding, and pinching her when she is alone. Disturbed by this, Jamie reaches out to her numerous contacts in the supernatural world, determined to discover what happened to these spirits and how to release them from limbo. But what she uncovers is far more terrifying than anyone could have imagined.

My Thoughts: If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know that Kelley Armstrong is undoubtedly one of my all-time favorite authors. Her writing is impeccable, and her stories are always filled with action, mystery, and romance. It is truly hard not to enjoy her novels, and "No Humans Involved" was no exception. I adored Jamie's "voice" in this book. In previous works and from the perspectives of other characters, she seemed a bit ditzy, but not here. In "No Humans Involved," we get to see just how badass Jamie Vegas can be.

I particularly loved the romance element! Poor Jamie has been secretly in love with Jeremy for years, but he has always been a bit oblivious... until now. It appears that Jeremy has feelings for Jamie too, and in this novel, we witness the development of the relationship between these two characters who seem to be polar opposites.

Final Thoughts: If you are a fan of supernatural romance and mystery, you should definitely check out this series from the reigning queen of supernatural fiction! You will not be disappointed.

This is the seventh installment in Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series.

This time around, we have the opportunity to experience the thrilling action through the eyes of Jamie Vegas.

While filming for a TV show, Jamie discovers that the garden of the house where the filming is taking place appears to be inhabited by child ghosts. As the theory of human sacrifice for magical power is further unraveled, Jamie realizes that she needs all the help she can get.

This book can be read as a standalone, but readers might find themselves a bit confused by all the names that are brought up. This is because we encounter a plethora of different characters from Armstrong's rich and diverse world, including Paige, Lucas, Savannah, Eve, Kristof, Hope, Karl, and of course, Jeremy.

Jamie has been infatuated with Jeremy for four years, and it's truly hilarious to see how the professional flirter transforms into a 14-year-old girl in the presence of the werewolf Alpha.

The reason I have a penchant for Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series is that we get to view her world from so many different perspectives. Granted, not every main character has the same depth or allure. Elena is my personal favorite, and a significant reason behind that is the palpable angst between her and Clay. I adored Eve Levine because of her humor and sassy mouth, while her relationship with Kristof and her need for Savannah revealed her vulnerable side.

Jamie is a show girl who has endeavored to turn an unhappy life with an unloving and demanding mother into a meaningful and purposeful existence. She possesses strong powers, but these don't always prove useful in battle. This makes Jamie seem like the muddler who is constantly in need of protection. However, this book demonstrates that Jamie is more than capable of handling her own.

Overall, it's a very good, entertaining, and solid read by Kelley Armstrong.

For some reason, I have this strange longing to be able to talk to ghosts. I'm well aware of the common retorts like "well if you actually had that power you'd hate it" or "well ghosts don't exist" and so on. But here, I'm talking about a theoretical concept.

Just imagining being able to communicate with someone from a different time period is truly fascinating. It would be so enlightening to gain their perspective and knowledge. However, there are also some drawbacks. The idea of never being alone and potentially having perverted spirits watching you change is quite off-putting. Ugh, never mind.

Jaime in the story makes the ability to talk to ghosts seem both livable and cool. But at the same time, you can clearly see the damage it does to her. She can't help all the lost souls, and she can't even punch a rude or gross ghost in the face. At least she can have conversations with them.

Until one day, on the set of her big film break as a spiritualist (when in reality she is a necromancer, and she has a great cover job), Jaime starts to feel a pinch, a poke, and a grab. But she can't see anything. She hears whisper-less words, yet there is still nothing visible.

Her crush of four years proves to be useful as she tries to figure out what exactly is going on. And so does a chaos-loving half-demon (who is also our next narrator).

Kelley Armstrong's storytelling in this new heroine book of the glorious series of supernatural ladies is truly outstanding. The writing is simply glorious. This book is a 100% winner. It doubles the love I had for the last three books. It's probably my favorite since "Stolen" or "Bitten".

Jaime is truly marvelous. I really wish there were more books with her in the lead. Necromancers are so interesting to read about.

What about this book?

Finally, we have Jamie and Jeremy! Hallelujah! Praise be!

Although this romance isn't as steamy and hot as Clay and Elena's, it is still well worth the read. The build-up is a slow and steady burn, but it is truly wonderful when it all finally comes together. We get to witness a light and humorous side of Jeremy that we haven't seen before, and I absolutely loved it!

I am now extremely anxious to read Karl & Hope's story as well!

I have a deep love for the werewolves in this series. What can I say? They add an element of excitement and mystery that keeps me hooked from beginning to end. The author does an excellent job of creating a world full of unique characters and thrilling adventures. I can't wait to see what else this series has in store for me.

Armstrong has truly outdone herself with this installment. I find myself completely and utterly addicted to this remarkable series. The female characters are not only strong but also complex and captivating. The combination of paranormal romance and pulse-pounding action is simply irresistible. It keeps me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

This book is hands down the best in the series. It has everything I could ask for and more. The romance is sweet and passionate, and the action scenes are thrilling and intense. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

My Rating: 5+ stars. I will definitely be eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
