Since 1954, Twenty-Four Hours a Day has become a stable force in the recovery of many alcoholics throughout the world. With over nine million copies in print (the original text has been revised), this "little black book" offers daily thoughts, meditations, and prayers for living a clean and sober life. A spiritual resource with practical applications to fit our daily lives.

"For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision" is part of the Sanskrit proverb quoted at the beginning of the book which has become one of the basic building blocks for a life of sobriety. In addition to a thought, meditation and prayer for each day of the year, this handy, pocket-sized volume also contains the Serenity Prayer and the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is a simple, yet effective way to help us relate the Twelve Steps to everyday life and helps us find the power not to take that first drink each day.

At my very first AA meeting, a kind and supportive member presented me with this remarkable book.

Ever since then, I have made it a daily ritual to read from its pages. The words within have provided me with strength, guidance, and inspiration on my journey to recovery.

June is fast approaching, and I am filled with a sense of pride and gratitude as I will soon celebrate an incredible milestone - 7 years of sobriety. This achievement would not have been possible without the help and support of AA.

The fellowship, the meetings, the sharing of experiences - all of these have played a crucial role in my transformation. AA has become my second family, and I will forever be indebted to this organization for giving me my life back.

As I look forward to this upcoming celebration, I am also looking forward to many more years of sobriety and continued growth within the AA community.

In the year 2018, (for me!) this book's principles are outdated, just like those of all other 12-step peer-led support groups.

To be specific, if you are a person who requires strict faith in something while denying your codependency, then you will likely love this book and the "fellowship" it offers, while trashing my review.

I have tried 12-step groups twice and have found that the disease model, the concept of codependency, and the dependence on a higher power for addiction are not suitable for me.

However, when the need to attend a support group arises for me, I do enjoy Smart Recovery, DBSA (Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance), MHA (Mental Health America), and NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) support groups. These groups offer different approaches and perspectives that I find more beneficial and in line with my own beliefs and experiences.

It's important to note that everyone's journey to recovery is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. While 12-step groups have helped many people, they are not the only option available.

I encourage others to explore different support groups and find the ones that best suit their individual needs and preferences.

Helpful daily reflection is of utmost importance for my sobriety journey.

Every day, I take a moment to look back on my actions, thoughts, and emotions. I ask myself if I made choices that were in line with my commitment to sobriety.

I reflect on the challenges I faced and how I overcame them, or if I need to find better ways to deal with similar situations in the future.

This daily practice allows me to stay accountable to myself and notice any patterns or triggers that might lead me astray.

It also helps me to celebrate my progress and achievements, no matter how small they may seem.

By engaging in helpful daily reflection, I am able to stay focused on my sobriety journey and make positive changes in my life.

It gives me the strength and determination to keep moving forward, one day at a time.

This has been a primary morning reader for me for years and years.

One of the main reasons is the simple daily prayer it contains. The prayer is a beautiful way to start the day, centering oneself and connecting with a higher power. It provides a moment of stillness and reflection in the midst of a busy morning.

Another aspect that appeals to me is the author's orientation to the Oxford Group. The Oxford Group was a spiritual movement that emphasized personal transformation and the power of love and service. The author's connection to this group is evident in the book, as it is filled with inspiring stories and teachings that encourage readers to live a more purposeful and meaningful life.

Together, these elements make this morning reader a truly special and valuable resource for me, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a way to start their day on a positive and spiritual note.
