Stephen Edwin King was born the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of them. Other family members provided a small house in Durham and financial support. After Stephen's grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential facility for the mentally challenged.

Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He graduated in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. A draft board examination immediately post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet, and punctured eardrums.

He met Tabitha Spruce in the stacks of the Fogler Library at the University, where they both worked as students; they married in January of 1971. As Stephen was unable to find placement as a teacher immediately, the Kings lived on his earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry, and her student loan and savings, with an occasional boost from a short story sale to men's magazines.

Stephen made his first professional short story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men's magazines. Many were gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies.

In the fall of 1971, Stephen began teaching English at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.

A saga that builds up gradually, the beginning bored me. In fact, it took years for them to convince me to start it again... Fortunately, I picked it up! A total protagonist, one of those you don't forget, and an external and internal journey that makes you get more and more hooked on the story with each new page. A reference work. Now I see many inspirations of other authors in this saga.

This saga is like a hidden treasure chest that I almost missed. At first, the slow start made me lose interest. But later, when I gave it another chance, I was completely captivated. The protagonist is so vivid and engaging that he stays in my mind long after I've finished reading. The story not only takes the reader on an exciting adventure in the external world but also delves deep into the protagonist's inner self, making it a truly immersive experience.

As I read through the pages, I couldn't help but notice the influence this saga has had on other authors. It's clear that it has set a high standard and served as a source of inspiration for many. It's no wonder that it's considered a classic in the literary world. I'm so glad I decided to give it a second chance and discover the magic within.

The first half of this book is extremely interesting and its narration never wanes.

On the contrary, in the final chapters, a more boring atmosphere starts to be felt.

Personally, the ending leaves a lot to be desired to be the conclusion of such a great saga.

It seems that after the exciting build-up in the first part, the story loses some of its momentum towards the end.

The characters that were so engaging earlier on seem to lack the same depth and development in the later chapters.

The plot, which had been full of twists and turns, becomes a bit predictable and formulaic.

Overall, while the first half of the book is a great read, the second half fails to live up to the expectations set by the beginning.

It is a shame that such a promising start leads to a somewhat disappointing conclusion.

What a long journey it was to accompany Roland to the tower!! The story declines a bit until the last quarter of the book but it doesn't bore. After that, intense and dramatic moments are lived. The end I liked, it is appropriate and I expected something like that.

A very good book.

Regarding the series, I say: I loved it, and I say thank you.

Long days and pleasant nights.

Expanded version:

What an incredibly long journey it was to accompany Roland on his arduous path towards the tower!! The story, to be honest, seems to lose a bit of its momentum and excitement until we reach the last quarter of the book. However, it never truly bores the reader. In fact, it's as if it is biding its time, building up anticipation for what is to come. And come it does, with a vengeance! After that lull, we are plunged into a series of intense and highly dramatic moments that keep us on the edge of our seats. The end, for me, was a real delight. It was completely appropriate and in line with what I had been hoping for all along.

This is without a doubt a very good book. It has its flaws, but they are more than outweighed by its many strengths. The characters are well-developed, the world-building is rich and detailed, and the story itself is engaging and full of surprises.

Now, regarding the series, I have to say that I absolutely loved it. It has brought me countless hours of entertainment and has introduced me to a world that I will never forget. I am truly grateful to the author for creating such a wonderful and captivating series.

Here's to many more long days and pleasant nights spent lost in the pages of this amazing series!

I have completed the last, eighth book, and proudly, I can state that this is the longest series that I have ever read.

But considering the 34 years that King needed to finish it, I would say that he did his best. Each and every story was exciting and dynamic, and I read the books with ease and interest.

The series has taken me on a remarkable journey through different worlds and characters, and I have become deeply invested in their fates.

It's not just about the length of the series, but also the quality of the writing and the depth of the storytelling.

Stephen King has truly outdone himself with this work, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to experience it.

Overall, it has been a wonderful reading experience, and I will surely remember these books for a long time to come.

Here is how Roland Deschain, the Gunslinger, reached it.

How it all began: "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." Seven volumes later, the Gunslinger crosses the field of roses to meet his fate, his ka.

The story of his journey is a tale of love, death, friendships, and betrayals, a story of the predetermined and the choice.

As you follow Roland and his ka-tet, composed of a drug-addicted youth, a dark-skinned legless woman, a teenager, and a talking animal that resembles a dog, through the convolutions of the time-space cosmos of Stephen King, you will learn a lot about America - about its myths, pains, and ideals.

You will get to know images that are so alive, so unique and vividly outlined, as if they were (and are) a real part of your life.

The author will share with you what it means to be nineteen, how "true" Stephen King is, who "meets" his heroes in the novel, what the creator thinks about the question - the path or the goal.

On the way to the Dark Tower, you will uncover what moves the hand of the gunslinger.

The "Dark Tower" series is the most ambitious and epic work of Stephen King. Motifs and characters from it can be found in all of his works.

This is a very good book, and it is also a very good saga.

Although for me, the ending is not quite appropriate. However, it is still highly recommendable.

The story within the book is engaging and captivating, taking the reader on a thrilling adventure.

The characters are well-developed and come to life on the pages.

The author has done a great job of creating a vivid and immersive world.

Despite the slightly disappointing ending, the overall quality of the book and the saga is outstanding.

It offers readers an escape into a different realm and provides hours of entertainment.

Whether you are a fan of the genre or simply looking for a good read, this book and saga are definitely worth checking out.

You will not be disappointed.
