This was truly a remarkable and satisfying conclusion to a captivating story.

Matthew not only managed to break Rachel out of jail, but he also accomplished a series of extraordinary feats. He bravely killed Jack One-Eye, the fearsome monster bear. He discovered the long-hidden treasure and made amicable friendships with the neighboring Indians. Additionally, he successfully found and exposed the murderer, and retrieved Magistrate Woodword's precious gold-threaded waistcoat just in time for the magistrate's burial.

Matthew is indeed an extraordinary young man. He and Mrs. Nettles worked together to help Rachel escape, which was no easy task for Matt as he had to leave Issac, who he knew was on the verge of death. Despite spending most of his time in bed, Issac Woodward's character played a significant role in this novel.

Matthew was certain that he was doing the right thing and knew that he couldn't live with himself if he didn't save Rachel, whom he believed to be innocent. They journeyed down into the Florida territory, where they were attacked by Jack One-Eye. Unbeknownst to them, the Indians were also tracking the bear as it was a menace to their tribe. When Matthew dealt the bear a fatal blow, he became a hero in the eyes of the Indians. And when the bear almost killed him while he was saving Rachel, they took him to their Medicine Man.

The Medicine Man managed to save Matthew and showed him what had become of Shawcombe, the inn owner and general scumbag. That scene was particularly gruesome, as expected from McCammon. The Indians then returned Matt and Rachel to Fount Royal, and Matthew once again put himself in great danger to expose the murderer, Alan Johnstone, the schoolmaster. This act justified his efforts in saving Rachel from the flames.

Bidwell even gave her all the jewels that were recovered from the pond. She decided to stay in the town, pick up the pieces of her life, and move back into her home. She even adopted a dog that had a penchant for killing rats. Magistrate Woodward made Matthew promise that he would go to Manhattan to seek out a position with a former colleague. It was kind of him to take care of Matthew before his passing.

This was a truly engaging and well-written story. I have a strong feeling that Matthew will make a return in the future, and his adventures, both as a law professional and as a solver of mysteries, will continue to unfold.

Words simply cannot begin to describe the masterful conclusion to the beginning of such a harrowing, mysterious, and nail-biting saga.

It was a conclusion that left audiences on the edge of their seats, gasping in disbelief and awe. The story had been building up to this moment, with every twist and turn adding to the tension and excitement.

The characters had been developed so well that we felt as if we knew them personally, and we were invested in their fates. The conclusion tied up all the loose ends in a way that was both satisfying and unexpected, leaving us with a sense of closure and yet still hungry for more.

It was a masterclass in storytelling, and a testament to the skill and creativity of the author. We can only wait with bated breath to see what comes next in this amazing saga.

Rachel Howarth is strange, beautiful, and brave - and has been condemned as a witch. At least by the town of Fount Royal. Now Judge Woodward and his court clerk Matthe Corbett are supposed to conduct a witch trial against her.

There are occult evidence from her house and witnesses report of unspeakable things that they have observed her doing. Then the judge also falls ill and Matthew fights for what he believes to be the truth. Does witchcraft really exist? At least the struggle between good and evil is real...

I still don't understand why in the German translation two books were made out of it. The first part ends completely unsatisfactorily and now I really found it difficult to find my way around in the story, since I no longer remember the development and the details that make up each individual and explain the relationships in detail. As a result, I lacked depth and connections.

However, there are all the more surprises. The whole town is full of deceptions, everyone seems to be hiding something or pursuing their own goals, and Rachel is perfect as a scapegoat. Matthew gathers questions, there are hardly any answers and I followed details spellbound in places to gather clues. And while he tries to connect the loose ends, his thoughts are confused, his mind is fascinating, but I had no idea how it all becomes clear to him.

There were almost too many conflicts. Besides the obvious questions - why would someone want to create a witch? how can the witnesses and evidence be explained? - there are also the murders, the fires, the surveyor, the treasure, the witch trial, witness statements and evidence.

There were some longueurs. The story has been a bit drawn out by the detailed vivid description, although I actually liked that. Together with the very special characters, the whole thing really comes to life. From the individual characters to the state of the sick judge and the dubious methods of the doctor, I had pictures in my head of everything. And the resolution of the inexplicable things I really liked, extremely but authentic.

But when Matthew then does exactly what I didn't want towards the end, it was the best thing that could have happened to the story and really gripped me. Nawpapay was too funny, just like the randomly inserted scenes, such as when he tells Bidwell his opinion and descriptions of "physical intimacy". I had to laugh out loud several times.

I liked Matthew's development, even though I never really understood his attraction to Rachel. But like all the little flaws here, it fits when you get into the story. And the end promises an exciting continuation.

Overall, there are large parts to which I would have given 2 stars and parts that deserve 4 stars.

The second part couldn't draw me in as much as part one. McCommon failed to maintain the atmosphere that prevailed in part one.

However, the writing style still appealed to me a great deal and I also thought the resolution was okay.

Despite the slight letdown in the second part, I will definitely continue following the series. I really like Matthew. He is an interesting character with a lot of potential. I'm curious to see how his story will unfold in the upcoming parts.

I hope that McCommon can bring back the magic of part one and make the subsequent installments even more engaging. Overall, I'm still looking forward to seeing what else this series has in store for me.

The Carolinas, 1699. The newly established town of Fount Royal is plagued by a series of disasters - murders, arsons, failed crops, and illness. In a state of desperation, the citizens point their fingers at Rachel Howarth and accuse her of witchcraft. Magistrate Isaac Woodward and his clerk Matthew Corbett arrive to oversee the trial and decide Rachel's fate. However, Matthew quickly realizes that there is something far more menacing than witchcraft lurking in Fount Royal. He puts everything on the line to solve the mystery and exonerate Rachel.

The writing in “Speaks the Nightbird” is of good quality. In fact, it exceeds what one might expect from a mainstream genre fiction book. Nevertheless, all the aspects I liked were offset by those I disliked.

The characters are vivid and well-developed, with unique personalities and solid backstories. However, almost every character is completely unbalanced. Insanity, in various forms, runs wild throughout the book, to the extent that it becomes unbelievable.

There are detailed descriptions of everything - clothing, cuisine, weather, landscape, furniture, tools, and so on. While this makes for a visually engaging read, it also becomes tiresome and fails to add a sense of time to the story. Additionally, there is an excessive amount of vulgarity and crudity, which bothered me and gave the impression that this was a more modern story. I seldom felt as if I was reading about 1699.

As the book progresses, the plot twists become increasingly outlandish. When the mystery is finally solved and the motive and method are revealed, I am left dumbfounded by how absurd it is. Pirate treasure and hypnotism? Are you serious? I read over 900 pages for that ridiculous conclusion? I feel thoroughly cheated.

From the moment I first encountered it, I was captivated by its charm and allure.

The details, the colors, the way it made me feel - everything was just perfect.

It was like a magical escape from the ordinary, a place where I could let go of all my worries and simply沉浸 in the beauty and wonder of it all.

I will always cherish this memory and look forward to the next time I can experience it again.

Loved it!
