Before reading this book, one must first read the first part! Matthew is convinced of the witch's innocence. There is one or perhaps even more murderers in the city. Is the murderer or murderers in league with the devil? Or has Rachel really hexed him? This is an extremely exciting continuation of the story, with gruesome scenes and a great ending. I am truly enthusiastic about the Matthew Corbett series and will definitely continue reading this series!
The story of Matthew Corbett continues to unfold in a thrilling manner. The mystery surrounding the murders deepens, leaving the reader on the edge of their seat. The description of the gruesome scenes adds to the overall atmosphere of the book, making it a truly engaging read. The question of whether the murderer is in league with the devil or if Rachel has indeed hexed Matthew keeps the reader guessing until the very end. The great ending ties up all the loose ends and leaves the reader satisfied, yet eager for more. The Matthew Corbett series is a must-read for fans of mystery and thriller novels.
Okay, so on Goodreads, 5 stars is equivalent to "It was amazing". Considering the first book of "Speaks the Nightbird" (for which I gave 4 stars), I truly felt that the story and writing as a whole merited 4.5 stars. I haven't read a book as long as this one (just over 400 pages) in such a short period for quite a while.
This second book also flew by for me, and the fast-paced plot definitely had me eagerly anticipating every page turn. McCammon concludes things very nicely in the end, not in a way that seemed convenient or forced. This book served as an excellent reminder of why I loved reading his books so much when I was younger.
"Nightbird" maintained my interest, and more importantly, I became invested in the characters. I have a soft spot for sad endings. Although I can't say this book necessarily has one, it does have its fair share of passages that evoke emotions. On a completely unrelated note, I did seem to have a slight allergic reaction to some of the pages near the end. What kind of paper are they using these days?!?
Having just purchased the third installment, I find myself reading this once more, as it has been quite some time since my last encounter. It is truly amazing how, within just a few pages, one is effortlessly transported back in time to the 17th Century. The characters spring to life in my mind, and I quickly remember and form associations with them. I am eagerly looking forward to reaching the end of this captivating story, once again.
Now, just a couple of days later, I have completed the book. I must admit that I enjoyed it even more than the first time around. The vivid descriptions, engaging plot, and well-developed characters all contributed to making this a truly unforgettable reading experience. I can't wait to see what the author has in store for us in the next installment.
This book absolutely seamlessly connects to the end of Book 1. As a reader, I was immediately right in the middle of it and could hardly put my Kindle down. After the abrupt end of the first book, I bought the second part as an eBook - simply because I had to continue reading right away. It was exciting, secrets were revealed, and the unpredictable twists really entertained me well. Robert McCammon has a great, atmospheric writing style. Since I really liked Matthew Corbett, of course I will follow and read the entire series!
