Leggetelo!

The novel Satyricon, of which only 10 - 12% of the original text has been preserved, is one of the first truly authentic works of fiction. It emerged during a period characterized by a profound crisis in moral, social, and religious values.

The events described with a great deal of humor in this fictional work take place in brothels, taverns, or on the streets, by no means on the battlefield or in palaces. The gods do not act properly. Petronius allows the semi-intellectuals, the parvenus, the uneducated freedmen who have become rich overnight, the megalomaniacs to the point of total stupidity, the corrupt and the corrupters to speak. These anti-heroes who are constantly seeking means of subsistence or enrichment, dimly perceiving the need for a new way of life.

It is easy to imagine that excess was what led to the downfall of this society, when the leaders were too busy being drunk all the time or maintaining sexual relations with slaves. It was not the best time to be a woman... or a slave. This work provides a vivid and satirical picture of the decadence and moral decay of that era, making it a valuable piece of literature for understanding the social and cultural context of the time.

I read this for a class on the Roman Empire.

I truly enjoyed certain parts of it. For instance, the dinner party with Trimalchio was quite fascinating, filled with vivid descriptions and a sense of extravagance.

The scene in the art gallery was also captivating, painting a detailed picture of the Roman art and culture.

However, I had minimal interest in a significant portion of the rest.

Often credited as being the first western novel, it presents an odd mix.

There are some continuing stories that keep the reader engaged to an extent, but then there are lengthy sections of poetry which, while perhaps beautiful in their own right, disrupted the flow for me.

At one point, there is even an epic poem focused on Julius Caesar and the civil war.

This made the overall reading experience a bit disjointed.

Nevertheless, it is an important piece of literature that provides valuable insights into the Roman Empire.

Despite my mixed feelings, I can appreciate its historical significance and the unique perspective it offers on that ancient civilization.

I had not delved into the classical studies.

By chance, I discovered this book through a citation among the many on an online citation website. It was written: "He joined the majority." The author was a certain Petronius Arbiter. I had never heard of him. And yet, it was so profound. So I picked it up. A good, yes, Einaudi edition. Or, at least, the editor seems to understand it.

And that's how I found myself longing from here until the night of time for the cinematic adaptation produced by Sion Sono of a novel that tells of the crazy and unlucky sex life of Encolpius, a young Campanian, who in his amorous pursuit of the ephebe Giton manages, at the same time, to describe, in a humor so surreal and (post)modern as to seem a miracle, and among other things with an attention to details and their scenic continuity unknown to almost all contemporary writers, the customs of Late Rome, wonderfully decadent, so much so that one thinks that the actors in the comedy staged by Petronius end up being all of us, and that the first novel in the history of man is ultimately also the last.

And I haven't been able to find the citation within the book. I will have to reread it.

For the longest time, I have always harbored a deep wish that we could have the missing books of the Annals. Reading through all these fragmentary or incomplete sources, nothing could possibly override my intense desire to know what Tacitus had to say about Caligula. Today, I am adding yet another source that I truly wish was more complete: the Satyricon. It is incredibly frustrating to read this work and experience such significant leaps in the story due to the highly fragmentary nature of its parts. I find myself keenly interested in delving deeper into the bumbling Encolpius and his misadventures.

The Satyricon is, by far, the most extraordinarily bizarre piece that I have ever come across in the Roman world.

This piece is profoundly sexual, perhaps even the most sexual one that I have read from the Roman world (up until now).

More than any other Roman work that I have read, I have a distinct feeling that I am unable to fully appreciate this piece because it is in translation. The editor has made an attempt and has indeed helped to alleviate some of the loss in translation meaning, but I simply cannot get rid of the sense that I am missing otherwise crucial elements. Sexual jokes can be humorous regardless of the language, but the poetry, puns, and witticisms did not have as much of an impact on me as they理应 have. This is especially true for the Civil War poem. Although we are informed that this is a poor rendition of Lucan, it simply cannot be fully appreciated in English.

Oh well, just another reason to keep persevering in learning Latin.

I vividly remember hating this book during my high school days. The reason was simple: it caused me to fail my Latin class. At that time, I had no interest in it whatsoever and regarded it as a burden.

However, things have changed. Now, when I read it on my own terms for my thesis, I am truly shocked. I never expected that I would have to delve into this ancient Roman smut. But as I read it in Latin, a strange thing happened. I found it absolutely hilarious.

The vivid descriptions and the unique style of the ancient Roman writing have a certain charm that I never noticed before. It's as if I have discovered a new world through this book. Although it was once my nemesis, now it has become an important source of inspiration for my research.

This took forever to get through because I painstakingly read all the notes and footnotes.

After that, I read the introduction. A full review is coming. I rate it 4 stars. Maybe it could even be 5. It's very naughty.

I have gotten out of the habit of writing detailed reviews, but I usually noted down how many stars I would give.

In 2024, I'll go back into the reviews and try to rectify this situation. However, at the moment, I'm injured and just going to do the star ratings and copy and paste this explanation.

Happy Reading! I hope you all enjoy the books as much as I do, despite my current inability to provide in-depth reviews. I look forward to being able to give more detailed feedback in the future.

Multilevel marketing (MLM) has become a widely discussed topic in recent years. MLM characters play a crucial role in this business model. They are often the ones who promote and sell the products or services offered by the MLM company.

MLM characters can take on various forms. Some are highly successful and charismatic individuals who are able to attract a large number of followers. They use their skills and influence to build teams and generate sales. Others may be less experienced but are still eager to participate in the MLM opportunity.

However, the world of MLM is not without controversy. Some critics argue that MLM characters are often involved in unethical practices such as false advertising, high-pressure sales tactics, and pyramid schemes. These practices can cause financial harm to consumers and damage the reputation of the MLM industry as a whole.

In conclusion, while MLM characters can have a significant impact on the success of an MLM business, it is important to approach this industry with caution. Consumers should do their research and be aware of the potential risks involved before getting involved with any MLM opportunity.

Second read and it just keeps getting better.

I find myself completely immersed in the story once again. The details that I might have missed the first time around now stand out, adding new layers of depth and understanding.

I can't help but think about how much I want to see the movie again. The visual representation of the story brings a whole new dimension to it.

Oh, Giton. So sexy. His character is so alluring and mysterious. I can't get him out of my mind.

I wonder what adventures he will have in the next installment of the story.

Overall, this second read has been an absolute delight. It has reignited my passion for the story and left me eagerly anticipating more.

Fragmentos de textos que forman una trama reconocible aunque inconclusa.

They have a common style and a high probability of belonging to the era of Emperor Nero (1st century AD), so they are attributed to Gaius Petronius Arbiter, who was named "arbiter elegantiarum" by Nero himself due to his exquisite refinement at court, as depicted by Henryk Sienkiewicz in the beautiful Quo Vadis, not to mention, of course, the descriptions by Plutarch and Tacitus.

The protagonists are Encolpio, his adolescent friend Gitón, and Ascilto, Encolpio's love rival. In the fragments, the plot begins near Naples, where Gitón, Encolpio's friend and lover, reports that he has suffered violence from Ascilto, who, as a result, has become infatuated with Gitón and starts vehemently disputing his favors with Encolpio.

And since the sweet Gitón has a notable success among men, there is no shortage of sorrows for Encolpio. After falling into the hands of a woman who sought to enslave them, the three must flee and embark on a ship where they fall into the hands of their enemies, but a storm "rescues" them and they end up arriving as shipwrecked in Crotona, where Encolpio changes his name and decides to cure his sexual impotence towards women, even with the help of witchcraft.

In that plot, Petronio weaves beautiful speculations about the decline of oratory and infant education; the tricks of thieves and brothels reached through deceptions; the semi-slavery to which a libertine aristocrat subjects them under the pretext of a sacrilege and from which they manage to escape by the skin of their teeth, not before attending the banquet of Trimalchio, a new rich man who gets drunk while philosophizing about the brevity of life and creates unpleasant scenes with his wife, while the wine flows on the table, an eccentric dish is prepared that illustrates the twelve zodiac signs through its delicacies, and the diners tell in turn a series of paranormal stories; the unsparing, rather quite humorous, description of sexual scenes; the mockery of poets through Eumolpo, who was often stoned because of his irritating speaking in verse and who, when they are shipwrecked and arrive in Crotona, successfully deceives the locals, dedicated to hunting for property owners without heirs, since to grant his supposed goods he sets the condition that once he dies they must eat his corpse...

In short, the truth is that El satiricón made me laugh out loud at times, and the only thing I regret is that the story was interrupted so abruptly.
