Knowing about the life of Anais Nin, I can only regard this work as utter fiction. Her adolescent and arrogant delusions are at times amusing, other times embarrassing. Yet there is something interesting that emerges from her story. Despite her flaws and the perhaps exaggerated nature of her accounts, there is a certain charm and allure. Her exploration of her own desires and emotions, though often self-indulgent, also offers a unique perspective. It makes one wonder about the boundaries between truth and fiction in our own lives. Do we all have our own Anais Nin-like delusions that we hold onto? And perhaps more importantly, can we learn from her experiences and use them to better understand ourselves? The work, while not entirely believable, still manages to engage and provoke thought.

The thing about Anais Nin's diaries is truly fascinating.

They are all sourced from a much larger body of work - namely, her life-long diaries. Each volume is merely an excerpt, and as a result, it's not as if one volume really stands out thematically from the others to a great extent.

From a history and politics perspective, in this particular volume, the situation in Europe is worsening, and World War Two is on the verge of starting. Nin is deeply involved in the cafe and salon culture, befriending various artists, reading manuscripts, and still financially supporting Henry Miller, among other things.

She is beginning to develop a keen interest in psychology and analysis, and I believe this is the volume where she starts her analysis with Dr. Otto Rank.

When I informed Jared that I was reading these books, he was rather critical. He claimed he didn't like them because they seemed to be all about the famous people Anais Nin knew, as if she was name-dropping and reveling in how glamorous her star-studded life was.

Now, seventy years on, with many of the events and people Nin mentions in her diaries having been placed in an official historical context, I can understand that perspective. However, the thing is, we are currently living in our own historical context.

We simply don't know how it will all unfold in seventy years since none of us has a time machine. It's entirely possible that I am friends with someone who could go on to be a culturally significant writer, theorist, filmmaker, or something else. Even if it's in a small way.

I write about the people I know in my diaries, the things they do, and the projects I admire, and so on. Why not? That's what's on my mind.

Nin had no way of predicting which of her friends would become famous. And sometimes she dedicated more writing to those who labored in obscurity than to the people who are now really well-known.

I guess a lot of people find her diaries interesting to read because they are filled with famous people, artists, events, and historical moments, and that's okay. But one has to consider that she probably didn't truly realize what she was recording while she was living it. It was just a matter of luck and circumstance, wasn't it?

I have been guilty of idealization. I have been guilty of many things.

But I have not been guilty of indifference. I am guilty of living too seriously and too profoundly.

However, I am not guilty of living superficially.

My pursuit of idealization has led me to strive for the best in everything. I have been committed to making a difference and leaving a positive impact.

Taking life seriously and thinking deeply have allowed me to understand the true meaning and value of things.

I am not content with a shallow existence. I渴望 to explore the depths of life and experience its fullness.

Although I may have made mistakes along the way, I have never lost sight of my goals and values.

I will continue to live with purpose and passion, always striving to be a better person.

Reading Anais Nin has proven to be a truly physical experience, completely different from anything I have ever felt for a first book.

The materiality of the book, the possibility of interacting with it on various levels - touching it, holding it in one's hands, underlining it - has been as important as the emotional and spiritual effects that Nin's words have left on me.

I always think I know what to expect when I engage with her writing, I always think I am prepared for the impact, but every time it is as if it is the first time; every time the vortex of her life, her thoughts, her words, captures me and sweeps me away without leaving me a way out.

One cannot escape oneself, even when a part of us emerges from the pages and words of others, even when the life that is being described takes on the prodigious and brilliant features of Anais Nin, capable of absorbing her own existence until the last drop, until the last instant:

"I am one of the few who today can say: I loved every day as if the one I loved were about to die. As if I were about to die tomorrow."
