Another aspect that detracts from this series, starting with the second book, is the substantial amount of erotica within the text. My 12-year-old was reading the first one with me, but unfortunately, I cannot allow him to continue due to this. While Ayla's first rites was an appropriate place to include some descriptive sex, the remainder becomes repetitively bothersome and gratuitous at this stage. We understand, Jean.

And finally, an annoyance is that Ayla seems to be an absolute genius, single-handedly making thousands of years' worth of discoveries in just a few short years. Although they are useful in advancing the story and maintaining interest, you really have to suspend your disbelief to accept them.
