This is truly my "holy grail" (and I'm not making a play on words here) of Buddhist books.

It holds a permanent and special position right on my night table.

I have read it from cover to cover at least three times.

Each time I pick it up, I discover new insights and gain a deeper understanding of the Buddhist teachings.

The words within its pages seem to have a magical quality that draws me in and helps me find peace and tranquility in my busy life.

The contents of this book are firmly rooted in a dogmatic view of Buddhist teachings. Rebirth is presented as an established fact, enlightenment as absolute and unchanging, and the Buddha's words as infallible. This goes on and on, becoming rather tiresome. While some of the individual teachings may have isolated benefits, overall, the book serves as propaganda for excessive levels of self-delusion and blind faith. It's a huge disappointment after the excellent "Mindfulness in Plain English".


There's not much that distinguishes this book from others I've read on the eightfold path, except for its consistent attempt to pass off delusion as fact through "logic" that becomes obviously false as soon as you let go of the delusion that it's reasonable to prove the truth of one teaching by assuming the truth of another or by assuming the Buddha was without error and that the current teachings are his exact words. Both of these assumptions are, of course, complete nonsense.


Perhaps the most directly harmful aspect of the book is its insistence that we should search for suffering in every moment. It claims that mindfulness is about observing our suffering and that we will always find it until we reach Nibbana (and, as described in this book, there's no rational basis to believe such a thing exists). Well, you know what happens when you set your mind to finding something? That's right. Seek and you will find. If you make the goal of your mindfulness to find suffering, you'll have plenty of it to discover. This teaching completely contradicts everything I've read about psychology and all of my personal experience. Please don't do this. Please don't equate progress on the path to happiness with a constant search for your own ever-present suffering. If you do that, then ever-present suffering is indeed what you're most likely to find.

Although there were some parts that I personally found to be a bit monotonous or perhaps not as clear as they could have been, overall, this is by far the best guide that I have come across for beginners.
