Live right. Feel right.

This simple yet profound statement holds the key to a fulfilling life. When we live right, we make choices that are in line with our values and principles. We take care of our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. We eat healthy, exercise regularly, and get enough rest. We also strive to build positive relationships with others and contribute to our communities.

When we live right, we feel right. We experience a sense of inner peace and contentment. We are confident in ourselves and our abilities. We are able to face challenges and difficulties with courage and resilience. We know that we are living a life that is meaningful and purposeful.

So, let us all strive to live right and feel right. Let us make choices that will bring us happiness and fulfillment. Let us be the best versions of ourselves and make a positive impact on the world around us.

A truly delightful book indeed.

I was pleasantly surprised to find it eminently practical and highly understandable. As I delved into the pages of this book, I had the great fortune of working with a mentor. Even on my own, I could clearly grasp the concepts presented within. However, my mentor's guidance further enhanced my experience.

Until now, I had been completely unaware of some of the critical holes in my practice. But having painstakingly worked through the book, I have managed to cultivate more skill. I have achieved a greater sense of calm and stillness within myself. Moreover, I have become a more ethical and peaceful person.

I am truly grateful to the author for penning such a wonderful and life-changing book. It has had a profound impact on my personal and professional growth. I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to improve themselves and their practice.

I truly had a great liking for the discussion regarding the diverse precepts. It was fascinating to explore the different rules and guidelines that exist.

Moreover, the concept of wholesomeness also caught my attention. The idea of living a life that is pure, good, and free from negative influences is indeed very appealing.

However, as a Catholic who firmly believes in the existence of an immortal soul, I understand that I may never be able to completely rid myself of all the fetters. The teachings and beliefs of my religion have a profound impact on my life and actions.

Nonetheless, I hold the hope that perhaps I can gradually ditch the other fetters that hold me back. Maybe I can work towards freeing myself from the unnecessary constraints and limitations that I have imposed upon myself.

It is a journey of self-discovery and growth, and I am determined to make progress along the way.

A truly marvellous exposition of the four noble truths and the noble eightfold path awaits you. It is presented in simple language, making it easily understandable to a lay person. Gone is the self-importance and high-handedness often found in spiritual literature.

The Buddha's path is not something imposed on us but rather a path for us to discover on our own. By following it, we can strive for a happier life and perhaps even reach eventual enlightenment. You may or may not agree with its tenets, but one thing is certain - the path offers a framework of ethical living and self-development that is on par with the Stoics, the Epicureans, and other renowned philosophical schools of thought.

Definitely recommended for everyone who is seriously interested in practising Buddhism. It provides valuable insights and guidance that can help us navigate the challenges of life and find inner peace and fulfillment.

My introduction to the 8 fold path of Buddhism and how it is practiced in real life.

Buddhism's 8 fold path is a profound and comprehensive guide. It consists of right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.

In real life, the practice of the 8 fold path begins with cultivating a right view, which involves understanding the nature of reality and the causes of suffering. Right intention drives us to act with kindness, compassion, and non-violence. Right speech encourages us to speak truthfully, gently, and usefully. Right action means engaging in behaviors that are ethical and beneficial to ourselves and others. Right livelihood ensures that we earn a living in a way that is in line with Buddhist principles. Right effort helps us to overcome negative thoughts and emotions and develop positive qualities. Right mindfulness allows us to be fully present in the moment and aware of our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Finally, right concentration helps us to focus our minds and achieve a state of inner peace and clarity.

I think this is a great start for learning about Buddhist beliefs before diving into real primary material. It provides a practical framework for living a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

Practical, wonderful - an in-depth but simple look at the Buddha's teachings about the Noble 8 Fold Path.

The Noble 8 Fold Path is the way to end suffering and reach enlightenment, or some stage along the way.

I've been a Buddhist practitioner (the first stage!) for 12 years, and this was right up my alley.

The book provides a detailed exploration of each aspect of the path, making it accessible even to those new to Buddhism.

The author's explanations are clear and engaging, and I found myself easily able to apply the teachings to my daily life.

Can't wait to read this again, and to read other books the author recommends.

Bhante Gunaratana is truly the best. His wisdom and insights shine through in every page, and I feel privileged to have come across his work.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Buddhism or in finding a way to end suffering and find inner peace.

I made a purchasing blunder and bought the wrong book. It happens, right? The book I initially intended to buy was Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante as well. I was shopping online, and since each book had a similar leaf on the cover, I accidentally clicked on the wrong one. At first, I was quite disappointed and even thought about suing someone (alright, maybe not that seriously). But I was indeed let down.

However, as I delved into Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness, my disappointment vanished quickly. This is an outstanding book. It's not only great for Buddhists but also for spiritual seekers of all kinds and anyone渴望 to improve their lives.

Bhante, who was born in Sri Lanka (I'm not really on a first-name basis with him; I just don't want to type Bhante Henepola Gunaratana repeatedly!), is an ordained Buddhist monk. He is the real deal. What's amazing is that this book is written in the simplest and most straightforward English. His writing style could even be described as "folksy." It's easy to understand (hey, I'm a golfer, and if I can get it, anyone can), insightful, and overall very helpful.

Now, I know you might be thinking of that "Clap along if you know what happiness is to you" song, but Bhante offers a much more practical and realistic path to happiness. And who doesn't want to be happier? (That's a rhetorical question.) Indeed, the book is about finding happiness, and the eight steps it presents demonstrate how to achieve it.

Remember the "folksy" tone I mentioned earlier? Well, in some parts, there is a folksy wisdom that is even reminiscent of Will Rogers. For example:
There's an old story about a man who wanted to cover the whole earth with leather so he could walk more comfortably. He would have found it much easier to make a pair of sandals. Similarly, instead of trying to control the world to make yourself happy, work to reduce your psychic irritants.

Psychic irritants. I don't know about you, but I've definitely had my fair share of them lately.

The eight steps are based on Buddha's Eightfold Path and include skillful understanding, skillful thinking, skillful speech, skillful action, skillful livelihood, skillful effort, skillful mindfulness, and skillful concentration. And remember, these are the eight "mindful" steps to happiness, so there is a focus on consciousness, awareness, and insight, especially as gained from meditation.

A significant emphasis is placed on living in the present moment and not fighting against reality. Bhante writes:
Pain sensations are usually manageable. Dissatisfaction with "what is" is more profound and harder to overcome.

This is serious Buddhism. Bhante may write with ease and comfort, but he is still a deeply committed Buddhist. Some of his teachings (remember, I'm a golfer) are a bit difficult to understand, such as the whole concept of "non-self," but most of it provides a clear window into the world of mindfulness.

He discusses a wide range of topics, from dealing with anger and being compassionate to an excellent passage on handling fear. And it's all set against the backdrop of mindfulness.

This book is about improving your life and achieving concrete results. He writes:
As our practice of mindfulness meditation deepens, we may develop so much calm and patience that a previously unacceptable situation becomes no problem...

I recently experienced some very unfair treatment from a major ebook distributor. When I pleaded my case with them, all I received were form letter responses, including a saccharine: "I can understand your disappointment..." But Bhante tells a story of a monk who visited a rich man's house for seven consecutive years hoping to receive alms but received nothing. One day, the mistress of the house came out and yelled at him to go away. The next day, the monk returned and told the rich man that he had received something from the house. When the rich man checked and found that the monk had received nothing, he accused the monk of being a liar and a trickster. The monk replied:
"Sir, I came to your beautiful house for seven years and received nothing. But yesterday, one kind lady came out and said, 'Go away. We have nothing to give you.' That was what I received from your house."

The end of the story is that the owner is embarrassed by his stinginess, and the monk is rewarded for his determination, his skillful effort to maintain patience, and his positive state of mind.

This story really helped me deal with the injustice I've been feeling regarding my situation with the ebook distributor. It provided concrete help.

Finally, Bhante is 100% for people, and that comes through in his writing. Oh, I don't agree with all of his teachings, but I am truly impressed with Bhante as a person. He believes that the eight steps to happiness can genuinely help people, and he spreads the word with a skillful and mindful enthusiasm.

This is a truly remarkable book that combines practicality and beauty. It is designed to guide any ordinary person, a lay practitioner, on how to adhere to the Buddha's Eightfold Path in their daily lives.

The author, Bhante G, has done an excellent job of presenting the teachings in a clear and accessible manner. The book is filled with numerous practical examples that make it easy for readers to understand and apply the principles. What sets this book apart is the scarcity of off-topic parables, which some Buddhist texts are often prone to.

Bhante G's approach is refreshing and engaging. He manages to bring the ancient wisdom of the Buddha to life in a way that is relevant and applicable to modern-day living. Whether you are new to Buddhism or have been practicing for a while, this book is sure to provide valuable insights and inspiration. It truly rocks the house and is a must-read for anyone interested in following the Buddha's path.

A great deal of excellent information is presented here, yet there is simply an overabundance of it. It encounters the Buddhist issue of interminable lists, such as hindrances, objects of the mind, and so on. The sheer volume of data it provides is overwhelming, leaving one at a loss as to where to commence.

Perhaps, if each chapter were to be developed into a full-fledged book that one could dedicate a year to studying and working on, it would prove to be far more useful. This way, the reader would have the opportunity to delve deeply into each topic and truly absorb the wealth of knowledge contained within.

As it stands, the current format may be a bit too much to handle all at once, and some readers may become frustrated or discouraged. However, with a bit of restructuring and expansion, this could potentially be an invaluable resource for those interested in the subject matter.
