The story begins when a second wife decides to sell a cottage left to her by her husband. Naturally, the family has their own opinions about the decision, which lends all sorts of conflict. Selina, the stepdaughter, is unlikeable, but I felt a little sorry for her because nobody was on her side. A little more compassion would have improved the story, I think.
That said, it's the subplot, the love story involving a young couple, and the cottage that made this book special for me. I liked the characters and found their story romantic and believable, despite being far-fetched.
I've read this book and listened to the audiobook. I love its atmosphere, and I find the characters very believable. Sometimes I wish they were sweeter, but I sometimes wish real-life folks were sweeter, too. It is a very English book, so it might not appeal to North Americans, but having lived for several years in the UK, I loved it.
