I read this as part of the women’s fiction genre study at work.

I found the author in a NoveList readalike search for either Marisa de los Santos or Sarah Addison Allen.

This likely wasn’t the best book to get a sense of the author’s writing style. However, this book was of interest because it’s part of a series meant to appeal to new/reluctant adult readers. It is similar to the hi-lo books I was familiar with when ordering books for youth services.

This is a very fast read and intentionally does not have a lot of background info or development.

The main character is the focus. She is recently divorced and is trying to stand up for herself.

Her love of ice cream leads her to meet the ice cream truck driver.

Perhaps their encounter will bring some unexpected changes and opportunities for her.

Although the story may lack depth in some aspects, it still manages to engage the reader with its simple yet relatable plot.

It shows how even in the simplest of situations, there can be the potential for growth and new beginnings.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read that provided a quick escape into the world of the main character.

Ms. Ahern should probably take this book and rewrite it into a full 400-page novel book.

This would allow her to explore the story and characters in much greater depth. She could add more details, develop the plot further, and create a more immersive reading experience for her audience.

By expanding the book to 400 pages, Ms. Ahern would have more room to flesh out the backstories of the characters, add subplots, and build suspense. She could also explore different themes and ideas, making the book more thought-provoking and engaging.

In addition, a 400-page novel would give Ms. Ahern more opportunities to showcase her writing skills. She could use more descriptive language, create more complex sentence structures, and develop a unique writing style that would set her book apart from others.

Overall, rewriting this book into a full 400-page novel would be a great opportunity for Ms. Ahern to take her story to the next level and create a truly memorable work of fiction.

To be perfectly honest,

this book truly caught my eye while I was at the library. It was because of the ice cream on the cover. Haha, never go to the library when you're snackish, or maybe I should, because this was a great little read.

I have my hands tied not to go into too much detail due to this being a short book. Otherwise, I would give away the whole thing. So here is my condensed, but hopefully helpful view.

Emelda, the main character of this book, is absolutely amazing. She is someone I could see myself quickly making friends with! She is overweight and very much down on her luck in love, in her friendships, and also in her family life. However, through all this, she finally decides enough is enough and starts doing things to try and change her situations all the way around. Every little bit helps, and finally finding support can help too, if she ever finds that.

I think the reason I loved this book the most is because I could relate to Emelda completely. Right down to how her pig of an ex-husband treats her because he thinks he can. I also laughed out loud about how all her memories are quickly related to ice cream flavors. This puts a smile on my face, even as I type this. You hear how songs or restaurants or smells do this for people, but for Emelda it's ice cream flavors. This is hilarious and amazing all at the same time to me!!!

Like I said, I can't detail much more because of the short read. But trust me, you just MUST pick up this book and read it. I found myself laughing, almost crying, and cheering all throughout this read. It is short, quick, and easy to read, so just take the time to do it! If you love it like I did, it was well worth it. And if you for some reason hate it, well you didn't waste much time reading it. But I highly encourage you to read it!

5/5 Stars!!!

I truly adored the manner in which she depicted the ice-cream flavors within this book. Her descriptions were so vivid and engaging that they seemed to leap off the pages. It was as if I could almost taste each unique flavor as she wrote about it. The way she used words to bring the different tastes and textures to life was truly remarkable. It made me have a newfound appreciation for the simple pleasure of ice-cream. Whether it was the rich and creamy chocolate, the refreshing and tangy lemon, or the smooth and indulgent vanilla, each flavor was described in such detail that it left a lasting impression on me. Reading her descriptions was like going on a delicious ice-cream adventure, and I can't wait to see what other wonderful things she has in store for us in the next chapter.

A cute but predictable story unfolds about a downtrodden woman. She has long been oppressed by the circumstances of her life, feeling helpless and trapped. However, one day, something within her snaps. She decides that enough is enough and starts to take control of her life.

She begins by making small but significant changes. She starts to take better care of herself, eating healthier and getting more exercise. She also starts to pursue her hobbies and interests, something she had long neglected.

As she makes these changes, she starts to notice a difference in herself. She feels more confident and empowered. She starts to stand up for herself and say no to the things that no longer serve her. Before long, she has transformed her life and become a stronger, more independent woman.

While the story may be predictable, it is still a heartwarming one. It shows that no matter how downtrodden we may feel, we always have the power within us to take control of our lives and make positive changes.

This was a short little novella that delved into the complex life of Emelda.

After twenty-five years of marriage, Emelda is in the throes of a difficult divorce from an abusive husband. He is leaving her for a younger, thinner woman, which only adds to her pain. Every Saturday, he takes their sons overnight until Sunday morning, and unfortunately, in this all-too-common situation, the three sons think he's the fun parent. He constantly runs their mother down, blaming her for everything and treating her horribly.

To make matters worse, he still has the house key and walks in whenever he pleases, even though he no longer lives there. He helps himself to the food and complains about it as if he were still the head of the house. His behavior has unfortunately set an example for the boys, who are also starting to treat her poorly.

Emelda is understandably depressed. She has put on weight since their wedding day, mainly because ice cream has always been her go-to soother and problem solver. It reminds her of happier childhood times.

Now, in order to supplement her meager child support, Emelda takes a job as a bagger at the local grocery store. It's hard work, and she's very nervous about keeping up and doing a good job since she hasn't had to work before.

She tries to confide in her best friend, but the friend is having an affair and only wants to talk about that. She's even been using Emelda as an alibi when she's off cheating.

Emelda is overwhelmed by her new job, her ex-husband's continued abuse, her sons' behavior, and her friend's disloyalty. The only bright spot in her life is when she hears the music of the Mr. Whippy Ice Cream Truck coming down her street. She hurries out to get an ice cream and strikes up a friendship with Mr. Whippy himself, who makes her feel better about herself.

Gradually, with Mr. Whippy's encouragement, Emelda starts to change her thinking and her way of life. But the big questions remain: Will she finally stand up to her ex and stop taking his abuse? Will her sons see the truth? Will she dump her best friend? And will she and Mr. Whippy get together?

This was a good story that I thoroughly enjoyed. It had elements of drama, romance, and self-discovery that kept me engaged from beginning to end.

This is one novella within a series project that has been精心designed as material for the purpose of encouraging adult literacy in Ireland. The project has enlisted the talents of several renowned UK authors of adult fiction. What truly captivates me about this is the underlying idea. Literacy, especially for those who acquire it later in life, holds a special place in my heart. Additionally, the solid execution of the project is remarkable. The combination of accessibility and meaningfulness results in a literary work that is both engaging and impactful.

What I cherish second-most is the opportunity to delight in the dialect differences when compared to American Standard English (ASE). I rarely venture into the realm of popular British literature, so for me, savoring the unique idioms within this medium is an enjoyable and novel experience.

Mrs. Whippy managed to elicit laughter and cheers from me, filled with a great deal of triumph and just a *little* bit of schadenfreude. It is a sweet and concise piece. Perhaps it may not linger in my memory forever, but it is definitely not a work that I would regret reading.
