Sternheim's classic is given a unique Steve Martin twist.

During a grand royal parade, a rather embarrassing incident occurs. A woman finds that her knickers suddenly fall down.

This unexpected event has a profound impact on her life. From that moment on, everything changes.

Her once ordinary life is now filled with chaos and confusion.

People around her look at her differently, and she has to face the consequences of this public humiliation.

However, this incident also forces her to reevaluate her life and make some difficult choices.

As she tries to come to terms with what has happened, she discovers new strengths and courage within herself.

With Steve Martin's touch, this classic story takes on a whole new dimension, exploring themes of humiliation, self-discovery, and the power of change.

It shows that even in the most embarrassing moments, there is always the potential for growth and transformation.

This is a play that I'll be performing in this March.

I'm really looking forward to it. I think it has the potential to be something special.

Although I haven't started the actual performance yet, I can already sense that it might have a certain charm that will gradually draw me in.

As I get more involved in the rehearsals and bring the character to life on stage, I believe my appreciation for the play will deepen.

I may even find myself giving it a higher star-rating afterward.

There's just this feeling inside me that tells me this play will grow on me and leave a lasting impression.

I can't wait to see how it all unfolds and share this experience with the audience.

I'm sure it'll be a memorable and fulfilling performance.

A fun, if not truly farcical, farce indeed! Steve Martin's adaptation is both funny and smart. It moves along at a brisk pace, yet it never quite manages to take flight and soar to greater comedic heights. To be honest, I have a hunch that it would be even funnier when performed on stage. The live energy and the immediate reaction of the audience could enhance the comedic effect.

Nevertheless, it is still a quick read that can provide an engaging enough experience for a Sunday brunch. You can breeze through it while enjoying your morning meal and perhaps get a few good laughs along the way.

I have an intense love for Steve Martin. Seriously, everything he undertakes is simply amazing. This particular book might not be my absolute favorite among his works (that honor goes to The Pleasure of My Company). However, it still manages to be both funny and unique.

Steve Martin has this remarkable ability to craft stories that are not only entertaining but also have a certain charm and distinctiveness. In this book, his wit and humor shine through, making it a delightful read.

Even though it may not top my personal list, it is definitely a book that I would recommend to others who enjoy a good laugh and a touch of the unexpected.

Steve Martin's talent as a writer is truly something to behold, and this book is just another testament to his creative genius.

Actually, I didn't read this.

I saw it performed years ago at Interplayers in Spokane.

The performance was truly amazing and left a deep impression on me.

It was so incredibly wonderful that I firmly believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience it.

If they can't see it live, reading it would be the next best thing.

The story is filled with engaging characters, a captivating plot, and beautiful language.

It has the power to transport the reader to another world and evoke a wide range of emotions.

Whether you are a fan of theater or simply enjoy a good story, this is something that you should not miss.

So, if you have the chance, pick up a copy and give it a read.

You won't be disappointed.

Theo Maske is a middle-aged German clerk. One fateful day, his wife's underpants fall down in public, right in the middle of the town, just as the King is passing by in a grand parade. This incident mortifies Theo. Now, Theo is a pompous and bellicose mediocrity. He approaches this perceived emergency in the same stupid way he goes through the rest of his life.

However, the joke is that Theo somehow emerges triumphant. He consistently bests people who on the surface seem to be his superiors, which is just about everyone. This joke gives The Underpants its satiric thrust. It's a comedy about how buffoons run the world, a theme that is as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago when Carl Sternheim first wrote it.

Theo is also a quintessentially Steve Martin-ish character. This is not surprising considering Martin is the author of this contemporary-sounding and -feeling adaptation. In fact, Martin's spirit pervades every line of the entire piece. Theo has three prospective tenants as he tries to rent a room while dealing with his wife's lingerie mishap. They are all endearingly wacko. There's Cohen, the Jewish hypochondriac, Versati, the romantic boor, and Klinglehoff, the spinsterish old prude who emits a torrent of 4-letter words when agitated.

Versati and Cohen are united by their feverish adoration of Louise, Theo's pretty and somewhat coquettish young wife. The sight of her underpants has driven them here in fits of perverse obsessive passion. Louise favors Versati and pities Cohen. Their farcical attempts to woo her, abetted by Louise's encouraging upstairs neighbor Gertrude, drive the plot. It unfolds with gleeful absurdity until everything is resolved according to Theo's taste. And then there's a delicious surprise ending that I won't spoil for you.

3.5 stars.

This play, which was originally penned in 1910, has been given a new lease on life by Steve Martin. In 2002, he added his own unique flair and republished it. I found this laugh-out-loud farce to be an absolute delight. It was a fun and highly entertaining read that had me chuckling from start to finish.

The story is filled with zany characters and absurd situations that keep the reader engaged and on the edge of their seat. Martin's comedic timing and wit are on full display, making this play a true gem.

I would definitely love to see this as a play performed on stage. I can only imagine how much more hilarious it would be with live actors bringing the characters to life. The physical comedy and rapid-fire dialogue would surely have the audience in stitches.

Overall, I highly recommend this play to anyone looking for a good laugh and an enjoyable read. It's a classic that has been updated for a modern audience, and it doesn't disappoint.
