I liked it more when they introduced Xing alchemy, which they call “Rendanshu”(Alkahestry in the TV series). Introducing Ling Yao and Mei Cheng took this volume into another level.

It's not often that a series can allow new readers to jump in mid-stream and expect them to follow what's going on, but Volume 8 of FullMetal Alchemist accomplishes just that. That doesn't mean these newcomers will be in on the complete story, but they won't be completely lost either, and most likely they'll get hooked enough to go back and pick up the earlier volumes anyhow.

Then again, it's tough to find any self-respecting otaku who isn't at least familiar with the adventures of Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse. A popular anime series, video game series, trading card game, and of course the manga that started it all, FullMetal Alchemist is one of those multi-tasking titles that manages to be entertaining and popular no matter what the medium. Still, if you've been living under a rock or simply been too engrossed in your Evangelion remasters, here's a quick recap.

Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse attempted to bring their mother back to life through an ancient alchemic ritual that went horribly wrong, claiming Edward's leg and consuming Alphonse's entire body. Sacrificing his arm, Edward was able to encase Al's spirit in a suit of armor, and now the brothers work to find a way to reclaim what was taken from them. In the meantime Edward also works as a State Alchemist, serving the government as he tries to help his brother regain his lost memories.

Now all of that you can get from the back of the tankoubon, but if you're curious to find out more, and volume 1 isn't readily available, volume 8 is a very user-friendly way to jump onboard, even though you'll start that jump by reading about the climax of a previous battle. Once that's complete, there's plenty of time for licking wounds by both the Elric family as well as their growing list of adversaries, and that introduces a large chunk of the supporting cast along the way, just in time for you to meet a new character, as well as catch the Elric brothers in action in an urban battle with some rather unconventional henchmen.

Newcomers to the series will also discover something fans have known from the beginning… FullMetal Alchemist lives up to the hype. If you come out of this book without being even remotely curious about what happens next, I'd be surprised. Fortunately, there are plenty of options open for you, evidenced by the advertisements in the back for novels about the Elric brothers as well as a FullMetal Alchemist Profiles book that will bring you up to speed no matter when or in what format you picked up this series.

There are a lot of titles that venture across different media and tend to over saturate themselves in the minds of the consumer. I don't have to list them for you... several probably sprang to mind when you read that last sentence. Yet there's something about FullMetal Alchemist that manages to shrug off that stigma like water off a duck's back. It's everything those other series are, and certainly ventures into the same territory they do, but it manages to maintain a degree of credibility that keeps you interested and reading long after you might have given up on other series. Obviously, your best bet would be to pick up volume 1 and start from there, but if you're curious, volume 8 isn't a bad place to jump onboard, either.
