Slim book.

It is truly a long article. However, it is worth the steep price I paid to ship the physical copy across several oceans.

To me, it is reminiscent of those Reader's Digest pieces. But this is Michael Lewis we are talking about - so the point isn't driven home with a sledgehammer and there is no 'do this and you will win in life' kind of prescription.

It is a gentle story that will leave you thinking for a long time afterwards. You can finish it in an hour.

It came home from Books Wagon via Amazon. I ripped off the package and finished half of it with breakfast and the other half after a workout.

This book is a must-read for parents as it offers valuable insights and perspectives that can enhance their understanding of various aspects related to parenting and life in general.

The gentle nature of the story makes it accessible and engaging, while still leaving a lasting impact on the reader.

Whether you are a new parent or have years of experience, this book is sure to provide something of value.

So, if you are looking for a thought-provoking read that won't take up too much of your time, give this slim book a try.

Short and sweet, this is a one-day read that will surely captivate you.

It presents a very compelling story of a generational clash, pitting the old players against the current generation players, with a legendary coach at the center of it all.

The narrative teaches valuable lessons about complacency, highlighting the importance of not resting on one's laurels. It also emphasizes the virtue of struggle, even when faced with overwhelming odds, and the significance of dedication to both the team and oneself.

Moreover, there are many other lessons to be gleaned from this engaging tale. I absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an inspiring and thought-provoking read.

How much impact does a coach have on their athletes? It's a question that Michael Lewis has been constantly pondering. He is always striving to live up to the valuable lessons that Coach Fitz imparted to him during his high school days.

Lewis vividly introduces us to Billy Fitzgerald. He was not only a college basketball and baseball star but also a minor league baseball player. Moreover, he had an outstanding coaching career as a high school basketball and baseball coach, achieving an impressive 7 state championships in these two sports.

This tribute to Coach Fitz is also a profound statement about how the role of athletics and coaches has evolved over time. While former players like Lewis are eager to recognize and pay tribute to their former coach, surprisingly, the parents of current players are complaining about Coach Fitz and his coaching methods.

Lewis beautifully showcases how the things he learned from his coach went beyond the realm of sports and taught him invaluable lessons in the game of life. These sentiments can also be found in other athletes who played under Coach Fitz, such as the renowned Manning brothers in football.

My favorite aspect of this is the fascinating comparison of student athletes during the time when Lewis played versus the expectations of the parents and athletes at the time this was written. It truly highlights the changing landscape of sports and the complex relationship between coaches, athletes, and parents.

It's truly a remarkable book about Lewis's baseball coach. It makes me reflect that for the majority of people, we progress from childhood to adolescence without being conscious of our purpose and lacking the passion or determination to pursue it. At least in my case, for various reasons, I had this "awakening" around the age of 17 or 18 regarding what I desired to accomplish in life. This gave me a specific determination to apply myself and strive for it, which I had severely lacked up until that moment.

Coach Fitz was the sort of teacher who firmly believed in how athletics can serve as a means to impart that crucial lesson to kids. It's such a pity that most of us go through life without encountering that one teacher who has that kind of interest in developing kids and preparing them for what lies ahead in the world. It also causes me to think about how most of us never truly experience this awakening and are deprived of that sense of purpose.

Super short read, did it in one sitting.

The power of coaching lies in the coach's remarkable ability. It is not just about having a general understanding but knowing precisely what the true potential of the coachee is. This requires deep perception and洞察力.

Moreover, the coach must be able to guide the coachee to see this potential for themselves. It's like shining a light on something that has been hidden within them.

Once the coachee begins to see it, the coach then has to help them believe in it. This belief is crucial as it gives the coachee the confidence and motivation to take action.

Finally, the coach's role is to encourage and support the coachee to go out and get it. To pursue their potential and turn it into reality. This is where the true power of coaching is manifested, in helping individuals reach their full potential and achieve their goals.

This is a short and simple read.

However, I didn't like the part about the temper.

Nonetheless, it does have one of my favorite sports quotes, which is "He will never be a tough competitor he doesn't know how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable."

This quote really stands out to me as it emphasizes the importance of being able to endure discomfort and push through difficult situations in order to be a successful competitor.

It makes me think about how in sports, as well as in life, we often have to face challenges and step out of our comfort zones in order to grow and achieve our goals.

Overall, while the article had its flaws, this quote alone makes it worth reading.

This book truly had a profound impact on me. It made me experience a rollercoaster of emotions, from uncontrollable laughter to heartfelt tears.

Moreover, it served as an excellent reminder of the proper way to coach young individuals. It vividly brought to my mind the memories of my tough middle school coaches, Mr Maynard and Coach Ed. In fact, they could easily have been substituted for Coach Fitz in numerous of the stories within this book.

The only drawback I found was that the book was rather short. I couldn't help but wish it were longer, as I was completely engrossed in its contents and wanted more.

Overall, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in coaching or simply looking for an inspiring and entertaining read.

I listened to the <60 minute audiobook and I would definitely consider buying a physical copy to highlight the favorite quotes.

"Self discipline" is a quality that I felt incredibly connected to as a child. However, as I grew up, I somehow forgot how important it is in making me a whole person as an adult. This book really had a profound impact on me.

Probably because of my own similar history in softball, where the importance of grit was instilled in me by my coaches and father. The book also brought up an interesting point about the modern balance.

On one hand, we have the need to protect the child from old-fashioned or toxic adult expectations. But on the other hand, we also risk robbing the child of opportunities to face hardship and learn for themselves what self-improvement truly means.

This is a delicate balance that parents and society as a whole need to carefully consider.

Michael Lewis is a highly regarded author, and any book penned by him is truly worth delving into.

This particular work is a relatively short one, which I had the pleasure of listening to in just a few hours.

The concise nature of the book does not in any way diminish its value or the impact it has.

In fact, it manages to pack a punch within its limited pages, presenting engaging and thought-provoking content.

Despite the short duration of listening, I found myself fully immersed in the story and ideas that Michael Lewis presents.

His writing style is captivating, making it easy to follow along and stay interested from start to finish.

Overall, this short book by Michael Lewis is a gem that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for an enjoyable and intellectually stimulating read.

It serves as a testament to his talent as an author and his ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and accessible manner.

A coach has a noble intention. He desires to prepare his players not only for the games on the field but also for the harsh realities of life.

He understands that being a successful athlete is not just about physical skills and winning competitions. It also involves dealing with various challenges and setbacks that come their way.

The coach believes that by exposing his players to the real world, they will develop the necessary mental toughness and resilience. He arranges for them to participate in community service activities, where they can interact with people from different backgrounds and understand their struggles.

Moreover, the coach emphasizes the importance of education and encourages his players to pursue their studies. He knows that having a good education will open up more opportunities for them in the future, regardless of their athletic careers.

By taking these steps, the coach hopes to shape his players into well-rounded individuals who are ready to face whatever life throws at them.
