This was required reading for my PMP study group. Very dense, but also written in a way that was readable and engaging. Really liked the explanations after the practices tests. I am concerned though that with the changes to the PMP test in the last year or so, that much of this content is not relevant to what will be tested (that it has moved to testing more towards Agile). I can comment on this more after I have taken the test.

This book really helped me understand project management and prepare for the PMP exam. Of course the PMBOK is the foundational text and should be read, but this book is a lot more thorough and engaging. Mulcahy’s style is more conversational and she includes exercises through the book to drive concepts home. There is a quiz at the end of each chapter that is fairly difficult and a good gauge to see if you understood what you read. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I pass tomorrow but either way this book was extremely helpful.

Update: passed with flying colors!!

Muy necesario, da mucha apertura pero es bastante denso, hay que leer con calma y prestar atención a los consejos que resalta para el examen, súper necesario!

I read and committed myself to the practice problems in this book in preparation for the PMP exam. While this book was helpful in understanding the traditional/predictive PMP concepts, it didn’t fully cover agile methodology that is crucial for the 2021 exam. I recommend pairing this with the PMI Agile Handbook.

I haven't written the exam yet, so not sure I can rate it fairly....it's a beast of a book and not exactly a light beach read and I'm not referring to the size of the book!

Generally, it's a good reference book.

This is by far is one of the best PMP books!
Note that on January 2nd, 2021, the new edition will be released, the 10th edition.

This book was a great help passing the PMP exam. I've received many emails, and Linkedin questions asking for advices and to detail my PMP experience.

I am not going to go through the PMP application, how to fill it, or what are the requirements as these details can be found on the PMI org.

My preparations started by taking the PMP course provided by PMI Montreal Chapter, to accumulate the educational 35 hours required in the application. At the course, we were provided a huge book that contains all the training materials, printed PowerPoint slides, also the book included 2 small 20 questions exams at the end of each chapter and 2 100 simulation exams at the end of the book.

Also, we got access to download a digital format of PMBOK, which is the PMP body of knowledge. This book was the most painful book I had to read in my entire life, very technical, boring, and extremely dry, but it is a must to read! I've read this book prior to starting my training course, which made understanding the course materials, acronyms, technical terms, and formulas easier.

In the course, they recommended Rita's book as extra resources, which I bought and read, the best thing about Rita's book, it is like a novel book, where you feel Rita is sitting with you and telling you a story, a technical story for sure that is filled with exercises and exams, which I've done all. The beauty of Rita's book, that it oils the big PMP machines, makes everything fall in place, and goes in details explaining a lot of situational situations that I don't think I would've passed the exam without!

To prepare for the exam, you will need to study between 200 to 300 hours, depends on how fast, dedicated and FOCUSED you are! There are no short cuts, it is a painful road full of pain and blood, so unless you are 100% committed, then I would suggest you wait until you have the time.

It took me approximately 255.5 hours of studying.
40 hours Training course
60 hours to read the PMBOK ‘’the PMI body of knowledge book’’
111.5 hours to read and do all the exercises in the training book provided in the training course, plus Rita Mulcahy 9th Edition PMP Prep, this book is a must, I wouldn’t have passed without it.
44 hours of practicing exams only

It took me almost 5 months to do it, as I am working full time, I tried to dedicate 2 hours of study a day during the week, and 4 hours on the weekend each day. Of course, I couldn’t always do it, sometimes I finish work late, sick, or drained, so I try to make these hours some other days.

After you study and you are ready for the exam, book your exam one month away, and keep practicing exams and simulations till the exam day, I took one week off as vacation before the exam and was studying like crazy.

This was my experience, I highly recommend Rita's book, I don't think I would've done it without this book.
To whoever preparing for the PMP exam, best of luck! you can do it!
But remember, no short cuts!

There are many books for learning project management or PMP. But this book definitely aims at passing exam. I had fair amount of knowledge to carry out projects well at my organisation. But passing PMP means giving PMI expected answers which one finds out upon giving first test after first round of learning. I had gone through the entire PMBOK and was scoring in the range of 50 to 60%. That's where I started looking for other preparation sources and I found this book. I'm writing this review hoping it may help someone looking for feedback. The book helps develop thinking the way PMI does and answer accordingly. It also highlights time to time what good project management means beyond the immediate scope of exam but yes it doesn't fail to highlight any pitfalls. As you read you kind of feel the book is written for you! If you think you are good project manager but are not sure if you will pass the exam in first go then this book is definitely something you can rely on.
