My favorites in the order I read them and things I loved about them:

1. The Third Resignation - the idea that death is a choice.
2. The Other Side of Death - twists and explores the idea of death; turns it inside out.
3. Eyes of a Blue Dog - this one continues to stick in my mind; he always forgets her even as she searches the world over for him with only these strange words.
4. The Woman Who Came at Six O'Clock - this woman is tragic and made of steel. This man loves her, based off of very little. They are both so compelling. His devotion and the way she forsakes him despite his unconditional love... until she asks a single favor before they part. I was spellbound.
5. Someone Has Been Disarranging These Roses - this is a sort of ghost story and wow!
6. One of These Days - the resentment of the wronged during times of corrupt power. Striking.
7. There Are No Thieves In This Town - the burden of sin and its consequences.
8. A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings (A Tale for Children) - sometimes beautiful and lovely things are abused for their rarity.
9. The Sea of Lost Time - the sea that smells of roses and what's underneath it!
10. The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World (A Tale for Children) - I had read this one before. I will always adore it because of the power this dream had on a previously lifeless town that bloomed with love and beauty once the people found something to stand for together.
11. Blacáman The Good, Vendor of Miracles - well someone got his revenge. Wow. Chilling ending. The "the Good" part is kinda questionable I think.
12. Innocent Eréndira - this was fascinating and I don't know what to think but I love it a lot. What is so interesting is how devoted she is to her grandmother even after she meets him and then later she completely swaps. And the angel (that moment when he appeared half-visible though??? and the allusion to his father knowing Jesus?) is moved to violence and it is for nothing, although I do not blame her, really.

With 26 stories, there is a lot to choose from - some to like, some to not like as much. The most interesting part of the book is the time frame covered by the stories. In reading this, you have the opportunity to see the growth of the author, from his writing as a very young man to those written when his career was well established. Most impressive to me was the style being established when he was very young, I believe the first story was written at age 19. Even then, if you read the story, you know who wrote it. Garcia Marquez is one of my favorites, so I would recommend the book in any event, but the stories are highly worth reading.

Essential to those who have read his novels, these odd and beautiful stories show chronologically the slow development of his confidence and skill. Even his earliest writings, quirky meditations on death and what it means to be dead, are not as well fleshed out but still have passages that floor me and the imagination that awes me. Many of the stories add to the world of Macondo from One Hundred Years of Solitude, one of the greatest novels I have ever read.

A lot of these stories are not special or interesting.
A Very Old Man, The Handsomest Drowned Man, Balthazar's Marvelous Afternoon, The Sea of Lost Time were my highlights. Blacaman the Good and Incredible Sad Tale of Innocent Erenida were also pretty good.

I really enjoyed this anthology, it feels like you have a little Gabriel García Márquez in a petri dish and you get to watch him grow from his unclear yet still striking early work to the beautiful stories from the last collection. The sea of lost time was probably my favourite :)
