Mesmerizing!
Starting with Mr. Bradbury - I was completely transported with his words on a sunny summer afternoon to the cool autumn evening that is All Hallows Eve. The tale winds from the quiet introspect of a boy to the mayhem that is The Homecoming. Frantic wording that had me completely involved.
I would have barreled through from start to finish but slowed my pace to devour the exquisite art of McKean. They are a perfect match to embody the rollercoaster of a yarn.
Thoroughly entertaining!

A short story by Ray Bradbury adapted into a small book and illustrated by Dave McKean. A regular human boy in a family of supernatural, vampire-like relatives wishes that he, too, could be a supernatural creature as the extended family gathers for All Hallows Eve.

I love Bradbury so was very surprised when a friend brought this to work today because she thought I'd like it. I loved it! Not only is Bradbury a favorite, but McKean is as well. His usual art form, photos and layered drawings, generally have a surreal feeling to them so his style was perfect for this tale of the one mortal member of an immortal family. A family of Vampires, Mummies, Ghosts, Ghouls and other things I just couldn't figure out.

Poor Timothy longs to be like the other members of his eclectic family, but they are intent on keeping him alive. I got the feeling, that although they love the freedom that comes from their "otherness" they also envy Timothy his actual life. The fact that Bradbury never offers an explanation for this singularity and the story still works is a testament to his ability to spin a web in which we allow ourselves to become entangled.

Why the family is the way it is makes no difference. This story is about Timothy's longing. McKean's drawings were perfect for this. This is the first time I recollect McKean sticking to strict illustrations. There was no mixing of mediums, but that didn't hinder my enjoyment at all.

I wonder who decided on the font and typeset. Was it McKean? Whoever was in charge of that did a beautiful job there as well. There are assorted fonts and sizes and even the layout of the text was clever and varied. My favorite was when a word or phrase would be larger than the rest, but no space allowance was made. The words took over the line above and below.

This is a lovely story and a visually beautiful one as well.

I read the short story Homecoming about 1982. I loved this tender story of Timothy. He is the human throw back in a family of monsters. He knows that his whole family will live decades or even centuries longer than he, and a huge homecoming party is about to happen. All Timothy wants is to belong.

So this one is a weird one. I love Bradbury but this one is really out there. I still recommend it though. The artwork is exceptional and the story is out of this world. The illustrator is Dave McKean. A short spooky family tale that is a good seasonal read.

I love Bradbury's short stories, and I love McKean's illustrations, especially in a children's book. The two work particularly well in this short story (also found in The October Country), about a boy who is the only mortal in a family of vampires, ghouls, and assorted supernatural creatures. Judged entirely on its own merits, Homecoming is, of course, a fantastic short story. I think that one of Bradbury's strengths in the short story format was his ability to so quickly and thoroughly develop real characters, and this is absolutely no exception. I also really liked the way McKean's illustrations worked with the text, though I freely admit that he can be an acquired taste. A wonderful experience, if you like both Bradbury and McKean, and I do.

Ray Bradbury’s writing has done it again! This special edition book is not only complete with Bradbury’s work, but also with McKean’s beautiful illustrations! I’ve read The Homecomjng a few months back, and this book edition has revived the amazing sensation of reading it again. Love this copy of the story forever and always.

Not good, not great. It feels like experimental writing which explores ideas that may not have any purpose in being published. Ray’s good at writing. Most people would enjoy his experimenting just as much as they would a sound musician. And it’s not that he’s exploring, simply writing to write. Not a waste of time, but I’m not the better for it. I’ve found other shorts by Bradbury much more enjoyable (this could use existing characters from elsewhere which would make more sense in the scope of what's written).

I stumbled upon The Homecoming whilst browsing through the graphic novel section of the library. A very strange short story about a boy named Timothy, the only mortal in a family of ghouls and vampires who get together every year on Halloween for a family reunion... I really liked it! It was hauntingly illustrated, wonderfully complementing the tale. My favorite part was at the end when Timothy is concerned about his mortality and his mother comforts him by saying, "We all love you. No matter how different you are, no matter if you leave us one day. And if and when you die your bones will lie undisturbed, we'll see to that, you'll lie at ease forever, and I'll come see you every All Hallows' Eve and tuck you in more secure."
