I got this book to add to my tiny graphic novel collection. It has my absolute favorite Ray Bradbury story in it. However, I found I was put off by the art somewhat. It's not that I haven't seen the substitution of poor proportion for actual mood before, I have. It's become too common. I would have liked to see a different artist who could portray mood and the beauty of horror, if I may use such a phrase. I'm not certain who that would be. Parts of the art were still acceptable for me. I would give this a three star, except that it is Bradbury, and my favorite story, and so I am keeping it in the house.

My sister told me this story when I was six or seven. I loved it and thought she'd made it up herself. Then she tried to tell me about the Donner party before my mom broke it up, saying she'd feed my sister to the Donner party if she didn't stop scaring the shit out of me. My sister didn't make up this story, but it's still wonderful, beautifully enhanced by Dave McKean's flowing, darkly earthy work.

I read this for my English class and it was quite fun to read. At first I was confused by the types of characters that were being described, but then I quickly understood what type of family this was and it made more sense. It's sad that Timothy felt the way he did in his own family, but I'm glad his mother and uncle were supportive.

McKean was as much born to illustrate Bradbury as he was Gaiman. Beautiful book. I loved the story, but felt nagged throughout by the style of the writing - it didn't seem quite right to me. Sure enough, upon comparison it looks like this version has been adapted and changed from what I assume is the original version in The October Country. Why isn't that mentioned anywhere? What was the reason? I like this new version. It's a little darker, if that's possible - more painterly and abstract. Just curious as to how and why this was allowed.

Bradbury is a master of language and McKean's illustrations are gorgeous and fit the story perfectly. A wonderful addition to any library.

This edition of Bradbury’s classic short story is just as much a visual feast as a lingual one, with illustrations by the always-amazing Dave McKean, who lends his whimsical , dark, strange, otherworldly dreams to Ray’s nightshade tale. A must read for both fans of both artists and for anyone who loves the perfect blend of words and visuals. 10/10 read!

So difficult to rate this book. Got it mostly for illustrations... I love McKean. And Bradbury... He always confuses me, and out off that mess in my head that he creates, amazing images and atmosphere emerge... but I need time to get there, I need twenty pages or more of Bradbury's poetry to charm me into his blend of whimsicalness. A story is simply not long enough, not even with the help from McKean.
I'll have to reread this one.

I normally love Bradbury but I had a really difficult time getting into this story. The illustrations by Dave McKean were superb and matched the tone of the story really well, but something about the book didn't grab me the way the stories in The Illustrated Man or Bradbury's longer fiction does (I think it might be the pacing?). I did think that the ending was beautifully macabre and almost redeemed things for me, but it was such a slog for something so short that the payoff at the end wasn't enough for me. I might recommend this to horror fans looking for something short, but I'd probably direct them to Gaiman or Bradbury's other work instead.

Dave McKean's art is an acquired taste, but I'm a fan, and I was really glad he illustrated this - one of my favourite short stories ever. It's dark and wistful and lonely and sad and beautiful, and the artwork complements it perfectly. I especially love the wraparound dust cover art.
